I read an article that covers the topic of why so many migratory birds are found dead in New York City. The author started off the article by using someone else’s perspective, Melissa Breyer, who does volunteer work to clean up dead birds from the streets. She claimed that last Tuesday over 230 dead birds were picked up from around the World Trade Center. I found this information really interesting and was hooked into the writing from that point on. After Melissa's story, the author included more research into the article such as NYC Audubon stating that between 90,000 and 230,000 birds are killed every year because they collide with glass buildings. And also that a study from 2019 claimed that nationwide bird deaths caused by building collisions could get as high as one billion. After these pieces of information are added, the author gets into why this is occurring. Sirens Lao, a researcher at the San Francisco Bird Observatory, states that birds are attracted to bright city lights. So when birds migrate for the winter and pass through cities, their course often changes because they fly closer to the lights. And lastly, the author ends the article by explaining how we can lower the number of bird deaths. These actions include dimming lights during seasons of migration, turning off any unnecessary lights at night, and lowering blinds. The World Trade Center is now going to take action to lower the collision numbers, and if others were to follow these simple guidelines, more birds can survive through migration.
This article could have a great impact on society as it could change people's perspectives of carelessly leaving lights on overnight and save many animals. This could also lead to a more sanitary environment as having dead animals around could lead to infections and viruses.
Overall this article is pretty well written. It covered most necessary topics such as why this is occurring and how to prevent so many collision deaths in birds, along with including some research on just how many birds this could occur to in a year. It would have been beneficial to add why birds are attracted to light so the reader could have an even greater understanding of why this is happening, but the article is still quite informative.

I thoroughly enjoyed Brigitte’s review of the article, “Hundreds of Dead Migratory Birds Line the Streets in NYC,” by Becky Sullivan. Her article was about how bird deaths are rising due to collisions with glass buildings, with between 90,000 and 230,000 birds killed by this cause each year! I particularly enjoyed how Brigitte wrote her summary of the article in a concise and easy to understand way, and she did a great job of only taking the most important points out of the article, and formatting her summary to have a nice flow. I found that I was able to understand the gist of the article easily. In addition, Brigitte did a great job also because she included statistics and facts into her review. She wrote, “the author included more research into the article such as NYC Audubon stating that between 90,000 and 230,000 birds are killed every year because they collide with glass buildings. And also that a study from 2019 claimed that nationwide bird deaths caused by building collisions could get as high as one billion.”(Clark) These statistics intrigued me and made me want to read more, and also helped me better understand the issue. I also thought it was great how Brigitte did not leave any questions unanswered, and clearly gave an explanation for why the birds were colliding into the glass buildings, and also included what we can do to help the birds. “And lastly, the author ends the article by explaining how we can lower the number of bird deaths. These actions include dimming lights during seasons of migration, turning off any unnecessary lights at night, and lowering blinds. The World Trade Center is now going to take action to lower the collision numbers, and if others were to follow these simple guidelines, more birds can survive through migration.”(Clark)
Although Brigitte did a fantastic job, I believe that there were a couple things she could have done to make this review even better. Another way she could have displayed her information is by use of quotes. Without the quotes it is still great but quotes would help the overall understanding of the article for the reader, by providing perspective. In addition I wish she could have elaborated a little more on how this impacts our society. I feel like her explanation was cut short, and it would have improved her work even more, to elaborate.
I definitely enjoyed reading her review of the article. I learned a lot about this issue(since I wasn’t aware of this problem) and I also learned about the importance of turning off your lights when you don’t need them on. Overall, I really liked how she reviewed the article, how she was very clear in her explanation, and also how she gave a critique. After reading this review, I am definitely more curious about this issue, and want to learn more!

I enjoyed reading Brigitte Clark’s review of the article “Hundreds Of Dead Migratory Birds In New York City Prompt Calls For Dimming Lights” published by NPR. Her article summarized how hundreds of thousands of birds are colliding with glass buildings and that their death rate is increasing dramatically. This states a true problem that is going on today that must be solved. Birds are a very important part of our environment and we need to protect them. She states the logistics as to why this is happening. “Sirens Lao, a researcher at the San Francisco Bird Observatory, states that birds are attracted to bright city lights. So when birds migrate for the winter and pass through cities, their course often changes because they fly closer to the lights” (Clark). She states the reasoning for this problem which helps us to understand what is going wrong. Clark also gives us numbers to understand how largely the bird population is affected by these collisions. “Between 90,000 and 230,000 birds are killed every year because they collide with glass buildings. And also that a study from 2019 claimed that nationwide bird deaths caused by building collisions could get as high as one billion” (Clark). This information she includes in her review makes us readers understand the real issue this article is addressing. Lastly, Clark makes suggestions from the article on how we as individuals can help reduce the numbers of bird collisions into glass buildings. Such as dimming lights during the season of migration, lowering blinds and turning off any unnecessary lights during the night. Giving possible solutions is very important and intrigues the reader on how they can help out with this ongoing issue.
Areas of weakness listed in this article are very few. If anything I would have liked to see Ckark maybe expand on her thinking and make the review longer. However she did say what she needed to say about the article she was reviewing. Another possible weakness would be the fact that there wasn’t much critiquing in her review. I would have also liked to hear her opinion on the article and how the writer could have improved his/her work. In the end, Clarks review on this article was very impressive.
Clarks review on the article “Hundreds Of Dead Migratory Birds In New York City Prompt Calls For Dimming Lights” by NPR was honestly a very intriguing review. The way her writing was organized was impressive because she put everything in a place where in the end it would be connected and analyzed. She also stated so many logistics therefore she wasn’t just saying her mind she was also giving facts. Clarks review was very interesting and I am honestly interested in this topic and I would love to learn about it more and encourage others to do the same.

This review of the article, “Hundreds of Dead Migratory Birds Line the Streets in NYC,” by Becky Sullivan, done by Brigitte Clark was very well written as well as informational. The article covered the topic of the decreasing population of migrating birds due to the high collision rate of migrating birds to glass buildings in NYC. Brigitte’s writing was succinct as well as very comprehensible. She gave a lot of information which provided the reader with much understanding. For example, “And also that a study from 2019 claimed that nationwide bird deaths caused by building collisions could get as high as one billion”(Clark). She also provides background information on why these collisions were occurring. “Sirens Lao, a researcher at the San Francisco Bird Observatory, states that birds are attracted to bright city lights. So when birds migrate for the winter and pass through cities, their course often changes because they fly closer to the lights” (Clark). Lastly, she provides solutions to this problem in hopes of decreasing the number of collisions. “These actions include dimming lights during seasons of migration, turning off any unnecessary lights at night, and lowering blinds” (Clark). This review provided awareness for the topic, and could potentially cause the rate of collisions to lower.
Even though this review was fantastic, there is always room for improvement. I think that if Brigitte included more quotes directly from the researchers, it would allow the reader to see multiple perspectives and get a deeper understanding of this growing issue. Another way to improve this review is to show how this issue has currently been dealt with. Have people been lowering their blinds and dimming their lights? This excess information would allow the reader to see how much of an impact they can actually have on this issue.
I highly encourage people to share this review to spread awareness on the issue. She was concise, as well as informational, and she conveyed this problem in a manner where anybody could make an effort to help. Now I will participate in the solution by dimming my lights at night and shutting my shades. This review was very well written, and it inspired me to learn more about the topic!

I read Bridget Clark review on the article, Hundreds Of Dead Migratory Birds In New York City Prompt Calls For Dimming Lights. The article talks about how hundreds of birds that are migrating are being killed and not because of predators its because of skyscrapers in downtown Manhattan. The article then focuses on ways that us as humans can help this problem. Bridget does a good job on explaining these parts in her article. One of the good things that Bridget did was get right on point on what the article is trying to say. Right after she done giving credit she goes ahead and says “Melissa Breyer, who does volunteer work to clean up dead birds from the streets. She claimed that last Tuesday over 230 dead birds were picked up from around the World Trade Center.”(Clark 1). The reason why I thought this was good, because after you said this you pulled the reader in, and now he or she wants to learn more about what you are trying to say because you cant just say 230 birds died without an explanation to whats happening. Another thing i though you did really well was explain why these birds were dying and how come so much are. She said “90,000 and 230,000 birds are killed every year because they collide with glass buildings. And also that a study from 2019 claimed that nationwide bird deaths caused by building collisions could get as high as one billion.”(Clark 1) The reason I liked this was because its crazy to think that up too 230,000 birds die because of hitting skyscrapers, i just think that's crazy that volunteers have to pick up so many dead birds because they hit buildings. The last thing i thought that you did really good was when you explained how to save these birds and make there migrations easier, she said “These actions include dimming lights during seasons of migration, turning off any unnecessary lights at night, and lowering blinds.”(Clark 1). I though you did a good job here because you explained exactly what and how we cn helped with these birds. The reason why i chose there 3 reasons was because you did a good job explaining a problem and giving reasons on how to help these problems.
Although I though you did a good job explaining the article and what it was trying to say. I thought you could have done a better job by maybe explaining the article a little bit more. I knew what you were talking about because i read he article, but if a reader and didnt read the article and had no background information i think it would have been hard from them to understand what you were talking about. So i would have explained the article a bit more. I also wish you sorta explained the evidence that you put in so it wasn't just there. Maybe next time explain it and and say something interesting about it.
After reading this blog i realized and learned a lot about the problem with birds migrating, i thought it was crazy that around 200,000 birds die a year because they hit skyscraper. But the most interesting thing i learned is that birds cant see glass. I never do this or was aware of it in the first place. So thanks you for telling me about that, because now I can ast a little bit smarter around my friends. Overall i thought she did a really well job with the blog.

Brigitte Clark wrote a review on the article, “Hundreds of Dead Migratory Birds Line the Streets in NYC” by Becky Sullivan and she did a good job on many things in her review. One aspect she did well was putting a lot of details in her article summary, “After Melissa's story, the author included more research into the article such as NYC Audubon stating that between 90,000 and 230,000 birds are killed every year because they collide with glass buildings. And also that a study from 2019 claimed that nationwide bird deaths caused by building collisions could get as high as one billion.” (Clark). In this part, she added lots of details and statistics that are good to know and that really show the reader how awful this issue has become and change their perspective on why we need to worry about it. Another thing Brigitte did well was she included ways that people can change their behaviors to stop collisions from happening. In her review she said, “This article could have a great impact on society as it could change people's perspectives of carelessly leaving lights on overnight and save many animals.” (Clark). In this part of her review she suggests ways that they can help lower the death rate of birds in New York, by turning all their lights off at night so the birds won’t run into a window thinking they can go closer to the source of a light. Finally, another thing she did well in her review was the way she organized everything she wrote in her review, “The author started off the article by using someone else’s perspective… the author included more research into the article… the author gets into why this is occurring.” (Clark). Especially during her summary of the article she read, in every sentence Brigitte started off with words that told the reader what the author did next in the article which made it much easier to understand.
While there are so many things in this review that Brigitte did so well, there’s always a way to make a few fixes to have her writing be so much more amazing. One thing she could’ve added to her review was more information about where to find the article she read. Brigitte said in her review, “I read an article that covers the topic of why so many migratory birds are found dead in New York City. The author…” (Clark). This was the first sentence in her review and although she did add a citation to the article she read at the top of her review, when talking about the article, she never said the name of the article, the author or what news website/paper she got the article from. If she didn’t have a citation at the top, it would’ve been much harder to find the article if somebody wanted to read it and find out the whole story so next time, I would’ve put the name, author and newspaper she got the article from. Another thing Brigitte did that could’ve been a little bit better is that during the entire review, she didn’t have any actual quotes from the article. Adding quotes from the article could’ve improved her writing more because then the reader would know that the information she was saying was real, easy to find if reading the article and have a different point of view on the topic of the article.

ReplyDeleteWhen looking at all of the reviews I could choose from to write a comment about, Brigitte’s title of her review really stood out to me as more interesting to read about especially because this issue is happening just a hour away from where we all live and I wanted to figure out why so many innocent birds were dying. I think when reading the review, the thing that had me most impressed was learning how new this issue is. In her review Brigitte wrote, “She claimed that last Tuesday over 230 dead birds were picked up from around the World Trade Center.” (Clark). When I clicked the link to the article and found out that the article was written just a little over a week ago I was kind of shocked and mind blown that birds are probably crashing into glass buildings right now which is really sad to think about. Overall this review really helped me understand how recent and terrible this problem is and how we need to spread this issue to others living in the city to help save birds from killing themselves.

Brigitte reviewed the article “Hundreds of Dead Migratory Birds Line the Streets in NYC,” by Becky Sullivan, and she did a very good job. Brigitte did a very good job by explaining the conflict at the very beginning on how birds are constantly flying into windows and how as a result, millions of birds are killed every year. Brigitte goes in depth about how this problem will be fixed and is very informative on the situation with the World Trade Center. Brigitte was able to take good evidence from the text as well; she used numbers to defend her claim and was able to explain those numbers to the readers.
Despite how good Brigitte’s writing was there were a couple flaws. Birgitte didn’t actually take a quote from the author, she used numbers but she didn’t actually cite the author in her writing. Also in her writing I felt like some of the first paragraph was just one run on sentence, it was mostly monotone and didn’t really show any change. One more thing that I think Brigitte could have done better was connecting ideas, while I was reading it it felt very disconnected and not together.
Overall I thought that this article review was good and it taught me a lot about how birds are dying very often from quite silly things and if they can be fixed by shutting your blinds and lights off then do it. It’s such a simple fix and could save people from possible diseases and illnesses from birds.
