New Planet Found; May Be Cosmic Rosetta Stone

Than, Ker. "New Planet Found; May Be Cosmic Rosetta Stone." National Geographic. N.p., 17 Mar. 2010. Web. 17 Mar. 2010. .

The article “New Planet Found; May Be Cosmic Rosetta Stone” is about the discovery of a new exoplanet (a planet outside of our solar system). The planet is called Corot-9b and is located in the constellation Serpens. Corot-9b is a gas-giant, like Jupiter or Saturn, and is in a circular orbit around its star. The planet passes in front of its star as seen from Earth during its orbit, allowing scientists to study the planet’s atmosphere and size. The size of the planet can be found by seeing the amount of light from the star that is completely blocked out by the planet and the components of the atmosphere can be found by studying the light that passed through the atmosphere and was not completely blocked out. Scientists think that most exoplanets in the galaxy will resemble Corot-9b – temperate gas giants with circular orbits. Because not many exoplanets orbit in front of their star, which makes it impossible to study them, Corot-9b allows scientists to research exoplanets in greater detail.

Finding Corot-9b will allow planets outside of our solar system to be further researched. This could lead to advances in many fields in astronomy, and help humanity to explore and inhabit the galaxy. With more knowledge on exoplanets, humanity could eventually find a habitable earth-like planet in our galaxy, and if worse comes to worst, people could find refuge on another planet.

I liked this article very much, especially the way it was written. The author explained how the planets were studied and what scientists did with the information. I also liked the simplicity of the article.

  1. i liked this article alot because he explains accuratlety and show the comparisons of the exoplanet to the planets in out solar system. he also explaioned how we someday might find another inhabitable planted like earth very well. Finally he explained that our scientists are capable of finding out the atomosphere and size of the planet.

he could have explained more on how we found this planet and maybe what the size was if they had calculated it. he also could have found out how far away this planet was.

i found tjhis article very interesting and somthing new i had learned from it is the fact that we can calculate the size and stuff of lpanets millions of miles away

  2. The review for the article “New Planet Found; May Be Cosmic Rosetta Stone” was very interesting to the fact that new planets are being discovered in other solar systems. The review states well that this new planet is much like the gas giants in our solar system. Also, it states well on how scientists can measure the size of the new planet, which is called Corot-9b, and what makes up the atmosphere. Also, the review explains well on why Corot-9b is so important to us because since it goes right in front of the star, we are able to see it and study it with more detail.
The review could have gone more into detail on how the planet appears from Earth. I wonder what color it is, or how large the planet’s size is. Also, the review could have explained on future projects possible for Corot-9b. I wonder if we are only going to study it on Earth, or will we send satellites to examine it more closely. I am intrigued by the thought of new planets in our galaxy, and also the thought of new places in our galaxy that exist.
Before reading this review, I didn’t know that other planets in other solar systems were this close to Earth. I am shocked that there are so many solar systems near ours, and that other planets can be similar to our own gas giants, like Jupiter and Saturn. I hope that new planets will be discovered, and that we may one day be able to reach those planets by satellite and other means of transportation. This was a very interesting review that made me broaden my horizons about the universe.

  3. One thing that I liked in particular about Aidan's review is that there are actually more planets than we know of outside our solar system. I love how this article gets me thinking about how many other planets there are out there that we don't know about. I also like the fact that scientists are constantly advancing in the areas of space and science. One thing I would tell Aidan to do would be to make the whole concept of this new planet and its qualities a little more clear. Also a little more length to the review would always help. Learning about a new planet never before discovered is definitely something new and very interesting to me.

  4. Aidan's article review was very interesting to read about. I have always personally been intrigued by astronomy. The possibilities of other planets is also greatly fascinating. Also, the ones we know today also provides a good source of insight.

I liked reading this review but the way Aidan described the way that the size of the gas giant gets figured out got me really confused. Also the review wasn't very well organized in general.

However, I really liked this article. Since the universe is constantly expanding, the concept that new planets are constantly being created is pretty much unimaginable.

  5. After reading Aidan’s article, I was extremely intrigued and stupefied. There were three things that he presented extremely well which made his review more interesting to read. The first thing he presented well was how he explained why we can see this gas giant in the constellation Serpens. He discusses how it orbits between us and the star. Another thing Aidan did well was talking about what is so important about seeing the planet in front of the sun. Aidan tells us that it allows us to analyze the planet’s size and atmosphere. The final thing that I believe he did well was talking about how he felt the article was very interesting which would make someone like myself also want to read this article. I would love to know why he finds it so interesting.
Even though I found Aidan’s review very interesting and well written but there are some areas that need improvement. For one, Aidan needs to go into detail a little more in some of his topics. If I looking to read this article, I would want a little more info in order for me to be sure that I would enjoy reading the article. Another thing that he could of done better was maybe telling us why he felt the article was so interesting and what part he liked so much. Aidan cannot just say that he finds that article interesting and not tell us well.
I liked Aidan’s review a lot for many reasons, one being that I could connect to it. He discusses about planets, solar systems, and distant galaxies which I am also learning about in Earth Science right now. Astronomy has also been one of my favorite subjects since the sixth grade so after reading this article, I took a lot of interest in the things that Aidan discussed on the newly found planet.

  6. Aidan’s review of “New Planet Found; May Be Cosmic Rosetta Stone” was very interesting. I liked how he explained how scientists are learning about Corot-9b. I also liked how explained the Rosetta Stone reference in the title. I also liked how his summary was very concise.
I wish Aidan had gone into more detail about Corot 9-b. How did they find it? Can we see it? Etc. Also, I want to know how far away it is.
All in all, I found this to be very interesting and it makes you think about life after Earth.

  7. I found it intriguing that this new planet has been found. The article “New Planet Found; May Be Cosmic Rosetta Stone” explains how this planet was found in another solar system which is quite interesting. I liked that he said that this discovery will help us figure out what other planets in that galaxy are like. The review explained how scientists can measure the size of the new planet. He explained how we can see it more precisely as it passes other stars, but this could have been explained in greater detail. He also says that the finding of this planet allows other planets outside our solar system to be researched in greater detail, but does not explain how this can be done. I enjoyed reading his review because I was interested in how planets other solar systems can be seen so clearly from earth. I didn’t know that exoplanets orbited in front of their stars. In all the review gave me a better understanding about other galaxies.

  8. This review: "New Planet Found; May Be Cosmic Rosetta Stone," showed how we're discovering new things in our universe everyday, which is highly interesting. It's cool too know that this discovery will help us learn lots more about space and the solar system. Another thing that this review did well was go into detail about the charecteristics of this planet.
I wish that Aidan went into a little more detail about the appearence of the planet, such as size and color etc. Also the review was not very organized, it was a little all over the place, i believe he could have organized the details a little better.
All and all i believe that this article, shows ordinary people the amazing discoveries scientists make everyday, and the possibilities there are for the future life-changing discoverys. It was very interesting to read about Carot-9b, a new addition to our universe.
