Industry Still Churns, Even as Cleanup Plan Proceeds for a Canal

I read the New York Times article Industry Still Churns, Even as Cleanup Plan Proceeds for a Canal  by Kia Gregory. This article discusses the new plan to clean up the long time industrial, Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn, NYC. This canal is in the center of an industrial area of the city, as a result has become very polluted over the years. The site has been designated by the EPA as a Superfund site, this means the government will oversee the cleanup. The cleanup will last approximately eight to ten years with auxiliary maintenance lasting indefinitely. Unfortunately it is near-impossible to clean the canal completely, contamination goes as far as 100 feet deep in some places.

The pollution in the Gowanus canal is a concern for many New Yorkers living in the area. The canal will most likely be never clean enough to swim in and it will be years till the fish residing there are safe to eat. The canal also smells bad and looks very ugly which lowers real estate prices in the area. The clean-up of the canal will be an improvement and will make the surrounding area much more pleasant.

I thought this is a very thoughtful article pertaining to a pressing issue. Kia Gregory did a great job at stating the facts for the reader. The author did a good job of giving examples of companies that have been responsible for the pollution and bringing in professional opinions on the matter. Hopefully this will bring more attention and awareness to the decrepitated state of the city’s waterways.

  1. I thought Michael Moynihan did a good job of reviewing this current event article. He did a very good job of summarizing the article. It was quick and concise, but contained plenty of interesting detail that kept me focused. He also did a good job of explaining how this pertained to humans, and I liked how this article pertained to us since it is about a place in Brooklyn which is close by. I also liked this review, because he referred to specific things the author, Kia Gregory, mentioned about the canal, and its cleanup.
One thing that I felt Michael could have done better on was providing us with more details about the process of cleaning this canal, and what it is used for. He also should have included a few more details on the effect this will have on the people in the surrounding area. For example, more traffic, noise pollution, etc.
One thing that I learned from this article was how polluted some of these areas are and how much work still needs to be done. I also learned how harmful companies even today can be on the environment.

  2. Michael’s review of the article “Industry Still Churns, Even as Cleanup Plan Proceeds for a Canal” by Kia Gregory, was extremely well done and left me impressed. One great aspect of the review is how the article flows very well, by this I mean I was not bored at any point when I read the review, for it was extremely engaging. Another good aspect of the article was how there was a good amount of information from the article that went into the review. This allowed me as a reader to understand the current situation that was depicted in the article pretty well. I also believe that Michael did a very good job connecting the issue of the article with the lives of humans today. Overall he gave many good examples of how cleaning up the Gowanus canal in New York City would greatly benefit a great amount of people, who live next to the highly polluted canal.
Even though Michael’s review was very good I do have some suggestions that I believe would have helped the review in general. For example as I finished the review I saw that the review itself was a little too short for me, and could have had more added to it in all three sections of the review. Another suggestion I would make for Michael is too have included how the situation about the over polluted Gowanus canal affected him. This would allow the reader to hear Michael’s opinion on the issue and not just on how the article itself was written.
One aspect of thee review that completely blew me away was how the Gowanus canal would need 8 to 10 years to clean up and allow for the water to not be as contaminated and dangerous as it is now. And another mind blowing fact is that the canal will never be completely cleaned up, this is because of how many years industry has taken advantage of the canal.

  3. I think Michael did a very good job of giving a brief review of the article. It focused on the main points and did not drag on. He also did a good job of explaining how this issue affects the lives of people by giving specific examples. Finally, Michael gave a good review of the article and gave examples about what he did and did not like about the article.
One thing Michael could have done was give information about how people are going to start cleaning up the canal. Also, it would have been nice to have some background information about what the canal was used for.
Overall, I thought Michael’s review was very well written and interesting. I learned that not only are people polluting the ocean, they are polluting the canals too.
