LSD, Reconsidered for Therapy

This article discusses a Swiss study in which patients facing end of life anxiety were given doses of LSD. Patients who were given full doses of LSD “improved by about 20 percent on standard measures of anxiety…” Patients who were given smaller doses, however, only had their anxiety become worse. Although the drug caused intense distress in some patients during their trip, there were no permanent side effects found. The study, however, was far too small to bring truly conclusive results.
With this new method of treating end of life anxiety, people with terminal illnesses will be able to spend their final days at peace or even happy. Future clinical trials of the drug may lead to LSD becoming a regularly prescribed treatment for individuals with terminal illnesses.

I thought that this article was very interesting in addition to being well written. There were many quotes from professionals placed in the article and it was very easy to understand. I feel like the article could have elaborated upon the patients who were given smaller doses and why they had their anxiety become worse.

  2. Sean did a good job with his review because he used direct quotes from the text. I really liked the way he spoke about how this topic effects himself and those around him. I was also impressed because this is a really interesting topic because LSD is a really dangerous drug so I'm very surprised by how Switzerland is considering using it for anxiety.
However, Sean could have spoken more about who exactly in Switzerland is testing this idea, and he also didn't include the link or any bibliography for this article. This review as a whole could've been more detailed but its still good.
I was really surprised by this review after learning that the LSD is actually more helpful in larger doses. Sean did a fabulous job!

  4. Sean did a good job reviewing the article, LSD, Reconsidered for Therapy. I liked how he provided direct quotes from the article. I also like how he stated how giving people with terminal illness the drug, might cause their anxiety in their final days to lessen because illness and death affects all of us. In addition, I was impressed with the fact that he stated that these results weren't definite because they would still have to do more study.
Sean could have included a citation for the article and a link. He also was very brief in his summery of the article. He could have mentioned what LSD stood for and why it is so dangerous in other instances. If he stated this, it could have made it more clear on why this discovery was so impressive.
I was really surprised by this review because it's always interesting to learn how doctors are using harmful things like LSD, and using it to help people who are sick.

  5. Sean, your article review was good in three main aspects. First, you incorporated a very solid, specific, relevant quote from the article in your review, which added variety and detail. You also backed the quote up well with a good follow-up sentence, which related to the quote directly. Next, you presented the data that the article gave you very well, and made it easy for the reader to conceptualize. Last but not least, you did a splendid job explaining why you picked out this article in the last section of your review. You gave very specific reasons for your choice.
Two things I would recommend are perhaps giving a longer, more detailed summary, as well as not being too assumptuous of the reader's intellectual level. In terms of the summary, it is simple. Just be a little more detailed, throw a couple more facts from the article in, etc. As for the reader, a person reading your review might not understand what LSD does, why it is illegal, or what a "trip" is. It is a good idea to define these terms and give good background before launching into your review.
The headline of this article really caught my eye. LSD is supposed to be one of the worst drugs in existence. It screws you up completely. So the idea that it can be used as a remedy seemed astounding to me. Great article choice, Sean, and props to a good review too.

  6. I thought that Sean did a good job of showing the uncertainty of the use of LSD as a treatment where at times it seems good, but in other scenarios it doesn’t. He showed some of the promise that has been shown by using the drug in treatment. He also gave the lack of lasting side effects.
I think he could have told more about if the drug has negative side effects health wise that are not associated with this anxiety treatment. I think it also could have used just a little more background information.
This was such a surprising article that a drug like LSD could possibly be used for medical treatment. It seemed crazy that something that is always associated with harm could be used for medical treatment.

  7. Sean did a great job on summarizing the article he read. I like how he added a quote directly from the article. I also liked how he talked about how Switzerland is considering using LSD for medicinal purposes for people with terminal illnesses as an anxiety treatment.

I thought Sean could have added the link to the article at the end of his review of the article so others could find it more easily. I also wish he added his opinion on the article a little more at the end instead of mainly a summary of the article.

Something that really surprised me is that such a dangerous drug like LSD could be used for medicinal purposes to relieve anxiety. I would have never thought such a harmful drug could be used as a form of treatment.

  8. I though Sean’s review was very good. I liked how he used a direct quote from the article. I also liked how he talked about the study being so small that it couldn’t bring that great of conclusive results.

I think that Sean could have elaborated more in his review, because it was a bit on the shorter side. I also wish that he would have stated his opinion instead of just listing the facts from the article. Lastly, I wish he had included the link for his article.

I was surprised that patients who were given full doses of LSD improved by around 20 percent, while patients who were given smaller doses had their anxiety become worse. I was also surprised that LSD could be given as a treatment, because it is a dangerous drug.

  9. Sean did great on this review. I liked that he stated that patients could be happy before death as a result. I liked that he stated that different doses could have different effects. I also liked that he included a quote in the review.

I think he could have made this article better. Like Grayson said, it would have made it more interesting if he had added his opinion instead of just fact. Also, I think he should have included the link to the article.

I found it hard to believe that such a dangerous drug could actually do some good to people. Also, I was surprised that people who received full doses could improve by 20% on lowering anxiety, and those who had gotten smaller doses made the anxiety worse. I am mostly surprised that it is LSD helping the people because again, it is a powerful and harmful drug.

  10. One thing you presented very well Sean was how the numbers in anxiety have decreased because of LSD. That is absolutely astounding. Second, you also gave the negative side, which is great. You said that patients who were given small doses of LSD actually make their anxiety worse, which is extremely interesting when a large dose makes it better. The third thing is that after you said the negative small dose fact you pointed out that the article didn’t say why this was the case.

One thing that I thought you could of elaborated on was the people who were treated with LSD to help anxiety and maybe explain what is the main effect of LSD to clarify to the readers. Second, I think you could have done some extra research and actually find out why smaller doses of LSD make anxiety worse.

The most impressive fact that you pointed out was easily the one that LSD helps anxiety by twenty percent in large does, but not in a smaller. I thought this was a very interesting topic and a great write up.

  11. I read the review of the article, “LSD, Reconsidered for Therapy.” This article review was written by Sean Mooney and was very good. I really like how he included some small details like how the study was Swiss. And how included specific quotes such as “improved by about 20 percent on standard measures of anxiety…” I think this really helped me understand the article because it showed me the authors perspective. I think it was great that Sean chose an article that shed light on the medicinal purposes of a drug such as LSD because it is generally considered to be a dangerous drug by the general public.
There were some negatives to this article such as he left out some key details. For example, if he could of gone into a little bit more depth about who did the research, how many patients were tested, and the duration of the test for the long-term effects. Another negative is that the review did not have the best flow and could have used much better transitions.
I learned several things through this article. One thing I learned was that LSD does not always have to be a dangerous drug only to be used at parties. It also has medicinal purposes. I think that further studies should be done into this treatment for anxiety.

  12. This is an very interesting article. It is good to keep tracking of the scientific advances that are being developed. The review done by Sean explains really well the details of this new study and do they affect people with anxiety.I also liked that you mentioned what are the future steps of this research. The way Sean said that people will be able to spend their final days at peace or happy also was good to show the affect of this treatment.
I think however that the review could be a little bit longer and could have a little more information about who did that, from what institution/company.I also think that the citation refereeing where the article was found, the date, the name of the article and who wrote that.
It called my attention that this treatment could make a difference in the life of many people and it`s not known by many.I was also surprised by how a drug like LSD, used in this treatment, could bring some benefits, as showed by these Swiss researches.

  13. Sean did a great job reviewing the article, LSD, Reconsidered for Therapy. He did a good job incorporating important quotes into his summary. I also liked how he made the importance of this article very clear. Lastly, Sean presented the results of the experiment very well making it easy to understand.

To improve his summary, Sean could have included more background knowledge on what LSD is and why this discovery is so ground breaking. Also, he did not include a link to the article and a citation for it.

Before reading this, I had only heard of LSD hurting people. It is very surprising to hear that it can help people too. I never would have thought that a harmful drug like LSD could be used for medical purposes.

  14. Sean did an excellent job summarizing his article. He extracted the key information and made it easy for the reader to understand. The article had quite a lot of information but he was able to summarize it. Sean also referred back to the text, which many people forget to do. The quote was relevant and tied the summary together. I thought Sean’s incite on the article was well written and explained. He gave sufficient examples and his views on the article were interesting.
Sean could have incorporated more detail in his summary, for example how LSD was harmful. He could have incorporated more information and maybe added another quote. I also think Sean could have talked more about what LSD is, people may not completely understand what the drug is and what it does.
I found it fascinating how a drug which is known to be so dangerous can benefit people. Trips(from my knowledge) seemed to cause anxiety. I found it fascinating that it actually does the oposite.

  15. In three ways, I think Shaun did a great job of reviewing this article. Overall, Shaun summarized the article very well, making it easy for the reader to understand the general idea. Then, he incorporated specific and relevant quotes, which highlighted key elements of the article. He then preceded to back up the quotes with statements that explained why that quote was important.
Although the summer was understandable, it could have been with more detail, possible by presenting more specific date. Also, you made assumptions that the reader knew what you were talking, with slang words such as ‘LSD’ and ‘trip’. It would probably have been better to define these words.
I am surprised that LSD can be used in a good way. I thought when it first came out, it was used as therapy, but was found too dangerous, and then banned by the FDA. Like when doctors once thought smoking was healthy, maybe it is the same with LSD.

  16. I thought that Sean did a great job with this Current Event report. His summary was short and to the point, which was good because it got the idea out to the reader. In addition, he made a good connection to how this problem affects people in our world today. Finally, Sean made a good critique of the article he read and he gives the author a tip on how they could improve the article.
One thing I think Sean could have done better was to add more detail to his summary. His summary got the point across, but I think it would be more helpful to the reader if he added a little more detail. In addition, I think Sean could have added how this article affects him personally, instead of stating how it affects people in general.
Something I learned from this article was the fact that LSD could actually be helpful to some people. I always thought that LSD was a terrible drug that no one should ever use, but it apparently can help some hospital patients.
