New Interactive Tool Helps Track Earth’s Forests

Lucero, Louis. "New Interactive Tool Helps Track Earth’s Forests." New York Times. N.p., 14 Nov. 2013. Web. 17 Nov. 2013.

Google created a map device that will detect forest destruction.  This tool will show an area that experienced a disturbance in the forest. Color blocking is used to represent deforestation that happened over a period of time. This idea has been considered many times and now it finally has been put in action. The device uses up a lot of energy, and once when it was used, it dimed the lights in the room, but it is still worth trying.  This devise helped Brazil with deforestation. Once the device located the rainforest that was gradually shrinking, the people helped decrease the disturbance of the forest.

This tool is helpful in decreasing the green house gases formed by burning the forests. When a destruction of a forest is detected on the map, police provide more protection towards that forest. Trees are one of the providers of oxygen for humans and animals, if we can save more trees, then the better it will be for us to live.

This article is well written and it contains enough details to explain what this device does, but it does not contain a lot of examples that show how this device has been helpful to us. The only example it provides the reader with is the deforestation in Brazil.

  1. I liked how the writer tells us how trees are a important aspects in our lives how they are important to us in the future and the present. I like how they appreciate life of trees and the environment even in a different country. The review could have been better if they explained how the map devices gets its information is it from a drone a satellite maybe. Another suggestion would be how much power does this device use and if its energy efficient. I didn't know Google made such a device like this in the first place i might just go and read this article in my spare time.

  2. Maryasa’s topic was well chosen and intriguing since it infused both nature and technology. Her explanation on the justification on how it improves society in the second paragraph is thorough since it exhibits cause and effect elements. This enables the reader to further comprehend the significance of the device. Another aspect I liked was how she reflected on her article since it contained positive and negative feedback.
If someone who was unfamiliar with her article read her summary, however, it may be confusing as it leaves them questioning more about the functions of Google’s new interactive tool. Even though she did a good job given an example in her second paragraph, I think she could have included at least one more effect, such as the impact of the device on the technological world and how it is developing more science related advancements, leaving us with the question: does this device set a precedent for and increase science’s dependency on technology?
It is comforting to know that something has been developed in order to delay deforestation and further aid our planet by reducing greenhouse gases, further protecting Earth’s atmosphere and lengthening its existence.

  3. I think that Maryasa did a good job of explaining this new tool. I think that she explained where the device is being used and for what purpose well - she wrote about how authorities in Brazil are using it to track and prevent deforestation, which I think will be very helpful in the future for more places than just Brazil. I also liked the fact that Maryasa kept the explanation of the tool, its uses, and the use for it in the world very simple and easy to understand. Sometimes people use too much detail which bores the reader, but Maryasa explained it well. Finally, I liked how she was detailed in her critique of the article. It's important to tell the reader of your review how reliable and detailed the source is, and Maryasa explained the weaknesses of the article very well.

Maryasa's article was good, but there were a few things that could have been done better. For instance, she could have explained more on the use of the new Google device. I understand the very general use for it, but she could have explained how people came up with the idea and how it is going to be used specifically in the future. Also, more detail would be helpful in how it's important to us. She could have included specific examples of situations in the US where there was major deforestation, and how it could have been prevented using this device.

Overall, I think that Maryasa did a good job in this review. I perviously hadn't known about this new device, and I am interested to see how it works out in reducing green house gases and hopefully saving forests in the future all around the world.

  4. I think that Maryasa did a wonderful job with this review! She clearly explained what the tool was and how it is helpful to us in everyday life. She wrote about deforestation and how with this tool we can now find out where deforestation is happening and the things that can be done to prevent it. I also liked how Maryasa explained the tool, what it is used for, and how it is helpful. I also like how Maryasa explained what the tool is like, for instance, it can take out a room of lights when being used.
Maryasa had a well written article. I did however feel like she could have elaborated more on the situation and given us more examples on how the tool is used. I also wish that Maryasa explained how this tool was even thought of
Overall, Maryasa had a very well written article and I enjoyed reading it and learning about deforestation. Now I know that there is an action being taken and I never knew that before.
