Climate Model Suggests Everest Glaciers Could Nearly Disappear

This article, “Climate Model Suggests Everest Glaciers Could Nearly Disappear”, by Rachel Nuwer, talked about the staggering impact fossil fuel and greenhouse gas emissions are having on our planet’s parts. Using an electronic model for climate studies, Journalists at the online journal the Cryosphere, lead by Dr. Joseph Shea, virtually created a glacier around the base of Mount Everest, with same outside affects that there have now. They imputed patterns of greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere from the last fifty years, and calculated how long each glacier should last for. The numbers predict that the glaciers will be one percent of what they are now by 2100, meaning a ninety-nine percent loss of glacier.
The results of this study are incredibly important to humanity. Some of the largest glaciers are going to practically vanish if patterns stay the same, or even decrease. We have done so much damage to our world that we cannot go back and save it. Not only is this devastating to nature, but if we keep the earth warming up, what will happen to our own lives? It almost undoubtedly is not going to be good for us, but the only way to find out is to face these problems head-on, because we can’t stop them from happening.
Overall, this article was entertaining and fascinating to read. I liked the title, it was effective and captured my attention quickly. Although, I think the author should have included more information on what a huge spike in temperature would mean for common people. I wish she would have stated what these huge temperature changes are going to mean for the people of the world, and whether it is going to bring in new problems or make the ones we have now worse. Otherwise, I thought this article was concise and well-written.

  1. Cece’s review of the article, "Climate Model Suggests Everest Glaciers Could Nearly Disappear”, was well written. One reason I liked her review is because she wrote it in a clear order so it was very easy to follow. Also, Cece was straightforward when describing the article. This made the purpose and details of the article very clear. One other thing I liked that Cece did was how she explained clearly how these predictions about the disappearance of glaciers were made. One thing I think Cece could have added to her to review to make it even better is it a quote from the article. This would have helped the readers of review understand the article even better. I also think Cece could have expanded more on her own opinion of the disappearing of Mount Everest Glaciers. Reading the article and its review was very interesting. It is crazy to think how much greenhouse gases are affecting our planet and how quickly we are being affected.

  2. Cece did an excellent job in her review of the article “Climate Model Suggests Everest Glaciers Could Nearly Disappear” by Rachel Nuwer. She did a great job of summarizing the most important parts of the article in order to emphasize the importance of the issue. Cece did an amazing job of connecting the story to humanity when she describes the impact on the size of the glaciers in the world and how it will affect us in the next one hundred years. She words this second paragraph in such a way that hits the reader and makes them truly concerned for our planet’s future. I also agree with her when she critiques the author on her lack of information. This current event report could be improved if Cece had selected a larger article because the article does not reach the minimum paragraph requirement. With more information, she could have written a more detailed report. Cece could have also included a call to action regarding the steps that we could take to decrease greenhouse gas emissions and elongate the life of the glaciers. From reading this article and its review, I have learned that the glaciers may not be around for much longer, but a moderate decrease in emissions can potentially increase their timeline.

  3. I reviewed Cece’s article on “Climate Model Suggests Everest Glaciers Could Nearly Disappear.” I felt that her review was pristine, for three reasons. The first reason is that she chose an interesting topic, one that I don't know much about. The second reason was that there were few grammatical errors in the review so it was easy to comprehend. The third reason was that she was very concise in her review which made it easy to comprehend. Other than this, there were two aspects of the review that needed improvement. The first was that she could have included less summary and more analysis. The next reason was that she could have included a call to action about how we could have helped on this ever expanding issue. Reading her review, I learned more about climate change and the melting of glaciers.

After reading Cece's review of the article, "Climate Model Suggests Everest Glaciers Could Nearly Disappear,” I noticed that it was very well written with many details. Throughout the review, there were many details and examples from the article that helped me better understand the message and overall helped the review structure. In particular, she was able to connect the story to humanity when describing the impact that these glaciers have. It was truly written in a way that would impact the reader. In addition, Cece's review was straightforward to follow making the review an overall success. Ultimately, Cece had a positive evaluation and presented a well-developed critique that was able to spot problems in the piece while still emphasizing its significance.
Although Cece's review was very well written and successful, there were still some flaws that I noticed. Initially, I would have thought the review would be better if there was more background information on what the solution is to these glaciers so that the reader can have a general idea. I also felt that Cece could have included more critique that could help the reader understand more about her overall experience and opinion on the topic.
Overall, one thing that changed my perspective on the world was how much damage we have done to the glaciers and environment and how hard it is going to be to fix these problems.
