An alarm
goes off and it is a Monday morning and I realize that I have to go to school.
So I go through my daily routine and realize that the high today was only going
to be 22 degrees (F). But hopefully it is warming up, right? I read an article
called Freezing Out the Bigger Picture by
New York Times author Justin Gills. Turns out that the earth is warming up and
that the cause of the entire country in an artic blast is not caused what you
might think. The reason why it is so cold is because of global warming, not at
all what you might have expected. Scientists say this because in combination of
the hot weather in London (hot for winter that is at 50 degrees F) and the cold
weather in Minneapolis might be “a consequence of climate change” which is
caused by global warming. Another piece of evidence shows that a storm like
this has not happened in 40 years, which suggests that the past winters have
been mild ones without much snow or temperatures going down.
This
impacts all of us. Like I said before, I have to get up and walk to school
every day. It is much easier to accomplish a simple task like walking to school
during the spring and fall than it is during the winter, especially this year.
With temperatures so cold and snow piling up, it’s almost impossible. But how
can we stop such a thing from happening? Well we could start by helping to slow
the process of global warming. Because all previous winters storms were mild,
this one is the big one and it will affect everyone in the country until the
spring time where things start to warm up.
Overall, I
thought the article was very interesting. It had an interesting topic that relates
to what is happening nationally today, and it also had key information as to
why it is happening as it is. Even though these two points are excellent there
are some cons. For one the author didn’t exactly give the information to you in
an organized way. It took me a while to figure out the meaning and what he was
trying to explain. In the end though, I figured it out. This is my only
complaint with the article and I found it very informative otherwise.

ReplyDeleteWill, I liked how you made an outside connection. This made this current event interesting to read. I also thought you summarized the article really well and did a good job of getting the main point of the article across. The summary summarized the article well made the point and was not too long either. Finally, I liked how you asked questions and then answered them. This was a nice format.
Although it was good overall, I think some things could have been better. I think the summary could have been a bit longer and more detailed. It was a little bit too short. Also, most of the information was about how it relates to you while it should have focused more on summarizing the article.
One thing that I learned from this article was that global warming leads to colder temperatures. I thought global warming would lead to the world getting warmer as a whole and not getting warmer in some parts. This theory is new to me and I am intrigued by it.
Will did a great job on this summary overall. I really liked how he opened up the article with a connection to his own life. This grabbed my attention and made me want to keep reading. In addition, after Will states the main idea of the article, that global warming is causing the cold weather, he gives an example of a city in which this is happening. I liked how he backed up this statement with a fact from the article. A third thing I liked about this summary was how Will gave examples of how he personally is affected by it, instead of making a statement about people affected in general.
ReplyDeleteThere were very few things Will could have done to make this summary better. First, he could go into more specific detail in his summary of the article. The topic is interesting, but the summary is very general. Also, Will could have transitioned into different ideas more smoothly.
One thing I learned from reading the review was the fact that global warming could actually cause parts of the earth to become colder. I always assumed that global warming would make the entire earth warmer. I never would have thought that it could actually lower temperatures.
Will`s review on the article “Freezing Out the Bigger Picture” is really good .I liked how it was introduced and how he did he mention the impact of this weather in our routine, that is, as will said, really big.I also found good how will explained the global warming and it`s relation to these lower temperatures, which many people would say that is not related.
ReplyDeleteOne suggestion I would give to Will is that he could explain more how this winter differs from the last ones and specify more the title.I also think that he could put a little more information from the article, and references to it.
Something I learned reading this review was the fact that global warming, besides rising temperatures, can lower them too.It is something that many people will thing the logical, global warming worms the Earth. After reading this, I would say that global warming doesn`t only warms the Earth, but it creates drastic changing in temperatures.
I read Will Cioffi’s review of the article, “Freezing Out The Big Pivture” by Justin Gills. I think he did a spectacular showing the facts behind the recent snowstorms in the USA. He used interesting examples such as the one, which compared London’s reasonably warm temperatures to the cold temperatures in the USA. He wrote this review very well considering the fact that it was a reasonably complicated subject to explain.
ReplyDeleteThere were many positives to this review but there were also some shortcomings. I think he could have included a better summary of the article because at times, it could have been more length and detail. He included quotes and other details but I wish that he would have added in more facts and had actual statistics in the article. Also I disliked that he didn’t reference how it would be relevant in the future. This is important because if he had included global warming’s relevance to extreme weather in the future, this review would have been even more interesting.
It impressed me that he was able to teach me so much in such a small review. I never realized that global warming led to frigid snowstorms. I found this very interesting because it goes against all logic. Since winters in New York are usually mild (with some exceptions), I find it interesting that humans are responsible for having colder or more extreme winters. Hopefully this harsh weather can lead to a change in lifestyle to help fight against global warming. Overall, I thought this article was very well written and very interesting to read. This article brought up many good talking points that will be interesting to see the outcome of in the future.
Will's review of the article "Freezing Out the Bigger Picture" was great. The beginning really drew my attention in and made me want to continue reading like MIchael said. I thought the way his summary was worded made it easier for the reader to understand and did not confuse me. I also liked the fact how he made outside connections that were relatable to many of us.
ReplyDeleteOne suggestion I would make to Will is that the last paragraph is a bit repetitive. He could maybe use synonyms of the word interesting. I also think that he could a little more about the article although he did a good job making outside connections.
Before reading this review, I was unaware of the fact that the cold temperatures this winter were due to global warming. I only thought that global warming would cause warmer temperatures. I was impressed with Will's skill to make outside connections. Great job.
Will, your review of the article "Freezing Out the Bigger Picture" was nearly perfect. You're introduction really caught my attention as did a good deal of the first paragraph. I also really thought you did a great job throwing a couple subtle details into the summary, which kept it interesting and added extra factual backing to your summary. A final thing I thought you did very well was including the quote about the weather in Minneapolis. Although it was small, it was significant because it gave us some actually words from the article, and although small, gave us some sense of the article writer's writing style.
ReplyDeleteOne thing I would recommend doing is hitting on how we can fix this problem more. You mentioned global warming and how we should work to fix global warming, but didn't provide any specific examples as to how to do it. A person like myself knows how to do my part to help global warming, but some outsiders reading this review might not have the same outside knowledge as I do. A little extra detail in that section would be great. Also, I would extend the summary a little more than you did. I read the actual article and after reading, I noted that there were some other details you could've thrown into your summary to add your review a little more.
I had no idea before reading this article and your review of it that the cold temperatures were because of global warming. I mean, who would've though.... they are essentially exact opposites. I was interested by this theory and I will try to do a little more research on this topic. Your review has inspired me.
William did an excellent job connecting the review to his outside life, explaining how he had to trudge to school every day, but now the cold has struck, impeding his ability to do so. He also helps facilitate our understanding of how the country became colder through global warming, which seems a bit odd, but possible. I also enjoyed how short and sweet the response was, allowing for an understanding without causing boredom.
ReplyDeleteTruth be told, which is what I’m about to do, you could have made the article a bit longer without slowing the reader as it was a tad bit lacking, although just a bit. It is also densely focused on you and how it impacts you. It could be focused instead on how it impacts this town, the state or the country as a whole, I read that many states passed agreements saying that people should stock up on food and stay indoors because it was going to lower then -40 degrees F°.
One piece of information I learned from this was how the earth was at some sort of balance, where when hot parts became hotter, the cold parts became colder, of sorts.
Will did a good job of relating the article to every person and showing its relevance. He made the issue more engaging than the normal climate change article we read. He included some good details like the temperature differences between Minneapolis and London and just how unusual this climate change is.
ReplyDeleteI think this could have used a bit more details just about what evidence there is of this climate change. It may also have been good to include some information on what has had the biggest impact on causing this warming.
I thought it was very interesting to read the colder temperatures like the ones that we have been having in Bronxville are another example because you wouldn’t expect the cold to be evidence of global warming. It was an interesting and overall relatable article that was a good choice.
In Will’s review of this article, I liked how he talked about his own experience, making it more relatable to us. I also liked how he was able to sort through what was important in the article, and quickly get to the point. Another thing I thought Will did a great job on was expressing what he believed the author, agreeably, did wrong.
ReplyDeleteSome thing Will can improve on is the summary. Like I said, he quickly got to the point, but maybe too quickly. I think he needs to summarize with more detail, and not just state the main idea. Throughout his review, I also think Will should have given more specific examples from the article to more clearly express his views.
In the article Freezing Out the Bigger Picture, I found it interesting how people who were put into rooms that were warmer were more likely to say global warming was real. It was interesting to see how the mind sometimes blurs logic and senses.
