Current Event

I read the article Early Treatment is Found to Clear H.I.V. in a 2nd Baby, by Donald G. McNeil. This article is about how a baby was cured of the H.I.V. virus thanks to a series of shots and injections. This is not the first child that has been cured, as not long ago another infant was cured of H.I.V. but people were skeptical as to whether he had ever carried the virus. Now that a second baby has been cured, this confirms that it is possible to get rid of the H.I.V. virus.

Previously, we did not know whether the H.I.V. virus could be cured, but now we know for sure. This development of injections will help cure H.I.V. babies across the world and potentially lead to a cure for people of all ages. This is a great creation, as it will save and better many lives all over the world.

I thought that Donald McNeil wrote this article quite well. It contained a lot of information about the H.I.V. virus and previous attempts to cure it, rather than only talking about this one instance. It was very well written and informative. I learned a lot about H.I.V. and the process of curing thanks to this article.

  1. Brian did a great job of getting the point of the article across to the reader. He was very straightforward and addressed the issue well. Brian wrote a great paragraph of what he liked about the article and its strengths.

I thought Brian could have improved on some things. For example, he did not refer back to the test or put examples in his summary. By doing this it helps the reader understand more about the topic. In the article it talked about how a scientist named Dr. Bryson is working on a clinical trial testing the medicine on babies. This detail would have been a great example of what scientists are working on to further their investigation. I also think Brian could have not been so repetitive. Multiple times Brian brought up the fact that the H. I. V. virus can be cured. Scientists are not positive yet that it can be cured but they are studying more about the topic.

This article was very informative and I did not know that scientists are so close to finding the cure for a disease thateffects millions of people. If the trial stated in the trial works and cures many babies, that could change many lives.

  2. I reviewed the current event that Brian Kradjel wrote about how a baby was cured of the HIV virus. It was a good review because of its informative nature and structure. To be honest, I was a little curious as to what he would be talking about through his title “Current Event.” I was curious because the title didn’t give any sort of clue as to what I was reading. I had to rely on the information provided instead.

His review was well done but was lacking in paragraph structure and information. If I was a teacher grading this I would give it a B- for the reason of bad visual appearance. The review only has a couple sentences for the paragraph and by the way the sentences were formed, it looked like the author didn’t even read the original article. Also, I tried to find that original article and couldn’t find it. It was not properly sourced nor was the URL even listed.

Even though there were a lot of negatives, I will say that I was surprised to hear that such a thing is possible. I hope that the doctor responsible for curing this baby will be able to replicate the process to cure others. Hopefully he will!

  3. Brian did a good job reviewing the article about curing babies of the HIV virus. I liked how he stated that the discovery of being able to cure HIV from a baby, through shots and injections, helped save lives. In addition, I also liked how he gave information about another case in which this test happened, but, that the success of the shots on this baby showed that the injections proved to be true.
He gave a basic overview on what the article was about, but did not go into much depth at all. His sentence structure was off a lot of the time and he did not mention any facts on where this happened, why the HIV virus is so dangerous, etc. There was also no title or citation.
Even though he could have been more detailed, I'm always surprised to hear of breakthroughs in the study of diseases. This is important because it can help many in the future and cause less suffering for the person and their family.

  5. I read Brian’s review on the article, “Early Treatment is Found To Clear H.I.V, in a 2nd Baby” by Donald G. McNeil. I thought Brian had a great analysis to this article. One thing I really liked was how Brian was able to summarize a larger piece with a lot of information to make it understandable for students to read. I also really liked how Brian told us that before this there was some debatability and therefore this can certainly cure babies. Lastly I thought he did a great job highlighting how well the original article was written.
One thing I thought Brian could have done better was to explain more in detail how exactly the injections and shots work to cure the baby. This would be a large point of interest for readers. Another thing Brian could improve is the sentence flow of his paragraph, I thought the sentences couldn’t really flow and it made it more difficult to read.
Lastly, something that will really stay with me from the article is the fact that based on what doctors can now do to treat babies for HIV, they may be able to transform this into cures for all ages of people with HIV that would be a truly amazing thing. Great Job Overall.
