Is Homework Making Your Child Sick?

Enayati, Amanda. "Is Homework Making Your Child Sick?" CNN. Cable News Network, 01 Jan. 1970. Web. 23 Mar. 2014. <http://www.cnn.com/2014/03/21/health/homework-stress/index.html?hpt=he_t3>.

The article “Is homework making your child sick?” by Amanda Enayati discusses the effects, if any, that large amounts of homework have on children, both mentally and physically. Enayati talks about a study conducted by a lecturer at the Stanford Graduate School of Education that found that when students have to do three or more hours of homework each night, there actually are negative effects.  This study was conducted on “more than 4,300 students from 10 high-performing public and private high schools (paragraph six),” and focused on how homework loads affected health.  The effects that were discovered were migraines, ulcers, and other stomach problems, as well as tremendous amounts of stress put on students.  In fact, researchers believe that the first few problems actually derive from all the stress that is created.  At the end of the article, when asked about the correct amount of homework that should be given, the lecturer, Denise Pope, said, “in high school, nothing over two hours. In middle school, no more than 90 minutes.”

After reading this article it is clear that there is a direct link between this article and our lives, considering the fact that we ourselves are students.  There have been stories about how doing so much homework “makes me sick,” but this study is so vital because it actually validates that statement.  Hopefully if schools now know the effects that different amounts of homework have on students, they will be able to set a limit on the amount of homework given.  This is important because the limit would ensure that students were learning the most they could at one time without hurting themselves.

When I first saw this article it automatically appealed to me, because it had to do with homework hurting students, and what student isn’t okay with doing less homework?  After reading it I was really surprised to find out that there actually was a correlation between homework load and student health.  I thought that this article was really well written because all the information was laid out in an organized way that was easy to follow.  Although there were some parts of the article that could have gone more in-depth, overall it was really great and I definitely recommend that you read it.  I do however wish that there could be a follow up study to help to further validate the results.

  1. Will, I think you did an amazing job on your article review. First off, you did a really good job on your summary. You not only focused on the main points of the articles but also incorporated a plethora of quality details. Next, your connection between the article and how it is important to us was on point. It made sense and you elaborated on the idea that this article affects us directly as well. Finally, your topic sentences for each of the three paragraphs you wrote were very strong. Each one of them introduced the main idea of the paragraph immediately and locked the reader in.
It was hard to find things that you need to work on. Your review is so good in so many areas. One thing I would suggest though is going into more detail about the harmful effects of too much homework. Your whole review is based on the idea that too much homework is detrimental to students, yet you don't elaborate on the extend of these negative effects nor do you explain the ones that you list. I would also suggest using less commas in your writing. Although your writing is grammatically correct, the excess of commas takes away from the flow of your review.
I really had never thought someone would take the time to do a legitimate study on this topic. Overall, I had given the thought of "maybe too much homework is detrimental to our health" some thinking before not much. I put it to the back of my mind. This whole article was a revelation to me. I would never have thought in a million years that there's a set time that should be set on the maximum about of homework given on any given night. I found this article and the facts that came with it incredibly interesting.

  2. I think Will did a great job on reviewing his article. First, the title alone made me curious to read the article because it affects students. Will did a great job summarizing the article. I also liked how Will added quotes from the article to really back up the information.
One thing Will could expand on is the harmful effects that too much homework can do to someone. I also think Will repeated himself a bit in this review. For example, Will said how too much homework could be detrimental to ones health quite a few times.
What really impressed me about Will's review was his wide use of vocabulary. I was surprised that someone conducted an actual study on how too much homework can be harmful, like Ethan said. Great job Will.

  3. I think Will did a great job picking an interesting article that appeals to the reader. I had heard about this argument earlier because it was on the news and was wanting to learn more about it, and i learned some very interesting things reading this review. Will also did a great job of summarizing the article in a way that it is easy for the reader to understand. I also liked how Will added some quotes from the article to support the information given.

As Ethan and Alexa said I think Will could have expanded more on the harmful effects too much homework can have on people. Since his whole review was about how too much homework affects a students health it would have been nice to have more information on the types of harmful effects it can cause.

Overall, this study was an eye opener to me because I had never thought that too much homework could be harmful towards ones health. Like Ethan and Alexa I was very surprised that someone actually conducted a study on this topic, and I think it should make some teachers reconsider how much homework they give us each night.

  4. Outstanding job William. This was an extremely interesting topic, and you presented it very intelligently. I like how you told us what was the beginning cause to these effects, which was stress from too much work. Although what about later in life, I feel school might teach you to learn to live with this stress and making it easier to cope with later on. That is just an idea. Secondly, I like how you brought up suggestions of what were the recommended amounts for middle school and high school. I was amazed by how little amount of time you should be spending on homework. Third, I thought it was great that you explained that this idea is well supported and has been tested on many top schools.

Even though your review was superb, I would like to say a couple thoughts I had that I think would have made it even better. If you went into more depth of the negative affects of homework on you, like also how it affects your family and social life and not just your health. I also thought it be interesting if you brought up the extreme side of this topic, that there shouldn’t be any homework at all.

The one thing that really got to me in this review is that people in high school should only spend two hours on homework a night. Most people I know spend way more and I spend a good amount more too.

  5. Will did a really good job review this article. I liked how he introduced the details, as the number of students that participate, the name of the institution that did this experiments, etc. also liked how Will mentioned the citation for the quotations that he used from the article. He also did a good summarizing of the article, giving the most important information about this study.
I think Will could just make few changes in this article. He could explore more the affection of what doing so much homework have on us. I also think that he could introduce the issue of the research in the beginning a little more, instead of saying the content of the article in few words.
I didn`t know before reading this article that too much homework brings bad results. I always thought the opposite of that, that more homework brings more practice and better results. I was really good to know about this study which brings a really important issue, that affects almost every student.

  6. Will did a great job reviewing this article. He explained the topic and how it relates to us very well. I also like how he included quotes from the article. Lastly, he did a great job at providing details while still making it interesting and easy to understand.

One thing Will could have done to improve his summary would be to give more examples of the negative effects that come from having too much homework. He listed a few but I think he could have included more. And lastly, he could have included if the schools that tested this study were going to lessen their amount of homework.

Will did a great job on his review and I enjoyed reading it. I found it especially interesting since it relates to our lives as students and could affect us.

  7. Will Vranka’s review was amazing! If I had not read his review, I would not have even known that such a study was being done. The way that Will explains how this is important and a big deal is very well done. Not only did he do such a good job of explaining in further depth about the information, he was literally using the original article to his advantage while doing it. I also love how he took an article that is relevant to our day to day lives as students from a reliable source (CNN).

Even though my appreciation for this article is high, there are a couple of areas to improve on. First area to improve on is to make the topic sentence of his first paragraph a hook to bring the reader into the main idea. Just stating the article name and author is not good enough for bringing in readers. If I didn’t look at the title, I would have skipped the article and moved onto another one. I don’t mean any disrespect to Will, but it is the truth. Another area of improvement is maybe to have more of a stronger second paragraph. I don’t really have a reason for this but I just feel it in my gut that it could be improved.

Besides the pros and cons of this review, the main point is the thing we need to understand. The issue is true that too much homework is bad for student health, just the amount of work that our teachers give us is an example of that (I apologize for any insulting comments to the teachers of Bronxville High School. Sentences with any insulting statements are only being used for a comical reference to the other students and are not in anyway true. I accept full responsibility if this insults anyone. Thank you. ☺). Even though I have not heard of such a thing happening before now, I now realize that this could be a legitimate problem to the health and safety of students.

  8. I thought that Will's review was really well written. The summary included all of the details, and later in the article he analyzed the details quite well. I also thought he picked a good article, as it connects to our daily lives. Lastly, I thought that Will's topic sentences did a good job of setting up his paragraphs.

Though this was very well written, there are a few things that I would change. Will could have gone into depth about the "harmful effects" of homework. Also, I thought there were a lot of run-on sentences.

I learned that homework could affect your health. I did not know this before reading the article summary, and I was surprised that it did.

  9. I felt like this was a quality review. I enjoyed the large amount of direct quotes from the article that you used. I also enjoyed that you stated what experts say an acceptable amount of homework would be instead of just focusing on the effects. However, I did enjoy that you listed all of the effects out in one go instead of spreading them out.
I think that this review could have been made better if you included what the article could have gone into more depth on. I would also like to know why stomach problems were prevalent in particular.
I was not aware that homework could actually have an effect on someone’s mental health. I always thought it was just people complaining. This article was eye opening for me.

  10. This was written in an excellent way. This is mostly to completely true about our school. There were lots of great details, which really tied the article together.

I didn't really see anything he could have revised, even though some are saying there are run on sentences, which there seem to be none really.

I knew that lots of homework wasn't good, but I never knew that it was bad to that extent. Before reading this, I knew not that much about the effects of lots of homework.

  11. I think Will did a great job with this current event. One thing he did well was giving a summary of the article. The summary gave me a good idea about the subject of the article. Also, I thought he did particularly well incorporating a quote from the article, which I have not seen in a current event write up yet. Finally, Will did a great job connecting the article to our lives.
One thing Will could improve on is making his sentences flow more easily. Some of his sentences were a little awkward to read. Also, Will was missing a few commas in his article review, so that is one more thing he could improve upon.
Something I learned was that homework could physically hurt you. I knew it caused a lot of stress, but I did not know that this could eventually lead to health problems such as stomach ulcers. I found this summary very interesting and I think Will did a great job writing it.

  12. I read Will’s review of the article “Is Homework Making Your Child Sick?” by Amanda Enayati. I thought Will did a really great job. One thing I love that Will did is in his analysis of the article was not only give what the author did well but what they didn’t do as well. Another thing I liked was how Will connected the article to our daily lives. Lastly, I think Will really did a nice job summarizing the information in the article to help us understand it all, and how well his article really relates to us.

One thing Will could have done better is maybe summarize a little more as in the amount of writing he wrote might have been a bit excessive. One more thing that might be useful next review is to give the sentence flow, because there is a lot going on and the structure of the sentences really helps readers.

Something that really stuck after reading the article and Will’s review was the fact that work load has a direct impact on student’s wellbeing. This fact really stayed with me because students like myself can be impacted by these studies. Overall Will did an excellent job.

  13. I read Will Vranka’s review of Is Homework Making Your Child Sick, by Amanda Enayati. I think Will did a great job writing this review and it was really written well. I really enjoyed how Will quoted the article and really gave evidence for the points he made. Also he stated facts which really helped emphasize the points that article was trying to talk about. Third, this article was written exceptionally well. I really liked his writing style; it really made the article come to life.
Although Will did a great job writing this review, I didn’t like everything. I thought that he could have had better grammar at times. For example, he forgot several commas. Also, I thought that he was excessive with his examples at time. This hurt the flow of his review several times throughout the review.
This article taught me a lot about homework and reinforced the opinions that I already had. Generally I think that specific teachers and teachers in general don’t always realize how much homework they give their students and it can get very excessive, especially when students spend 6 hours to complete their homework and stay up until 3 am to complete their work. Most teachers understand excessive homework and make sure to keep their homework levels acceptable.

  14. Overall, Will did a great job on his review of “Is Homework Making Your Child Sick?” by Amanda Enayati. First off, I like how Will summarized the article. He made it simple so that anyone could understand the main idea of the article. I also like that Will connected the article to our daily lives, since we all do homework and feel pressure at times. Lastly, I like that Will gave both sides to his analyses on the author; he said what she did well and what she could work on.

To make his review better, I think will could have given a bit less summary. He had detail, but maybe too much given it was just a summary. Also, I felt Will sometimes was a bit choppy in his writing. Nest time, or in english class, Will can work on that.

I was not surprised, to find out a student’s workload has a direct impact on their well being. I was glad, though, Will chose to review this article because it is something which we can all understand and have experienced at times.

  15. Chemistry homework → comment

I found Will’s article to not only be concise and to the point, but also vividly written to the point where it drew me in, wanting me to continue reading. This allowed for a believable setting of data to be presented. Another wonderful thing that Will created was his title. The title was a title that immediately caught my attention, as a student I thought it would be an interesting read, and boy was I right. Coming from the point of view of a student who is affected by homework (any student, ever) it shows that not only the students are wondering whether the amount of homework is causing problems.

One thing I did notice is he was very one sided with his summary, while not too much is to be expected it would have been nice to hear what professionals running the education system. As many before me have said, I would like to know all the downsides that can be listed, as just for the sake of knowing it.

I was surprised, as I looked around for more studies of the sort, by the sheer amount of research being done on the matter, there have been many wonderful studies to show how the limit is necessary.

  16. I would say that overall Will did a good job of reviewing “Is Homework Making Your Child Sick?” by Amanda Anayati. One thing I really like about his review is how he directly quotes experts from the article. This makes it so that we know that this is a serious issue that experts researched. Another thing I really like about Will’s review is how he relates the article to himself, which helps to show how this article affects people’s lives. One last thing I like about his article review is how he includes facts that are in the article, which helps to show just exactly how too much homework can affect students.
Although I thought the article review was written pretty well overall, there were a few things that I thought Will could’ve done to improve his article review. For example, Will said that the article could have gone into more depth in parts. He could have given a specific example of where the author should have gone into more depth. Also, I believe that Will should have shown both sides of the article. Will only talks about the negative effects of homework, but the article also talks about positive effects of homework, which Will doesn’t include. This leads the review to seem bias.
One thing that amazed me about this article was that experts had actually found a connection between students’ stress and their physical health. Pope, a lecturer at Stanford Graduate School of Education, said, “ We found a clear connection between the students’ stress and physical impacts – migraines, ulcers and other stomach problems, sleep deprivation and exhaustion, and weight loss.” To me it was fascinating to learn that too much homework can actually cause physical problems in students. Overall, I thought this article and its review were well written.
