Experts Say Poaching Could Soon Lead to a Decline in the Rhino Population

Lucero, Louis. "Experts Say Poaching Could Soon Lead to a Decline in the Rhino Population." Experts Say Poaching Could Soon Lead to a Decline in the Rhino Population. N.p., 22 Nov. 2013. Web. 25 Nov. 2013. <http://www.nytimes.com/2013/11/23/science/experts-say-poaching-could-soon-lead-to-a-decline-in-the-rhino-population.html?ref=endangeredandextinctspecies>.

The world population of Rhinos is decreasing because of the high rate of poachers. The International Rhino Foundation said that there were around 688 rhinos killed in 2012. Illegal poaching is the only obvious reasoning that is there when it comes to the extinction of rhinos, even though there are several other reasons. Some of those reasons may include, deforestation, the displacement of human settlements and the destruction of the rhino’s habitat. For example, in Zimbabwe, thousands of acres of the rhinos’ natural habitat has been turned into a farmland. Fewer than 30,000 rhinos are left in the five surviving species. Out of those five species, the most at risk is the Sumatran rhino with fewer than 100 rhinos around the world. The white rhinos are the least at risk of extinction.

Rhinos are the largest living land mammals, are they are seen to be as symbols of humans’ impact on the natural world. They have been hunted for centuries, because of their horns, which or worth more than gold as the amount gets bugger, and because their horns also make a traditional Chinese medicine.

I think that the author did a good job in writing this article. He clearly explained the different species of rhinos that are getting extinct. Also, he gave statistics for the amount of rhinos that are left in the world, the specific species, and how many have been killed. I think that the author could have added more detail to his work, and maybe that could have maybe made me understand this topic a bit more. I think that what is happening to the rhinos is terrible, and this should really stop. I hope that we can save the rhinos.

  1. Natascha wrote a well written article. She clearly explained the issue being discussed and states her main argument in a way where you couldn't miss it. Natascha's main point is that rhinos are extinct and her main argument is that although there multiple other reasons why rhinos are in fact extinct, the key reason why they are extinct is due to illegal poaching. I like how Natascha supported her argument by giving a lot of examples to back it up. I also like how she gave us a specific example as too where this very problem is happening. I also really like how Natascha stuck to the point she was trying to make and smoothly transitioned from sentence to sentence. She also had a good explanation as too why they are being hunted.
I really wish Natascha included the definition of poaching. Although I know that poaching mean the taking of an animal, like killing, others reading this article may not know what it means. Another thing I wish Natascha did is elaborate on her personal opinion of rhino poaching.
I really liked Natascha's article and I am glad to know that there is poaching of rhinos going on. That is something I did not know and I am glad to know that this is a problem and hopefully there are many actions taking place to stop it.

  2. I believe Natascha did a great job reviewing the article “Experts Say Poaching Could Soon Lead to a Decline in the Rhino Population," by Louis Lucero. One great aspect of this article was how the summary of the article was very straight forward; this allowed me to get a pretty good idea of the issue the article spoke of. Another great aspect of the review of the article was the critique that Natascha wrote for the article. In her critique she goes into depth describing the faults and achievements of the paper that she reviewed. A third aspect of the review that I believe was done well was how Natascha managed to put a great amount of essential details in her summary. This allowed me to learn the main points of the article instead of having to read the article, and later deduce what parts of the paper were important and which were not. Natascha also managed to write a very smooth summary that made the review interesting and not long and boring.
Even though Natascha wrote a very good review I still believe there is room for improvement. One suggestion I have for Natascha, is to write more of how the issue of the article relates to her and humans in general. I did not see much of this throughout her entire review of the article. Another suggestion I have is to add more about each of the five species of rhinos that are going extinct. This would have been nice for the reader to learn more about these different types of rhinos.
Something that impressed and I was not aware of before reading this article is how there are fewer than 30,000 rhinos left on Earth. The fact that humans have decreased the number of rhinos to so little, in a way scares me. I hope that these rhinos do not eventually become extinct anytime soon.

  3. I liked that Natascha clearly stated the main point in her review so you couldn’t miss it. I also liked that she gave other reasons for Rhino extinction. Another thing I liked about Natascha’s review was that she gave a detailed critique of the article that gave the reader a thorough understanding of how the article was written. One thing Natascha could have done better was backed up that fact that Rhinos are going extinct because of poaching with more evidence. I think her review would have made more of an impact on the reader if she had done this. It also would have been nice if she had connected this issue to our lives or explained how it is affecting the lives of other people. Overall, Natascha did a great job and brought awareness to a very tragic issue.

  4. Natascha wrote a well-written review that really grabbed my attention. She did a great job in getting straight to the point but still including lots of details. Natascha did a great job in going into depth about what she thought of the article. She included more than one reason why these Rhinos are going extinct and I think that is very important. This is very important because people need to know that there are many factors leading to their extinction.
Even though this review was very well-written there is some room for improvement. She lacked on the area when explaining how these animals extinction affect humanity. I mean, how would an animals that doesn’t affected my life now, affect my life when it is extinct? I wish she could have elaborated on how she felt about these poor Rhinos going extinct.
I am really glad Natascha choose to write about this topic because I would have never heard about it if she hadn’t. From this review I have learned that humans have a huge impact on these animals extinction and it is really sad.
