“New Hominid Species Discovered in South Africa”

The article that I read about “New Hominid Species Discovered in South Africa” discusses the discovery of a new species that lived over 2 million years ago. Nine year old Matthew Berger stumbled over this great archaeological spot while chasing his dog through high grass. Matthews father an American paleontologist had been searching for hominoid bones just a hill and a half a way. Matthew had discovered a fossil, the ancient remains of a 4 foot 2 inch boy, a little younger then himself. The team then began to search the area and came up with the boys extremely well preserved skull, and four other individuals. Doctor Berger suggests that the new species existed up too 1.95 million years ago, and most likely descended from Australopithecus africanus. The species were described as possible ancestors of the Homo erectus.
This article is important and significant because it gives us further insight on our past and our ancestors. These discoveries could help us learn about what life was like millions of years ago. It also shows how we are making new discoveries each day, and how hard paleontologists work at what they do.
I believe that the article should have explained what a Homo Erectus was, or an Australopithecus africanus, for many people these terms could’ve been difficult to understand. Also it could’ve gone into more detail about the discovery of the fossil and how they new what it was. Overall I enjoyed the article and thought it was highly informative.

  1. I enjoyed reading Caroline's article review. It was highly informative. Also, it was well-written. Lastly, I found it interesting how the fossil was found.

I have to agree with Caroline when she says that some of the terms are difficult to understand. Also, I didn't like the fact that her article review was a little short, length-wise.

Overall, I learned a lot through reading this article review. It helped to better shape my understanding of the hominid species that lived in the past.

  2. I enjoyed reading Caroline’s review of “New Hominid Species Discovered in South Africa”. Caroline did a great job in explaining how the fossils were found. I thought she clearly explained what the paleontologists found and how this may affect us today. I also thought Caroline did an excellent job in describing the Hominid species and how old the species is. Caroline only wrote about the main ideas of the article, making it short and simple. Caroline also described the physical features of the child whose fossils were found. Finally, Caroline made this review very readable so anyone could read the review and understand it.

One part Caroline could have improved on is the information; she did not include a lot of information from the article which made the review not very descriptive. I also thought that she could have explained what a Hominid species is. Thirdly, Caroline could have written more about the paleontologist who was working at the site and not included so much information about how the fossil was found. Also Caroline could have written about why the Hominid species are like humans. Finally, Caroline should have written about what this means for the paleontology world and what other paleontologists are doing to find more information.

After reading Caroline’s review I learned that there is a species called the Hominid species that is like humans. I also learned that major discoveries could be made by kids by accident even though many paleontologists have been looking for the species. This article makes me wonder what other new species paleontologists will find.

  3. I thought Caroline did an excellent job with her article “New Hominid Species Discovered in South Africa.” Caroline did an excellent job simply describing the find for the reader. I thought the story of the discovery of these fossils was very random and interesting, so I enjoyed hearing about it. I think Caroline also did a good job explaining exactly what the find was, so that one who is not very familiar with archeological terms could still understand the find, and interpret its significance.

I thought Caroline’s review could have been improved on if she had included more details about the fossils found. While I did enjoy the story of their discovery, the point of the article was the fossils and I would have liked to know some more about them. I would also like to know how the discovery of this new hominid species fits in to our current theory of evolution, and if it has had any impact on, or changed archeologists’ minds.

I think this article is important because discovering such fossils, and uncovering a new hominid species is an extremely significant archeological breakthrough. Whether or not you are interested in archeology, these fossils can unlock secrets about human evolution, and how we came to be today. Before reading this article, I had no idea that such a significant find had been made, one that could change and impact theories about the history and evolution of man kind.

  4. Caroline did an excellent job with this review. Firstly, she did a particularly great job summarizing the actual article. Her concise format kept the article interesting. Also, well done was how thoroughly she explained how the fossils were found. Moreover, her descriptions in how these findings would help us in the future were spot on. Overall this review was great and interesting.
Although this review was great, Caroline could have improved this by further explaining the roots of these fossils. I feel she let is just a little bit up to the reader’s imagination, which might get confusing. Also, some of the terms used like Hominoid bones or species, could have been better defined.
Before reading this I had no Idea scientific discoveries could be made so simply. It is fascinating that science or scientific discoveries are around everywhere and all the time.

  5. There were several things that I thought that Caroline did well when she reviewed this article. The first thing that I thought that she did well was that she clearly described the impact of these new discoveries to us today. It was helpful that she stated how this new discovery will help us to understand our past. Another thing that I thought that Caroline did well was that she. Another thing that I thought that Caroline did well was that she explained some of the archeological terms so that the reader knows what is going on. Since Caroline did this it made the article much more enjoyable to read and easier to follow. The final thing that I thought that Caroline did well was that she included a lot of detail in her summary of this article. Sine Caroline included detail she gave the reader a better understanding of what was actually happening.

Although Caroline’s article was very interesting there were two things that I thought she could have improved on. The first thing that I thought Caroline could have done better would have been to increase the length of her review. Although the article was descriptive thought that she could have made it slightly longer. The second thing that I thought that Caroline could have done better would have been to state what this means for world of archeology. Caroline did a good job describing how ths discovery will affect us but not the archeological world.

I learned a lot from Caroline’s article. I learned that that you could just stumble upon such an important scientific discover. This article showed that it is possible to discover important pieces of science without even trying.

  6. I thought that Caroline’s review of the article “New Hominid Species Discovered in South Africa” was very good. The way that she presented the discovery of the fossil was very interesting. I also liked how she clearly explained the implications of this find. In addition, the review was short and concise yet very informative.
One fact that I didn’t like about the review is that she never stated where the fossil was found. Also, some of the scientific words were not explained.
I was impressed with the fact that a little boy found this inadvertently, while his father was carefully searching, but in the wrong place.

  7. The review “New Hominid Species Discovered in South Africa” was an excellent, interesting review that caught my interest very quickly. The review explains well of the new species of hominids that were discovered in South Africa. The review explained well on how the fossils were found, which were discovered by nine year old Matthew Burger by stumbling upon it. The review also explained well on what the fossil appeared to be and also how old the remains were. Also, this review explains well on how this may relate to our ancestors and were the Homo erectus has descended from.
This review could have explained more was what the remains appeared and looked like. Also, it could have shown how this new species of hominids are similar to humans, such as appearance, lifestyle, and similarities of the body structure of these new creatures.
One thing I did not know before reading this review was that even now, people are finding new relatives to humans that did not survive to this day. Also, this review is important to me because it broadens my horizons on how humans can be related to other species and how humans have descended and evolved into what they are now. This may lead us closer to how human may be related to other species of animals and how life can evolve over time and the path of human evolution.

  8. Caroline’s review of “New Hominid Species Discovered in South Africa” was quite interesting. She explained the process of finding the fossils very descriptively. Her review explained the Hominid species and its age very well. The discoveries of the Paleontologists were quite clear and understandable. Her review was explanatory but not overly detailed. It was not too complex, and could be understood by the average reader.
While the review was explanatory, it did not go into great detail about the topic. It could have used more information. Her explanation of the Hominid species could have been better. Caroline could have explained what this discovery implies to scientist, or what its importance is.
Her review taught me about a new species called the Hominid. It is closely related to humans. It was comical to find out that a kid stumbled upon it while paleontologists could search for years and without finding something so important. It opens doors to the possible discovery of many new species.

  9. I think that Caroline’s review of the article “New Hominid Species Discovered in South Africa” is a very good review. She did a good job of explaining the discovery of the fossil. She also did a good job of explaining this article and what it is about. The review is short, but is very informative and self-explanatory. One thing I didn’t like about her review is that she did not state where the fossil was found. Also, some of the scientific terms were not defined, so it made certain parts hard to understand. One thing that impressed me about this article is that a boy just mistakenly found this when no scientist had found it before.

  10. I think that Caroline did an excellent job reviewing “New Hominid Species Discovered in South Africa.” Caroline did a great job explaining what it was that the paleontologists found. Also she clearly explained how it was that this find came about. The review was concise and easy to understand.
Although this was an excellent review, Caroline could have gone into a little more detail about the history of these fossils. Also, some of the scientific phrases could have been defined which would have been very helpful in understanding this review.
Overall, Caroline did an excellent job reviewing her article, and I found it kind of ironic that a boy could find this huge discovery when paleontologists who make a living on this couldn’t.

I enjoyed reading Caroline’s review of the article “New Hominid Species Discovered in South Africa.”: I liked how she began her review by getting straight to the point and stating the main idea of the article, that a new hominid species that lived 200+ million years ago was found recently. I also like how, after that, she describes the find by telling it like a story, instead of just presenting the facts. This focuses her summary on the discovery of the species rather than the species itself.

However, Caroline left out a lot of important details about the discovery of the species from the main article. For example, she didn’t mention that Matthew actually found bones in 2008, or that Dr. Berger found hidden caves in the area a number of months prior to that. She also leaves out the part about Dr. Berger scared his son by cursing loudly in excitement after he saw the first bones, which, although not necessary to understand the main point of the article, is an entertaining piece of information. Also, Caroline’s review was very short, and it looked like she could further develop her ideas in the second and third paragraph, which seemed rushed.

Since history textbooks and the like often present information as a complete set of facts, it is surprising to see an article like this and discover how little we actually know about things such as the evolution of humans. The article also brings to mind the question of how many more artifacts are out there, waiting to someday be discovered.

  12. I think that Caroline did a very good job with this article. She did a great job of explaining how it was found. She explained what they found and who found it. She also explained where it was found as well. She also could have done some other things to make this better. She could have spoken a little bit more about the history of this land and the fossils. Because I saw a documentary on this I also know the story and I know that she could have added some more detail about how Matthew's father came about looking at this area. All in all I think this was a very good current event article.

  13. One thing that I liked about Caroline's article was that she was able to summarize it all very well. She did a good job making a visual image in my head about what her topic was about. Also the story she told about it was very interesting and caught my attention of how unlikely this was to happen. One thing I think Caroline could have done a little bit better would be to make her review a little longer. Another suggestion would be to make her review sound more interesting by putting enthusiasm in her words. Reading this review has informed a lot though by showing me something that big could be discovered so easily and uncover so much more.

  14. Caroline's article was very well written and explained properly. She explained who found the bone where and how Matthew found it. Also she got into good description on what exactly he found. Lastly, it explained what the paleontologists were able to discover about the bones thoroughly.
ALthough Caroline explained most of the general idea of the findings well, there were a couple parts in which could be improved. I believe she could have gone deeper into the importance of how the findings can affect us today. Also, Caroline did should have mentioned how this affects paleontology and if it affects other paleontologists understandings of the far past.
I learned, from this article, that fossil discoveries of humans are still being searched for and discovered even with all of our great information and understandings of past lives.

  15. Caroline's report on "New Hominid Species Discovered in South Africa" was very good. I appreciated the fact that it was very informative. It was very factual and I feel as if I read the whole article just from reading the review.

The review could be improved if she explained more of the scientific words such as homo erectus and hominid. I also would have liked if she added more details about the fossils. Lastly I would like to know more about the paleontologists and the process they went through while investigating the fossil.

The discovery of this fossil is important because it helps us learn more about the our ancestors. It also helps us learn more about evolution and how we came to be.

  16. I thought that Caroline did a good job on her review of “New Hominid Species Discovered In South Africa.” I though she did a good job describing what was found. She described the discovery of the fossils and the whole story of it well. I also though she did a good job making it simple to understand easy to recognize why it was important.
Caroline could have improved this review by adding more information, especially more details about the fossils. Caroline also could have explained more about the scientific terms.
This article impressed me because this discovery that was made is very important to understanding the ancestors of human beings and it was discovered by a boy.
