Giant Lizard Is Discovered in the Philippines

"Giant Lizard Is Discovered in the Philippines." The New York Times - Breaking News, World News & Multimedia. 7 Apr. 2010. Web. 11 Apr. 2010. .

Recently a previously discovered lizard was proved to be its own species. The lizard was originally spotted in 2004 in the Sierra Madre Mountains but was only found to be it’s own new species last year and the study was released Wednesday. Scientists were able to catch an adult and take a DNA sample to find that the lizard was new to science. This lizard is golden spotted and is 6.5 feet long. It feasts on fruits and snails rather than carcasses. It spends most of its time in the treetops and has claws that allow it to reach its favorite fruits. Many of the scientists involved say that it is a rare occurrence as well as that finding this species in unexplored forests in the Philippines could open the possibility to finding some other species there as well.

I feel that this discovery could be important to society because this could open up the possibilities of discovering more new species. These new species could be in the same place as the lizard or many other places. If more new species are discovered that could also broaden the overall field of science and different testing and such that can be done.

This article was overall a good article. It was well written, but it could have been longer and more descriptive than it was. They probably could have described the lizard better and more about it.

  1. The review “Giant Lizard Is Discovered in the Philippines” was an important review to the future of discovering new species. The review presented well the information about this discovery. It reviewed well on the physical properties, as well as its behaviors. Also, the review stated well the lizard’s natural habitat and where it originated from. DNA testing was used to see if the lizard is really a new species, not an abnormal lizard from a preexisting species. The lizard was discovered in 2004, but after many years of observations and tests, scientists have deemed the lizard as a new species, which is an important discovery to mankind and the world.
The review could have gone into more detail on who it was that started to see if the animal is really a new species of lizard. Also, the review could have given some relatives to the lizard and what its ancestors are. Since this is such a strange new animal, it must have evolved from a different species of reptiles that differ from the other reptiles and lizards.
Before reading this review, I didn’t know that even today many new species of animals are being discovered. Also, I didn’t know that it would take such a long time for a new species to be officially accepted. This topic is very important in discovering newer species and relatives of preexisting ones, since species must come from a broader group of animals.

  2. I enjoyed reading Carter’s review of “Giant Lizard is Discovered in the Philippines”. Carter did an excellent job of explaining how the scientists discovered the new species. Also Carter clearly described what the lizard looked like so it made it easy to visualize the actual reptile. He also included what the lizard eats and how they get there food. Finally Carter explained how the discovery of this new species could affect the overall science world.

One part that I think Carter could have improved on is that he could have been more descriptive of the lizard. I thought that Carter could have been more in depth of describing what the scientists did to discover this new species and how they recognized that the lizard was a new species. He also could have explained why the scientists did not tell people of their new species until a few days ago even though the lizard was found many years ago.

After reading Carter’s review I learned that there are still many species being discovered in all parts of the world. I now wonder what other animals or species will be discovered in our life time. I also found it interesting that scientists took that long to make sure that the lizard was a new species. Overall Carter did a great job reviewing the article.

  3. I thought Carter did an excellent job with his article “Giant Lizard is discovered in the Philippines.” Carter did a superb job describing the lizard that was discovered. He also did a good job highlighting details that contribute to the fact that the lizard has been categorized as a new species. I thought it was useful that Carter informed the reader about where this lizard was found, and gave some insight into why it may not have been found earlier, since parts of the Philippine rainforest have yet to be explored.

I thought Carter could have improved upon his review by explaining how scientists discovered this lizard originally. I also think it would have been a nice addition to his summary if he had gone into more detail about how scientists established that this lizard was a new species. While he did state that DNA was taken, I was still very curious about how it was determined that this Lizard was a new species, especially since evidently it took a year to produce these results.

I think that this article is important because we need to stay up to date on scientific discoveries. If a new species of lizard has been discovered in unexplored rainforests in the Philippines, that means that other species of other animals may exist there and in other unexplored areas as well. I think that learning about discoveries such as this one promotes research, which may lead to the discovery of new species.

  4. Carter’s review on the article, Giant Lizard is Discovered in Philippines, was very interesting for me to read and think about. Carter’s review presented several things well, one being the details he put into it. He discussed all the highly important info in grave detail so even a naïve little kid could understand. He discussed where it was first spotted, when it was named its own species, and why it was only published a few days ago. He was also good at describing the incredible lizard, at 6.5 feet long and its golden spotted skin. Carter’s description made me want to go on to the internet and look up a picture of the huge animal. The third thing that I believed Carter presented very well was opinion on the article. I like his criticism and the fact that he was willing to admit that the article needed to be longer and more descriptive.
I thought Carter did a great job in his review of the article, but he could have done a couple things better. First off, I have no idea who the article was written by because he did not mention it in the review or in his bibliography, although there may have been no author, I am not sure and would have loved for Carter to have said something about it. Another thing that I believe Carter should have done was expand a little more on his feeling of the article. If I am actually going to read this article and take interest in it, I would have loved to know more about how Carter though of the article.
One thing that I found extremely interesting about Carter’s review was of the new finding. I don’t often hear of new species being discovered everyday so I am glad that Carter decided to review this article about the amazingly large golden spotted lizard from the Philippines.

  5. I enjoyed reading carter’s review of this article. There were several things that I thought he did well. Te first thing I thought carter did well was that he provided a lot of detail about the appearance of the lizard. If carter did not include description in his article it would have made the article boring and much less enjoyable to read. The second thing that I thought that carter did well was that he said how this new discovery will affect us. Since carter did this he connected the article to us making it even more enjoyable to read. The final thing that I thought carter did well was that he described how the lizard lived and its life style. Since he did this he provided even more description about the lizard.

Although carters article was very well written I though that he could have included detail about how this new species was discovered. If carted did this it would have made the article better since the reader is left wondering how they discovered the lizard was a new species. The second thing that I though carter could have done better would have been to say how the scientists discovered this lizard in 2004. If he provided detail about how the lizard was found it may have made the article sound better.

One thing that I learned from the article is that scientists are still discovering new species. I though that almost all of the species of animals have been discovered already. It is hard to believe how no one saw this lizard until 2004.

  6. Carter’s review of “Giant Lizard is Discovered in the Philippines” was very good. He did an especially good job of providing us with qualitative and quantitative details on the lizard. He also did a good job of showing how the scientists found this information on the new species. He also did a good job of showing what the lizard is like.
He could have expanded on his review, but like he said, the article was short. Also, I would like to know who these scientists are.
All in all, Carter’s review was very informative, interesting, and well written. I was surprised by the fact that new species are still being discovered in this day in age where there are tons of endangered species.

  7. I liked Carter's review on the article "Giant Lizard is found in the Phillipeans". He describe what the new lizard is with great detail, within even getting howit gets its food. Also, he presented how scientists found out that this was a new species of reptile, rather than a normal lizard. Lastly, I liked how he showed where the lizard was found and how odd the chances were of finding it.
I belivie that carter could have gone into more detail on how exactly this new species was discovered. Also, i would want to know from this review how often new species and/or new reptile species are discovered.
I was impressed by that I found out that this new discovery and how this can greatly affect the society and sciences.

  8. Carters review of the lizard discovered which is a new species astounded me yes i knew that we may find new animals around thworld that we had no idea about but this lizard is discribed exxelently in its size and color and how it is an omnivore. he also explained how the scientist involved ahve more theorys on if we keep looking we may find more
what he could have told us mor eabout was if they are going to look for more of its kind and what they are calling this lizard he could have also gave a more descriptive detail of the lizard and anyother things like its behavoir it just might as well attack anythnig it see or think we are food.
the thing that i found very knew is that lizards that are this big or anything still have not been discovered
