Humpback Dolphin Clan Branches Out

Humpback Dolphin Clan Branches Out

Recently, a group of humpback dolphins has been spotted off the Northern coast of Australia. They have been designated as a new species of humpback dolphin. They were an unknown species previously before the spotting. The Wildlife Conservation Society has been trying to prove that there were more than two different types of humpback dolphin and collected “physical and generic” evidence from the different species. They eventually concluded that there were four discrete species of humpback dolphin. The new species have yet to be given names.
For society, this shows us that not just particularly in humpback dolphins, but in all animal species that there may be more distinct species within previously known species. For example, there may be a definitive species of tiger within a species that we do not know about. Thus, this opens up all new possibilities for new discoveries of animals.
I thought this article was well-written because it was straight and to the point, however I believe it could have contained more information on what these new dolphins looked like since there was no name. Overall, I think this was a great article that provided new light on an unknown topic.

  1. In Jack’s review, I really liked how he explained the topic in a short and to-the-point way. He made me understand the topic just by me reading it in a few minutes. I also liked how he used good words and phrases like “for example” and “thus” that helped the review move along nicely. Finally, I like how he connected the discovery of this new dolphin species to the fact that there could be other species of animals that we do not yet know about.
One thing I think that Jack could have worked on was giving more information on how and when the dolphins were discovered and who discovered them. I also think he could have provided more information on how the Wildlife Conservation Society came to the conclusion that there were four discrete species of humpback dolphin.
Something that really impressed me was just the fact that a new species was found. I find this very exciting. It’s interesting that we think we know so much about the world and the environment, when really, humans just know a fraction about it.

  2. I really liked the way Jack presented his article in a short yet well described manner. The way he wrote the summary made me understand very well. He really used transition word effectively and he had each sentence to the point. I also liked the way Jack talked briefly about how there was a new group of species that we don’t know about and make it into something that we should look for in the NY Times or The New York Post.
Although this work was very well presented there were some small errors that would have made it better to understand. He explained a type of Society that was for Wildlife and he just should have talked about it a little more. Also Jack could’ve also included more details in his writing some of his words where somewhat out of order even out of context.
I really like the way he included some works of Biology in this Current event and something that isn’t Chemistry related is also good. I really like the way that Jack presents his work/current events and I can’t wait to read another one of his current event summaries

  3. Jack did a really nice job of making his writing flow. He did this by adding important facts and showing personality throughout his writing. I think it is important how he included facts like where the dolphins have been spotted versus saying, a new species of dolphin have been found and then left it like that. His review is informative and really captures my attention, which makes it an easy read. I also like how he gave examples of different animal species like the tiger.

Even though Jack’s review is great he could improve it. Yes, he has included important facts but he could use some more. Maybe he could include what the Wildlife Conservation Society does and how it affects our society. He also should include the title and the author in his review. Personally, I like to know what I am reading and whom it is by before I get into the details of it.

I am really happy I chose to read this review because it has really broadened my mind as to what type of animals live under the sea. It is so interesting to know that there are so many different species of animals. This new discovery is a good example how we don’t completely know the world we live in.

  4. Jack Flannigan did a great job on his review of the article “Humpback Dolphin Clan Branches Out.” One great aspect of Jack’s review was how it was written so that it got straight to the point on what the article he read was about. Another great aspect of this review was how well the review flowed; this is mainly due to Jack’s use of transition words throughout the review. Because of how well the review flowed I was not bored when reading the Review at all, for as I stated before it got to the point very fast. One last aspect of the article that I enjoyed was how Jack related the topic of the article to society, the way he did it led me to think of how there might be distinct species within a group of species that we already know of. Overall Jack’s review had a lot of great aspects that made reading the review pleasant for me.
Even though Jack wrote a great review there is still room for improvement in his review. One suggestion I have for Jack is to put more detail about the article he read into his summary, which is currently lacking a good amount of detail. Because of this I as a reader did not get such a detailed idea of what the article was about. Another suggestion I have for Jack is to write a longer and more in depth critique of how the article was written. Even though his current critique is adequate, it could definitely be longer.
One aspect of this review that impressed me was how we are still discovering new species of animals on our planet. This is very interesting and makes me wonder what else lurk in the depth of our very expansive oceans.

  5. Jack did an excellent job reviewing this article. One thing I liked was how he discussed the topic right to the point and only included the important information that was needed. Jack also did a good job grabbing the reader’s attention by including the most interesting things talked about in the article. I also liked how smoothly Jack made the writing flow by using good transition words and phrases.
One thing that would have made Jack’s review better would have been if he included just a little more information on the topic. Another thing he could’ve done better would have been if he included the title and author of the article in the review as a reference for the reader.
One thing that impressed me was how a completely new species has been found, and it just reminds us how we think we know a lot about the world we live in, when we still don’t know quite everything.

  6. I think that this article is very interesting, as well as well presented. I thought that he did a very good job of making it to the point and only including relevant information. I thought that he connected this discovery very well to our lives. I thought that it helped by giving another example of how a species could be found within a species to help show what had been discovered. It was showed how this opens up the door to possibilities of other species being discovered. Finally, I liked how Jack gave background information on the topic in the beginning of the article like where as well as what information had existed before the discovery. I thought it was helpful to know that this species was unheard of before the discovery. I thought that this review was a little too brief and that more information would be need to make a more substantial review. I think that the discovery itself could have been expanded on. It would have been interesting to know who the discovery was made by as well as how the discovery was made and what evidence they had for it. I also thought that there could have been more information about the different humpback Dolphin species, and what differentiates the two, and why they are now two different species. Overall I found this article to be informative, and highlight a topic that is unique. I found it very interesting how it took this long to discover these species, especially since there are four new species!! I also found it interesting that they have yet to name the species. i look forward to hearing the new names of these dolphin species.

  7. Jack did a good job in explaining how the new whale species discovery is important to us. The new discovery shows us that there can be many species within species, and some we didn’t discover yet. Jack also a good job in providing an example of another animal besides whales that can be broken down into species. I thought that naming the area where this species was discovered was useful, which was Northern coast of Australia, because this was we can assume where these new species can be found, when researchers need them. Jack could have listed more examples of animals that contain species that were not yet discovered. He could have also listed more information about the new whale species, like how is it different from the others, that would have made his review better. Overall, I find it great that scientists are finding new groups of species because we can understand and distinguish certain whales from each other better.

  8. I think that Jack did a good job in explaining this article, and I found it interesting. One thing that I liked about his review is that I liked the way he used only relevant information in this article, it was very straight to the point. Another thing I liked about his review what that he did a good job in providing examples of other animals, which made us know more about the topic. One last thing I liked about his review was that it flowed. He used good transition words, and the words that he used were words that everyone knew, so no one would feel confused, or not understand what was going on.

Even though Jack did a good job, I think that there are two ways Jack could have improved his review. One thing that he could improve on is that he could add more detail in his work. The review does not give a detailed review to the reader, so the reader may not know exactly what happens, and may just know the vague overall point. Another thing is that he could describe the differences between the two types of dolphins, so that it could educate the reader.

Overall, I think that this article was different, and not something you would see everyday. Before reading this I did not know about these new discoveries, and I found it really interesting how they still have to name this species, and what are the reasons, and ways they used to determine these names.

  9. Jack did a great job of keeping his review short and simple. He kept the reader interested by using only necessary information. I also liked that he included how the discovery of a new species opens up new possibilities for the discovery of even more species. Jack could have given more information about the dolphins and the differences that classified them as different species. He also could have discussed why this discovery is important and how it affects our lives. One thing that was interesting was how even now there are so many different species to be discovered in the world.

  10. Jack's connection to possibilities of other unknown species of different animals on the planet is a strong thought and clearly relates to the point of the article's effect on society. He chose an article that appears to be published recently (November 4), which allows us to gain knowledge on what is now taking place worldwide and how science is progressing closest to the present. Jack's source is well chosen--New York Times is a well-known and successful news company that provides us with corroborated information from scholars and live coverage of current events. However, Jack probably could have chosen a more detailed article, for his summary contained little and vague content. I also think the topic of choice could have been more significant, not that this new finding of a dolphin species is not interesting, just that its overall impact on science is weak since nothing actually happened. Even though it could set a precedent on future investigations of creatures, there does not seem to be that drastic of an alteration in the field of biology as a result. It is impressive that humans are able to confirm a new species of dolphins by evidence of a mere spotting; no further required search of close examination or comparisons to other species were necessary to reaffirm.

  11. I think Jack did an excellent job in just staying to the information needed to express his article to the readers of his review. I think jack also did a great job in making the goal of his article very obvious to the reader as to keep from confusing the reader. Stating the goal of the article very clearly early on is very helpful to the reader because it tells him the point of the article and what to look for. I also really enjoyed how jack tied his article to real life and gave a good explanation to why it’s important for us to know about the newly discovered breed of dolphins.
One thing that jack could have done to make his review better is add more details about the new species of dolphins. For example, what actually classifies them as a different species? Another thing I would have liked to know from Jack’s review is how this new species was discovered and why they hadn’t been discovered before.
I find it fascinating that we’re just finding out more about dolphins now after we thought we knew so much about them before. It amazes me how even though we think that we know so much, we’re always finding out more about our environment and the other animals that inhabit it.
