With Extra Anchovies, Deluxe Whale Watching

Goode, Erica. "With Extra Anchovies, Deluxe Whale Watching." New York Times. N.p., 24 Nov. 2013. Web. 25 Nov. 2013.

In the waters of Monterey Bay there have been miles and miles of anchovies. Thousands of sea lions came to the bay, pelicans flew in, bottle nosed dolphins, and humpback whales. Whale watchers were amazed as they watched about 200 whales breach and blow. These animals are common to this area but none have stayed this long. All the animals together haven't made a dent in the population of anchovies. In one spot there were so many anchovies the oxygen ran out and many died off. The waters have created the "perfect storm" so the anchovies lay there eggs in the warm waters and they develop quickly. Scientists are not sure when these animals will finally migrate, they estimate it could be December.

This event shows scientists that animals, specifically humpback whales, don't migrate only due to weather. These animals have survived longer because they have enough food. This also shows scientists that when there is a surplus of food different species of animals won't attack each other as much. Because there is enough anchovies for all the whales and sea lions didn't interact. Lastly this article proves that any year could be a good year for a species. The past six years have been hard on these animals and this year has been great for them.

This article was well written and had enough interesting info to make the reader want to continue. It was interesting to hear the stories of the whale watchers, I never thought so many whales and dolphins could be in one place at once. However there is not a lot of scientific info so there is not a lot of proof of why it is happening.

  1. I really enjoyed reading Lindsay’s review. One thing that I think she did very well was that she got straight to the point. She didn’t bore the reader or unnecessarily lengthen the review – rather, she gave the information that was needed – nothing more, nothing less. Another thing that I think Lindsay did especially well was her sentence structure. Her sentences were easy to read, but also interesting to read. They were not too short but they were also not run-on sentences. Finally, I think Lindsay did a great job of giving background information to the reader about what this has shown scientists.
One thing that I think Lindsay could have done better was that she could have given more numbers to the reader. For example: how many whales have been spotted? How does this compare to other years? Also, towards the end of the review, Lindsay mentions something about reading the stories that the whale watchers told. I would’ve liked to hear some of those stories.
What really impressed me was how well Lindsay seemed to understand the topic. It didn’t seem like she was spitting out information directly from the article; it seemed as though she really knew what she was talking about! I really enjoyed reading Lindsay’s review and it makes me want to learn more about the topic.

  2. The author of the review did an incredible job setting the scene of where the article takes place and the atmosphere during the event. The event, in which she described well, was that whales do not migrate just because of the weather, the whales survive longer because the have a large food supply. She also got strait to the point, which strengthened her thesis, that animals do not only migrate because of weather conditions, but that they also migrate because of food supply. The author could have made her review better by explaining what information in the article captivated the reader, and the author also could have explained what anchovies had to do with migration. What impressed me the most about the article review was when the author told about the anchovies, and how they hatch in warm water. I found that interesting.

  3. I really enjoyed reading Lindsay’s review, not only do I think it is well written but the topic is very interesting. She did a great job in using details like what type of dolphins and whales. She has an easy flow to her writing making it easy to read, which makes it more enjoyable. Lastly, she did a great job in incorporating background details that made her review that much more interesting.
I believe Lindsay’s review was well done but has room for improvement. I would have liked to see her incorporate the author and title of the article into her writing. She should have given statistics to back up her information. Even though she gave great background information she should have included more. Where is Monterey Bay? I would have liked to been able to find out background information like that.
I was so surprised after reading this article that such a large mammal like the whale could survive on something so small like anchovies. It seemed like Lindsay really cares about the topic and is eager to learn more. She sounds like she really knows what she is talking about. I am happy I chose to read Lindsay’s review because it makes me more aware about what is happening under the sea.

  4. Lindsay had a great review! She explained the article very well, i understood what it was about and what the main point as. She had a good descriptive first paragraph giving a good summary of the article. I also really like the article she chose, it was interesting and something that i think a lot of people would be interested in learning about. And i also really liked what she thought about this article, and her personal views toward the article she picked for this assignment. It was good to see what her feedback was about the article.
I think Lindsay could have put the title and the author in the first sentence and maybe the date of which this article was published so we had an idea of what it was about, who it was by, and how recent the article was. I also think she could have told us more about why she thought there wasn't that much scientific information, but as an overall this review of the article was very good.
This review taught me something new about what is going on in this world. I don't think i would have learnt about this, unless i had read Lindsay's review of the article, so i am glad i picked her review to read, because it's a good part of information to know, and learn about.

  5. Lindsay did a really good job of writing this review. She didn’t waste time boring us with trivial things or telling us what the article lacked. Lindsay also gave some background information to help us understand the topic more. It also seemed like Lindsay liked the article she found and thought that the topic was interesting and that definitely helped her writing.
Though Lindsay did a great job on her review it think she could have made it even better by giving more statistics or facts about the subject/topic. Another thing she could have done better was to be a little clearer. In one of her sentences she referenced an animal and I didn’t know if she was talking about a whale, dolphin, or anchovy.
One thing I did not know before reading this review is that sea lions, pelicans, dolphins and whales eat anchovies. I did not know that so many different things ate anchovies.
