“ABE, Pioneering Robotic Undersea Explorer, Is Dead at 16” is a great article that discusses the undersea robot’s career and death. ABE, short for Autonomous Benthic Explorer, was an undersea robot created in 1994. It was one of the earliest autonomous underwater vehicles designed for civilian use. Before ABE under water expeditions were done with small crowded submarines or unnamed research vehicles, tethered to ships. It’s technology was unlike anything the world had ever seen before. It was the first underwater vehicle to map a mid-ocean ridge and find hydrothermal vents, undergoing hundreds of successful expeditions underwater. Sadly, on March fifth it was lost at sea in southern Italy. Scientists suspect that it was most likely destroyed by the implosion of a pressure housing under enormous water pressure at a depth of about 10,000 feet.
The findings done by ABE currently have a great impact on the world today. In any scientific exploration new findings lead to miraculous and great new technology. ABE himself, was this new technology like this at one point. I am interested in seeing what new technology will come out to replace ABE.
I really enjoyed reading this article. It was well written and interesting. I think technology as advanced as ABE shows just how great advancements have come these days. It is cool and interesting to go from a submarine which could only go a certain level to an automatic robot that could reach depths up to 10,00 feet. I am extremely stunned and impressed with the technological advancements of today

  1. I enjoyed reading Ally’s review of “ABE, Pioneering Robotic Undersea Explorer, Is Dead at 16”. Ally did an excellent job in explaining ABE. She clearly stated what ABE was and what it did. Ally only wrote about the main ideas of ABE, which made the review not too long and simple. She also explained one of the possible reasons for the destruction of ABE in a clear and descriptive manner. I also thought that Ally did a great job in discussing where the robot was destroyed and when. Finally, Ally clearly explained why ABE was such a groundbreaking technological achievement.

    One part that I think Ally could have improved on is that she could have described what the ABE achieved so far and if people controlled where ABE went. I also thought that Ally could have written about what ABE is made of. Ally also could have written about the reason scientists put ABE underwater and what the purpose or goal was. Also, I thought she could have been more descriptive of the physical appearance of ABE. Since Ally did not clearly explain what ABE looked like it was hard to imagine it in the review.

    After reading Ally’s review I learned that there is technology like ABE in the world and that people are researching and inventing technology like ABE. I also did not know that people had a mars rover like robot in the sea. This article makes me wonder if there is a program like NASA but for underwater. Like Ally said in the article I also wonder what scientists will create to replace ABE. Overall Ally did a great job reviewing the article.

  2. In this review, Ally did a good job of explaining what the ABE is and what it did. She also did a good job of describing what happened to the ABE. She did a good job of explaining how good of technology this is and how technologically great the replacement for it could possibly be.
    One thing that Ally could have done is explaining the achievements of the ABE and explain what it has done. Ally could have also explained whom the scientists were who sent down and controlled the ABE.
    Before reading this review I was not aware of the achievement that have been made, such as Abe, deep under water.

  3. I thought Ally did an excellent job with her article “ABE, Pioneering Robotic Undersea Explorer, Is Dead at 16.” It was very concise and to the point. Ally did an excellent job explaining exactly what ABE was, and why such science is so important to us. She very thoroughly explained exactly what a robot like ABE does, and the kind of things that ABE, in specific, accomplished. Ally did an excellent job portraying the advancements in technology that led from submarine usage to ABE. I agree with her statement that it is really interesting to see how technology has progressed.
    I think Ally could have made her review better by including more details about why ABE is so important. I would really like to have learned a little bit more about ABE’s history, and what ABE could have contributed to science had this mishap not occurred.
    Before I read Ally’s review of this article, I was relatively unaware of robots like ABE’s existence. I think it is very interesting to learn about such technology, and vitally important to learn about the improvements and modifications being made. I feel that instances like this one with ABE lead scientists to develop better technology. I would be interested to see the types of technology that follow ABE.

  4. Ally did an excellent job reviewing “ABE, Pioneering Robotic Undersea Explorer, Is Dead at 16.” It was well written and concise. She clearly explained why this technology was so revolutionary to helping humans understand life under the sea better. She also did a great job explaining what a robot like ABE accomplishes.
    Although she explained what it does, giving specific examples would have been very helpful in this review. Also she could have included what researchers have control over this robot and where they are located.
    This was overall an excellent review and before reading it I had not been aware of the existence of something like ABE much less its importance.

  5. I found Ally’s review on “ABE, Pioneering Robotic Undersea Explorer, Is Dead at 16.” extremely intriguing. She made me very interested in finding out more about the robot that I had know idea existed. She presented several things well in her review, as well. The first thing she presented well was her in depth detail on the robot, what is was capable of and what it had been doing. The second thing she presented well was how she discussed how the robot has impact life on the Earth today and how this will be a basis for new ideas in the future. A third thing that Ally presented well was how she shared her take on the story and what she thinks might happen in the future of science.
    Although Ally’s article was written brilliantly, I found that she made a couple of errors in her review of the article. For one, I would have liked to have learned more about the robot’s other great expeditions. She also could have summarized a time line of the robot’s like. She also did not talk about what the robot is made of and capable of. Her article would have been more interesting if she had discussed the make-up and abilities of the robot.
    After reading Ally’s article, I found several things very interesting about what she discusses on the topic of the underwater robot. One thing that I found most interesting was the information shared about the mid-ocean ridges and reaching depths of 10,000 feet. When I go swimming, if I go to the bottom of the pool, my entire body feels a lot of pressure. I cannot begin to imagine how much pressure the robot feels at those kind of depths and am very interesting in learning how it is able to survive. I feel sad that the robot has died, but am very interesting in learning about what it was able to accomplish in its lifetime.
