Corruption in Peru Aids Cutting of Rain Forest

Corruption in Peru Aids Cutting of Rain Forest
By William Neuman and Andrea Zarate

This article discusses the effects of cutting down trees illegally in Peru and other countries. More than half of Peru is covered by dense forest, and the preservation of these forests is crucial to combating global warming. Also, the forests protect many species that live only in this region. In the past, Peru has passed laws to try to stop illegal logging, one of which was a 2007 trade agreement with the United States. Recently, large quantities of timber are illegally cut and are sometimes sent to the US to be used for flooring and furniture. It is believed that the cause of the corruption was authorities being bribed in order for loggers to cut down and take away the trees.

This article is important because illegal logging is still an issue today, and people need to become aware of what is happening around them in order to stop it. It’s important for people to understand the effects of logging and to figure out a way to try to prevent corruption in these countries. International demand for cheap illegal products is a main cause for illegal logging around the world, and because of this animals are losing their homes, the environment is suffering, and systems are growing more corrupt. The more awareness this gains around the world, the more people can try to prevent it from happening.

I thought this was a good article, but there were a few things that were missing. I think that the author should have included more information on the effects of illegal logging and how to prevent people from logging, because if this issue hasn’t been stopped already there is obviously more to it. The article was written in a way that was easy to understand, and helped me learn about a topic I wasn’t aware of before.

  1. Liv Cappello’s review of the article “Corruption in Peru Aids Cutting of Rain Forest” was overall a very well written review that I enjoyed reading. One great aspect of the review was how the summary of the article was not too long nor was it short, this allowed me not to be bored while reading the beginning of the article. Another great aspect of the article is how there is a good amount of information on the topic that the article is based on, there is also a great amount of detail that greatly increases how well I can understand the pressing issue that the article Liv reviewed talks of. One last aspect of Liv’s review that I believe made the review stronger was the critique that Liv wrote about the article. Liv went in deep detail on the faults and the successes of the way the article was written. This detailed critique allowed me as the reader to see the quality of the article.
Even though Liv’s review was great overall I still have some suggestions that I believe would help the review. One suggestion I have for Liv would have been to add in how the issue in the article directly affects her life, this would allow the reader to get more of an idea of how the issue impacts the lives of people who live in the US. Another suggestion I have is to add more information on how lumber is cut down illegally in Peru, this would allow people reading the review to think of ways to end the illegal operations involving lumber in Peru.
As I read the review of the article I was caught off guard by the information referring to how some of the lumber that has been cut down illegally in Peru in the past years, has found its way into the US to be used a wood for floors and furniture. This fact made me see how the corruption found in Peru also exists in the US when it comes to US companies buying cheap illegal goods.

  2. In the article “Corruption in Peru aids cutting of rainforest “the review by Liv was very good. The way she goes into very good detail about how the corruption in Peru is causing very bad thing to the Environment makes this a global issue. Also I really liked the way she also puts in some background details about the topic too. I also like the way it all ties up at the end which made this a very good summary.
One thing that Liv could have done a little better was to go in more depth about the timber being moved into the US from Peru illegally, if Liv were to go in full detail this would have been much better.
I like this summary of this article and how she adds something else instead of the issue of Chemistry and Science but going into other topics of life and science in general. I like the way of going beyond the science world too.

  3. In Liv’s review of the article Corruption in Peru Aids Cutting of Rain Forest she gave us some background about the topic, which helped my gain more understanding about the article. She also made sure that the review was short, as to not bore the reader. She also did a really good job of telling the reader about the importance of illegal logging and how it is a really big issue.
I think live could have given a little more information about what the article was about, or just a couple more details. I think Liv also could have given more information about the topic by linking related articles to the bottom of the review incase the reader wanted to learn more.
This was a really interesting article that gave a lot of good information and Liv reviewed the article very well.

  4. Liv’s review was very well written and to the point. She gave us a lot of background information to help us understand the issue she was discussing. She also made a point to explain why illegal logging is such a problem and how we can stop it. Liv could have given us a few more examples of where illegal logging is a problem to make the issue seem more worldwide than regional. Another thing she could have done a better is that she could have given more information about what is being done to prevent illegal logging in Peru. The corruption in Peru and the fact that the wood is being shipped to the US surprised me and made me wonder if the US has anything to do with the illegal logging. Overall I thought Liv did a great job of reviewing this article.

  5. Liv did a very good job of review in the article “Corruption in Peru Aids Cutting of Rain Forest” by William Neuman and Andrea Zarate. She had a very clear and concise summary, this is very important because it gives me the information the reader needs but not to the point where they get bored. She also had a very valid and clearly expressed reason why this topic is important to humans. It makes sense that we are destroying the natural habitat and that it will strongly impact our environment. We need to fix it. I also thought that her critique of the article was good and she explained what she thought would make it better.
There are a couple things I would change in this review. I think that her summary could have used some more specific details and facts about the illegal logging. It would be more informative, and would give the reader an idea of how bad this really is. Another suggestion would be to change the critique in a way that would help it flow better. It contained all of the components, and made sense, but I felt that it could’ve been smoother.
I learned that this problem existed in Peru and find it sad that people are destroying an entire forest just for a little extra money. I hope that this problem gets solved as soon as possible. Overall this review was very good and interesting, and I learned a lot.
