U.S. Military Space Plane Begins a Fourth (Mostly) Secret Mission

Chang, Kenneth. "U.S. Military Space Plane Begins a Fourth (Mostly) Secret Mission." The New York Times. The New York Times, 19 May 2015. Web. 01 June 2015.

This article, U.S. Military Space Plane Begins a Fourth (Mostly) Secret Mission, is very interesting. The article speaks about how the U.S military has sent a unmanned space ship into space on a mission with no revealed intentions. This is the fourth mission in the last five years. Past mission have varied from weeks to several months. The article in many instances speaks about how the intentions of these missions are unknown. Several people have made assumptions of why these missions are occurring. Several of these accusations, relate to the U.S making weapons in space. When faced with this opposition the  Pentagon assured the people of America that the reasoning for these mission was strictly for the purpose of learning more about the Earth's environment. The article then begins to explain how the U.S new model of their space shuttle, the X-37B, has revolutionized the space  shuttle. With this new technology, Scientists hope to learn more about Space, and the role earth plays in out galaxy.
The subject in which the article speaks about, is very essential and important to the Human race as a whole. When addressing the government sending ships into the sky, it important that we know what our government is up to. However, when not being told the true intentions of these missions, it is important for americans to keep an eye out for what our government could really be up to. Yet, when discussing the  space travels themselves and the new technology in space, it is very significant that we as humans are gaining a better understanding of the interstellar world, and how it functions.
I think that this was a very well written piece. I enjoyed how the author included several pieces on  how this can effect people in both positive and negative ways. The author also did an incredible job when addressing the U.S governments role in the topic, and how americans are unaware of what is actually occurring on these missions. Lastly, I think that the piece would be better if Kenneth Chang, put more opinions of professionals in his piece, It would allow the reader to obtain more information on the topic. Overall, I think this was very good read, and a well written piece.

  1. Dylan’s current event review of Kenneth Chang’s 2015 article in The New York Times was very interesting from a reader’s standpoint. One thing I like about Dylan’s review was that he picked a topic that sort of has a bit of obscurity. No one (besides the people involved, obviously) really knows the actual purpose of sending the spacecraft into space, so an article like what Chang wrote makes the reader question the government’s motives in sending the rocket into orbit. Secondly, I like how he kept things nice and short and concise, and did not focus on unimportant things that would have dulled down the review. Thirdly, I like how Dylan picked a topic that affects not only the Earth, but space itself. Sending these rockets into space could have a number of implications in Earth’s orbit, and it will be interesting to see if space weapons really are being constructed. While Dylan’s current event was well written, I think he could have added a few quotes into his review to add a bit more detail. Also, I think he could have explained more on how the X-37B has revolutionized the space shuttle. All in all, if I were to take on thing away from this, it would be that the government does not always tell us the truth, and that what they do could affect more than the Earth.

This was a very interesting article on a topic that I had not heard much about until reading this article. I always wondered about the outer space activities the U.S. had been performing, but I had not seen anything publicized in the news. Dylan did many things well in his current event. For instance, Dylan started off his current event with a well written summary of the article. By starting off with an effective and informative summary, the reader gains a thorough understanding of the topic that you are discussing, without having to read the article. Also, Dylan did a nice job expressing his opinion on the article in his critiquing paragraph. He mentioned what he liked about the article as well as what he disliked. Although this does not seem like an important step, it is a crucial piece to a current event. Finally, Dylan did a good job connecting the article to how it would affect citizens of the U.S. By making connections to how the topic can affect the reader, he or she will become more engaged and want to learn more about the topic. Getting the reader more engaged while reading the article is a key component to writing a great piece. Although Dylan did many things well in his current event, there is always room for improvement. For example, if Dylan proofread his current event before he submitted it, there would not be any grammatical errors or missing words in his writing. Unfortunately, this was not the case. Also, Dylan’s current event would have been a little more powerful if he included quotes from professionals who discussed the topic in the article. By incorporating quotes into the article, the reader will have several different perspectives and arguments to analyze and reflect on while reading the current event. One thing that shocked me about this article was the amount of information that the government is hiding from us, the people of the U.S. I always heard of myths that the government was performing missions in outer space behind our backs, but I never really expected it to become a reality. This was a very interesting article on a topic that after reading Dylan’s current event, I want to learn more about.
