After a Two-Year Trek, NASA's Mars Rover Reaches Its Mountain Lab

In this article, After a Two Year Trek, NASA’s Mars Rover Reaches Its Mountain Lab, by Kenneth Chang, it is described that the Mars rover, Curiosity, has reached its destination (a 3 mile high mountain called Mount Sharp) where it will begin to perform its main scientific experiments. The rover was launched in January of 2012 landed on Mars in August of 2012. Since then, Curiosity has been conducting minor experiments, taking photographs, and has been driving around the dust planet looking for the perfect place to begin its real research. The article stated that the arrival time to the mountain took slightly longer than scientists thought because they did not want to damage any part of the rover. Also, the author mentioned how this project has cost over $2.5 billion so far and in the upcoming year, it will cost around $59.4 million for operations alone. Though Curiosity conducted an experiment suggesting that a huge crater was once some form of lake and it has found rocks that contain high silicone levels, meaning that they have been altered by water, the article seemed to suggest that the focus of the last two years was about driving the rover and not as much about the actual experiments.

The Mars rover project is a huge leap in the discovery of space and science and could further inspire NASA and other space programs to dig deep into new discoveries of our our galaxy. This project could also spark ideas and theories created by future generations who are eager to discover more knowledge. Curiosity is also the beginning of a new era of exploring and observing other planets. This could mean we find some sort of life on Mars or evidence that there was life at one time. It could even mean just collecting more rocks. Unfortunately, I feel that the only thing holding us back from more space research is the price tag that comes along with it.

In my opinion, I think that this article was not very well written. Though it was very easy to understand for anyone who doesn’t know a lot about astronomy and science, it only provided decent information. It is clear that the author knows about the topic he is writing about and that the facts and quotes were carefully researched. However, I do think that this article was missing a great amount of facts and was lacking details about the true mission of Curiosity and what experiments they will be conducting. Usually I am very interested in these sorts of topics but this article just wasnt very intriguing.

  2. I liked how you gave your own opinion about the article, as it made it easy to relate. In addition, you did a good job of stating the facts and your post was nicely organized. Although, you could have given direct quotations, and maybe next time it would have been helpful to explain why rocks with high slicone levels mean they have been altered by water. Lastly, it is a shame that money is the only thing stopping us from making more discoveries. It already is pretty astonishing that we can remotely control something on a planet that is about 225 million km away. Just imagine all we could do with more funds to research the planet of mars. Could we find life, or evidence that it had been there?

One aspect I liked about this review was the summary of what the article was about. I liked this because it gave you a full and clear explanation of what the author was trying to write about. Another thing I liked was how the review flowed smoothly and allowed you to understand what she was trying to say and what the topic was about. The last aspect of the article I liked was how the critique really showed how poor the article was even though from her summary the article seemed nicely written and detailed. One thing I thought could make the article better would be more detail about the rover was doing because we can learn more about what things scientist are finding on mars. Another thing that would make this article better is more information on how this is helping us learn more about space and the plants. This review taught me that there might have been water on mars, which is cool to know because that would be another plant with water.

  4. Your article was very well written and made me want to read on. By beginning with background information and details, I was able to clearly understand what the article was about. Your paragraphs are neatly organized and well constructed. Stating that their could be life on Mars completely drew me in and left me wanting more information on this topic. By expanding on this and including more details on the crater that could have once been a lake, the reader would have been more excited about these findings. What else is out there? Could there be life on mars that we do not know about?!

  5. Overall, I thought this was well written and gave me a brief understanding of Curiosity. Although I would have liked to learn more about the rover and it's missions, the lack of information in the article Hadley chose made it impossible to due so. In the review, she explained things to help the reader understand things they otherwise wouldn’t have. For example, instead of just stating that the rover took longer to reach Mars than scientists expected, she went further and explained why. By doing this, she helped the reader have a better understanding of the logistics of the rover and also showed that she understood the article well. She also did a good job on telling the reader how this effects our future in learning about the solar system. She stated that by having the rover on Mars, it can lead to new discoveries of other planets or maybe even information about life that once existed on Mars! On another note, adding more of her opinions on the topic would have made this review more interesting and relevant for the reader. Besides that and a few typing errors, I think Hadley did a great job of reiterating the information she read from the "After a Two Year Trek, NASA’s Mars Rover Reaches Its Mountain Lab” by Kenneth Chang article. In conclusion, I enjoyed learning about the facts of the Curiosity rover, especially because Hadley and I are learning about the solar system in Earth Science this semester.

  6. This report was based on the article, After a Two Year Trek, NASA’s Mars Rover Reaches Its Mountain Lab, by Kenneth Chang, and it explain the further steps NASA is taking to gather further experiments of the Mars Rover that is now wondered upon Mount Sharp. This report was a clear description on the article itself. The writer did a very good job indicating the clear research that was put on this mission and wrote about the further takes that this device will lead us too. In addition, she stated her opinion on the article itself and how the article was written. The writer did an excellent job writing the report on the article, I think she could have added evidence from the article she did her research on, and could have taken quotes and commented on them. She could have taken quotes form the article. It could be by the author or researchers, scientists, or anyone who has an opinion on this situation. I think she could have also listed some experiments that the Mars Rover was planning on doing once it reaches Mount Sharp. I think topic is very interesting. I find how technology has improved this much at this time period and that they can gather information from this source of technology, like they can do minor experiment when its not even on its destination and take photographs.
