Amid Heavy Pollution, Beijing Issues Emergency Rules to Protect Citizens

In Beijing, China, there is a new system to try to reduce air pollution. For years, the air in cities in northern China, like Beijing (the capitol), has been heavily polluted by things like asbestos, ultraviolet radiation, and tobacco smoke. Substances like these are known to be cancer-causing substances. Air pollution in China gets especially bad in the winter when coal-powered heating systems are used. Now, when there is heavy air pollution, a blue alert will be put in place and an extra street cleaning will take place. When there is even heavier pollution, a yellow alert will be put out and another street cleaning will happen. One three days of predicted pollution, there will be an orange alert and factories and construction sites will close. When three days of serious pollution are predicted, the above actions will take place, as well as certain cars being able to drive on alternate days and schools will close. Also, the Chinese government has announced a project to clean the air, but it will not be easy or quick.

Issues like this are relevant in cities all over the world. Air pollution is a major issue and is the cause of many diseases, including cancer! The fact that schools have to close, not because of a naturally occurring issue, but because of a man-made environmental issue, is very bad. No country should be compromising the education of the next generation for needs that cause excessive pollution. Also, the fact that people are dying of diseases cause by air pollution is horrific. This issue can be fixed, and its very important that it does get fixed.

I enjoyed reading this article because it was very informative yet straight to the point. It wasn’t difficult to read and it kept me engaged. One thing that I would’ve liked to read more is statistics about the pollution and maybe statistics about the diseases it causes. Overall, I thought this was a very good article and I learned a lot from it.

  1. This article was very pleasant to read because of how nicely it flowed. Due to minimal spelling and grammar mistakes, the review never seemed to stop, which made it much easier to understand. Another reason it flowed so well was because of the use of different transition words and a variety of different starter words for each sentence. Also, the first paragraph was written very in the sense that the information was very clearly stated and appropriate amount of information was given. The writer of this article did a very good job in giving all the needed information on the issue; unlike some past writers who have only given the brief “who, what, where.” Finally, I liked how the writer connected her issue to our lives and how the issue in the article could affect us; not only us, but the whole world too and the lives of everyone.
One thing the author could have done better is to explain how certain things will help with the air pollution crisis, for example, the extra street cleaning. How does cleaning the street help reduce the amount of air pollution? I understand that the writer was trying to keep the plan short and simple so everyone could understand it, but maybe the writer could have used just a little more detail or added reasons to explain some of these steps. Another thing that I didn’t like about this review was how the author brings in this very serious problem like schools having to close because of air pollution, but then doesn’t elaborate on it. My question is, “Why are school s shut down? If it the air in the entire city that’s polluted, what’s the benefit to being at home and not learning?
One thing that impressed me is that the Chinese government has this system or plan to help with the air pollution. This impressed me because I know that air pollution is a big problem in the US too, but then why don’t we have a plan like the Chinese? I think should adopt this idea and create a plan of our own to try and stay ahead and try and stay healthy.

  2. I think Mia did a great job with this review! It flowed nicely and kept me engaged throughout the entire time I was reading it. I really like how Mia started off talking about what the problem was and then slowly transitioned into what was being done to fix it. I also really liked how Mia continuously informed us about the different types of things being done to fix and inform the people of china of taking action against pollution. Another thing i liked about Mia's article is that she related china's pollution to the rest of the world and how it could possibly effect it.
Mia's review was excellent, and i don't have much to critique, but one thing i think the writer could have done better is explain to us what we could do to resolve these problems and then explain to us how that would help in the case of how that would effect the world.
One thing i learned about air pollution reading this article is that school systems in China have to shut down or close due to the amount of air pollution circulating throughout the school. This review was very well written and i enjoyed reading it!
