Printed Body Parts That Work?

Printing documents from a computer is normal in the life of a basic human being living in the United States. People would print out diagrams, tables, and other works. But no one suspected that a person could not only print out figures onto paper but to recreate the image in a 3D model. The idea of 3D printing has been expanding for months now, upgrading materials, designs, and efficiency. A person with access to one of these amazing machines has the ability to “Print” anything, whether it be machine parts or decorations. But who would have thought it to be possible to print out basic replacement body parts? That’s right. It actually is real now. The article I read was “Bone Replacements and Heart Monitors Spur Health Revolution in Open Source 3D Printing” by Joshua M Pearce and it gives incredible information about how 3D printing has advanced.

This incredible piece of technology can effect everyone in our lives in the health world. For instance, say that you had some freak accident where you needed to replace a bone, or an artificial heart. With the technology of 3D printing, you can literally print out new pieces for your body, whether it be bone or other body part. The possibilities for medical use are endless for the 3D printer. Apparently, doctors have already seen the potential of this incredible new idea, especially dentists. In the US alone, thousands “have benefited from 3D printing used by dentists.”

As for the article itself, it was great. The author included stunning detail about the true potential of this device and how it will help us in the future. The way he worded his sentences were amazing and made it seem that he had full understanding on what he was talking about. If he were to write another article, I would definitely read it, that is if I remember his name.

  1. Will did a really good job on the article. The news has told a lot about these 3d printers especially in the process of making weapons which has given this technology a bad reputation so it was good to hear a quality use, in the form of prosthetic body parts, for this technology. It is an incredible innovation and it seems like there is a lot of untapped potential in this invention.
I think the initial summary could have used a bit more information on the use of 3D printing especially in the medical field. It also could have talked about things that have already been done in the medical field with 3D printing besides dentists.
I thought this topic was very interesting and relevant. These printers are intriguing and there is a lot that could be done with them.

  2. This was a really good review by Will and there many things that I liked about it. For example, I like how Will used a quote in his second paragraph from the article itself. This is good because it helps to validate what he is stating. Also, I think that Will did a really nice job of picking a topic that is both important and relevant not only to our lives, but everyone’s lives around the world. In addition to that, I like how Will goes into great detail about what 3D printing actually is. Before reading this review I only had a vague idea of what it was. However, Will used example and many details to help paint a clearer picture in my head.
There were a couple of things which could be fixed in this review. One is that Will really only talks about 3D printing in the area of medicine in his opening paragraph, and he could have talked about other fields where it is used. Furthermore, Will says that body part 3D printing is real now, and that’s it. I just think it may have been a bit better if Will gave a specific example of someone benefiting from the 3D body part printing.
Overall this was a really interesting, well written, and insightful review by Will. I learned so many new things from reading this, like the fact that a 3D printer is capable of synthesizing a functioning heart! 3D printers seem like a really useful invention that will soon have a monumental impact on the way everyone lives their lives. I can’t wait to see what this magnificent contraption can do next.

  3. I thought Will wrote a really good article review. He did a solid job of informing the reader of three dimensional printing. This gave the reader a good amount of background information, making us able to understand the later parts. I also thought he did a nice job of piecing a quote into the article. Lastly, he did a good job of giving examples of this. This review vas very well-written.

I thought that Will could have improved on a few things. He could have explained how this would work rather than just giving examples. Another thing he could have improved on was giving us more examples of 3d printing so we fully understand how it works.

This was a very good review. I learned a lot about 3d printing and its benefits.

  4. Will did a great job reviewing this article. I like how he explained three-dimensional printing well so that the reader has a better understanding. I also like how he included a quote to prove a fact from the article. Will also did a good job giving details and examples of how this technology would affect our lives.
One thing Will could have done to improve this writing is include other areas other than medical that could benefit from this technology. Also, he could have been more critical of the author and said what could have improved.
This topic is very interesting and relevant in our current lives. I was surprised to hear that a printer could create bones and artificial hearts. Overall Will did a great job reviewing the article.

  5. Will wrote a great review! I enjoyed how he explained what 3D printers are and how the technology is rapidly expanding. I also enjoyed how he made the parallel to a standard printer in the beginning of his review. Lastly, I enjoyed the enthusiasm that he had when he talked about how he enjoyed the article and the writer.
I felt that he could have explained more about how the complex materials that body parts are composed of can be printed by a 3D printer. I would also like to know how the designs of 3D printers have progressed to the point that they are so versatile.
I was very impressed to learn that 3D printers can make something strong enough to be used by dentists. I was even more surprised that body parts other than teeth are not that far off from being possible to produce using 3D printers.

  6. I enjoyed the review that Will wrote. I liked how he chose a topic that was eye-catching to everyone. Also, Will included a quote from the original article, which proves his statement with hardcore evidence. Lastly, he did a good job of connecting a daily routine for most of us (printing out papers for school, etc.) with the 3-D printing that can print out body parts. Will's enthusiasm is what impressed me the most about this review because his voice had the feel of excitement, which caused me to read more.
However, Will could have made this review even stronger, mainly by explaining his points further. This is seen when he tells of printing out body parts, but what is the process of printing them out. Also, he could have explained, if it is mentioned in the original article, what the possible medical uses are for the 3-D printing.
I had never known that 3-D printers existed, and it was amazing to read about its ability. It's incredible to know that real, working hearts can be printed out.

  7. I find William did quite a nice job writing this article, both in explaining and relations. He included a quote from the original article itself in paragraph two which helped his point of the helpfulness even more. He included many good details, like the level of advancement and how it can help dentistry. He also provided simple, quick facts.

On the other hand, even as I stated that he had good facts, it was facts, and facts only, no explanation of how the printing actually works. Again, he doesn’t go in depth too much with his facts themselves.

I really like how cool three-D printing is! It’s a whole new step into science.

  8. I think Will did a great job reviewing the article he read. I like how he included a quote from the article to help support his statement. He also did a great job summarizing the article he read. Not only did he summarize the article well, but he also went into great about what 3-D printing is.

Although Will wrote a great summary, I thought he could have gone into further depth and explained his statements more. I also wish he voiced his opinion about the article more in his review.

Before reading this review, I was unaware that 3-D printing was possible. I found this to be very interesting!
