Scientists Warn of Rising Oceans as Antarctic Ice Melts

Gillis, Justin, and Kenneth Chang. "Scientists Warn of Rising Oceans as Antarctic Ice Melts." The New York Times. The New York Times, 12 May 2014. Web. 12 May 2014. <http://www.nytimes.com/2014/05/13/science/earth/collapse-of-parts-of-west-antarctica-ice-sheet-has-begun-scientists-say.html?_r=0>.

I read the New York Times article Scientists Warn of Rising Oceans as Antarctic Ice Melts by Justin Gillis and Kenneth Chang. In 1978, glaciologist (glaciology is the study of glaciers) John H. Mercer of Ohio State University warned that if significant human release of greenhouse gases continued, the West Antarctic ice sheet was of particular vulnerability. He was assailed, but soon after, scientists began paying more attention to the Antarctic ice sheet and their concern has only been growing ever since. On Monday, two groups of scientists reported that the melting of the Antarctic Ice sheet has already begun. The scientists also reported that the complete melting of this ice sheet may be unstoppable at this point, since "global warming is accelerating the pace of the disintegration". The melting of this ice shelf is of particular significance because of its massiveness and the amount of water it holds. Not only will the melting of this ice shelf continue to desalinate the oceans, making it harder and harder for sea life to thrive, but it also poses a threat direct to humankind as well: the rising of ocean water levels. With this ice shelf completely melted, scientists claim that "a rise in global sea level of at least 10 feet may now not be inevitable".

Climate change affects everyone who lives on this planet. Every year, climate change causes our environment to get sicker and sicker. People need to be not only aware of climate change but also aware of the fact that if we don't act right now, it will become inevitable that life on earth will never get back to what it used to be like. As more and more horrific articles about the stresses global warming has put on our world come out, the question really becomes "why haven't we begun taking truly significant action against global warming?"

The topic of climate change is one that I find personal interest in, so this article appealed to me immediately. This article was well-written and clear. The two authors of the article are well-known New York Times writers, so the well-written article was to be expected. Overall, I saw no problems with this article.

I read Ethan’s review of the article “ Scientists Warn of Rising Oceans as Antarctic Ice Melts,” by Justin Gillis and Kenneth Chang. I think Ethan did a really great job summarizing his article. He put an emphasis on the main points of the article but kept in the important details. As well as that, I really thought he used a great vocabulary with scientific terms as well as a wide range of adjectives that kept the readers interested. One last thing I thought he did very well was incorporate quotes written by the author that give us better detail.

Even though Ethan gave us a great review I felt the author analysis was laking. He kind of gave us a view of what the authors are known to be not what he thought about them. One other thing Ethan may be able to be improve is maybe synthesize the very well written summary just to help us more even though it is amazingly written.

Something that really stuck with me after reading this review is the fact that we as humans have so much power. We have the power to harm or to be part of the solution. Ethan’s article really brought a highlight to the significance of us as youth especially to know we have to care for the Earth.

  2. I liked Ethan's review because so much about the review was enjoyable. He included a great amount of facts to support the review. He even included when this trend was noticed by glaciologists.

I couldn't find anything that was wrong with this article. I tried but I found nothing because it was so well written.

I saw the title and decided to read it. When I read it, I was surprised that the melting had already started this past Monday. It is crazy that people have let global warming get a bit out of hand and have it taking a toll just now.

  3. Ethan did an outstanding job on his review; it is one of the best reviews I have read all year. Ethan read an article called, “Scientists Warn of Rising Oceans as Antarctic Ice Melts,” The first thing I noticed that Ethan did very well is reinforce the points he is trying to make by informing us that influential and well known people have taken part in this idea. Not only did he just do that, but he also quoted these people. Ethan used great vocab when talking about the article and he gave us a kind of chronological order of when discoveries were made about this idea. Overall I think Ethan did a very good job summarizing this article and getting the main points across.

Even though Ethan did a great job on his review obviously there are a couple things he could have improved on. One question I hink needs answering his what can we do to help. This is an informational article, but it needs to be getting an overall point across. Another thing that I believe should have been stated is how long will it be until this could actually happen.

I was not aware of the entire idea of this article and that is why I enjoyed it. This article was informational and it made me a more informed human being and I thank you for that Ethan.

  4. I think that Ethan did an exceptionally good job with this review. There were so many positive aspects of it which really made it one of the greats. One thing that was really neat was how Ethan was able to weave in a quote from the article itself into his review, as this greatly helped in validating what he was saying. Also, Ethan included background information in his review which made the whole piece easier to understand. Additionally, I like how Ethan chose an article which doesn't relate only to one person or persons, but everyone on earth.

There were a couple of things that Ethan could’ve done better in this review, but they are really minor. One thing is that Ethan could have added a sentence or two explaining what the Antarctic Ice Sheet is for those who don’t know. Also, it would be really phat if Ethan had mentioned a couple of things which we Bronxvillians could do to help stop global warming. However, as I had said before, these are quite inconsequential things.

Overall this was an eye opening review which taught me so many new things about the impact global warming has on our environment. I had no idea that melting ice could make it harder for sea life to thrive. I hope that in the future we are able to stop this catastrophe and possibly reverse it so that our planet and its inhabitants have more time to exist.

  5. I thought that Ethan's article review was very well written. I thought that he did a good job of piecing quotations into it. Also, he went into great detail and explained everything quite well. Thirdly, I thought that Ethan did a good job of providing background information.

There were a few minor things that Ethan could have fixed. He could have said when the projected things would happen and what can be done to prevent these things from occurring.

I learned a lot about climate change from reading this. I did not know that a rise in sea level could potentially harm different sea mammals. This review was quite well written and informative.

  6. I enjoyed reading Ethan’s review. First off, I enjoyed how he defined glaciology. Although this word seems intuitive, it still helps to clarify. I also enjoyed how assertive Ethan was when he said that global warming is a problem that needs to be stopped. Lastly, I enjoyed how he used quotes from the article.
I would like to know what made the damage to the ice sheet irreversible. I would also like to know how desalination harms sea life.
I was not aware that some of the damage that global warming has caused is irreversible. I found this both very interesting and very scary.

  7. I liked Ethan's review for many reasons. For example, it had great quotes. Also, there were dates specified on when this problem was noticed. Third, there was mention of when the melting officially started.
There wasn't anything wrong with this article that I could find. But, he could tell us how it affects land species besides humans if possible.
I was already aware that global warming has started. I didn't know that it started melting ice just recently.

  8. I enjoyed reading Ethan's article for many reasons. He explained the term glaciology. He also mentioned when the rise in water level began to affect the environment and when this issue came to our attention.

There weren't that many things wrong with this review, as it was perfectly written. For instance, he could have said what could have been done or what could be done to prevent this type of events from happening in the not too distant future.

I didn't think that global warming could have this kind of effect on ice sheets. I knew about global warming a couple years ago and didn't think it would be that big a problem, and it would be something I could ignore, but thanks to Ethan's review, I was informed on how bad this problem REALLY is.

  9. For my current events assignment this week, I read Ethan’s review of the article “ Scientists Warn of Rising Oceans as Antarctic Ice Melts,” by Justin Gillis and Kenneth Chang. Right from the very beginning, there were things that I saw that I liked a lot about Ethan’s article. First was that he defined the word glaciologist. It is always helpful to have the definition of a word you would probably not see in everyday language, even if you think you can figure out the meaning. I also liked how he took direct quotes from the scientists involved in this article, making their ideas very clear to the reader. Finally, I liked how Ethan tied everything in at the end of the article showing what the increase in water level could actually mean for us and for other areas of life.
What would make this article better than it already was, the author could have added in some background information like about what species of fish the rising water levels would effect and what areas of the world. Also, the author could have been clearer on the timetable that this ice shelf could melt in.
Before reading this article, I was completely unaware of the fact that the average sea level could go up by 10 ft, this is a huge number and is truly terrifying to think of the possible effects.

  10. I read Ethan's current event on the article, "Scientists Warn of Rising Oceans as the Antarctic Ice Melts." I really enjoyed this article for many reasons. First of all, I really liked how Ethan included a background to the main point of the article in modern day. This gave the article more detail, which made it easier to understand. I also liked how he used great vocabulary because it made the article more sophisticated, which made it more interesting to read, Finally, i really like how the way he wrote it sounded like a story. There was a beginning, middle, and end.

There were a couple of things he could have improved on. First, I would have liked it if he said where, specifically, and what the antarctic ice sheet is. Secondly, he said that this could potentially threaten humankind, but he didn't really go into detail about why it could threaten us.

I really enjoyed reading this article because i learned a lot of stuff i din;t know before. I now realize how serious global warming clan actually be.
