Panel’s Warning on Climate Risk: Worst is Yet to Come

Gillis, Justin. “Panel’s Warning on Climate Risk: Worst is Yet to Come.” The New York Times. The New York Times, 24 Mar. 2014. Web. 01 Apr. 2014.
The article, Panel’s Warning on Climate Risk: Worst Is Yet to Come by Justin Gillis discusses the growing issue of global warming. The intergovernmental Panel on climate change has reported that “Ice caps are melting, sea ice in the arctic is collapsing, water supplies are coming under stress, heat waves and heavy rains are intensifying, and fish are going extinct (paragraph 2).” This issue has been widely discussed before, but experts have concluded that all evidence found proves that global warming is worsening. Carbon dioxide given off by cars and power plants are the main contributors. Little is being done to solve this problem, although President Obama has recently been “trying to use his executive power under the Clean Air Act and other laws to impose significant new limits on the country’s greenhouse emissions (paragraph 16). “

This article affects all of society drastically. Change in climate is predicted to cause a shortage of food, increase poverty, slow down economic growth, cause diseases in humans and animals, and many other negative side effects. Farmers in hotter climates will not meet the rising demand for food because crops will grow less abundantly. No one can protect themselves from global warming and it will affect everyone if it is not prevented.

This article was well written and interesting. The author included details and facts to convince the reader about the issue. Gillis made the article easy to read and understand while still providing solid information. One thing he could have done to improve the article would be to tell the reader what they could do differently to prevent global warming. Overall the author did a great job on this article and I would recommend it.

  1. There were many parts of this review that I really liked. One thing is that she uses direct quotes from the article in her review to help back up the points she is trying to make. Also, she did a really good job of explaining how the environmental change relates to our lives, and because of that I was really able to connect with the topic. In addition to that, Mason summarized the article in a way that could be easily understood, and she didn't leave out any important details from the article.
There were a couple things that Mason could have improved in her review. One is that she quotes a statement made by the intergovernmental panel, but it would have been nice if she just added a sentence explaining what the intergovernmental panel is or what its purpose is. Also, there were a couple of errors with the quotation marks when Mason was citing a paragraph from the article, but this was pretty minor.
Mason did a really good job with this review, and it taught me many new things. I had already known that climate change is upon us and many people think that it will and is bringing negative effects with it, but I had no idea of the magnitude of the damage that climate change could actually cause. Hopefully people can work together to solve this growing problem.

  2. I think Mason did a really nice job reviewing this article. She did a really nice job of incorporating important quotes from the article that backed up the points she was making nicely. Mason also did a great job of making the review easy for the reader to understand and follow, she incorporated all of the important details. Lastly, Mason did a great job of describing how the issue at hand affects our enviornment and our lives.

One thing I think Mason could have improved on is putting her personal opinion on the subject in her review, it would have been nice to know what she felt about this topic. Another thing mason could have improved on like Will said, just being more careful with using quotation marks when citing a paragraph from the article.

Mason did a great job of informing the reader what was happening. I knew about the climate change issue before reading this, but I had no idea about some of the negative effects that came with it. I enjoyed learning more about the climate change, and I hope that the issue will soon be solved.

  3. Mason did a great job reviewing the article she read. I liked how she added quotes from the article to heighten her points. I also thought Mason did a great job describing and critiquing the article. She gave a great explanation of what she thought of the article. I also thought that Mason summarized the article very well.

I think Mason could have explained her quotes. I also think she could have been more careful with her quotation marks like Grayson and Will said.

Mason's review taught me several new things I did not know before reading it. I enjoyed reading her review and am interested in reading the article.

  4. Mason, there were many aspects of your review that I liked. You used several direct quotes from the article which helped back up your summary. Next, your connection paragraph, when you connect the article to our lives, was on point. You gave details within the paragraph explaining exactly why this will be so costly in the end to all humankind. Finally, you didn't leave out any important points that the article made in your summary. You kept your summary from being superfluous but still incorporated a fantastic amount of details.
Two things you could have improved in your review were explaining the quotes that were in your summary paragraph further and revising a couple grammatical errors. For the quotes part of my critique, you ended the first paragraph of your review with a quote. It is beneficial to the reader if you can elaborate on that quote. Otherwise, it leaves the reader "hanging". In terms of grammatical errors, just make sure you proofread your review afterwards. It is a minor thing, but I did see a couple commas you missed and quotation symbols that were improperly placed.
Mason, reading your review of this article made me think about climate change once again. I knew about the issues we faced with the environment before reading your review, but your review reminded me of the massive uphill climb we face, and how, the longer we wait, the harder it will be to overcome. Global warming has escaped a lot of people's minds as the ongoing problems with Russia continue and as we continue the search for the missing airplane. Your review was special to me because it truly made me rethink about our country's priorities. Is it really necessary to mess around with Russia right now when a much bigger problem exists?
