Solar Company And Bronx College Plan a technology Hub
Current events by: Margaux Frohlich
Hu, Winnie. "Solar Company and Bronx College Plan a Technology Hub."The New York             Times. The New York Times, 25 Sept. 2014. Web. 26 Sept. 2014

OnForce Solar has brightened the Budweiser warehouse in Hunts point due to solar energy, and helped homeowners lower their electricity bills. OnForce solar has also designed a solar field near a landfill in Rockland County to bring electricity to towns nearby. Even though OnForce Solar is able to supply electricity to homes and brighten warehouses, it struggles to hire workers for its business. This Fall, the company is partnering with Bronx Community College to form a technology center that would provide companies to expand and become stronger as well as a local company. They plan on hiring people from the Bronx community college because they found it difficult to summon people to come in this area. This hub will be supported through the Cuomo administration known as “Start-Up NY”. This Start-Up NY program aims to make the growth of jobs by creating a tax free business at specific universities or colleges. This new technology network has drawn attention to specific colleges to be viewed upon. Right now, this company’s 100 employees are made up of engineers, project managers, sales associates, and office support staff. Mr. Feit, the starter of the OnForce Solar, said that he asked for information about the Start-Up NY program after viewing the TV advertisement but was not able to find any appropriate campus sites for the OnForce Solar. College officials stated that more than 85 companies have applied to move to the area because they are attracted by the expectation of tax motivation, and an advanced technology collaborative work space at non expensive prices as well as access to students trained into the latest technology. The companies also have people who are majoring in biotechnology, software development, engineering services and digital training programs. This no tax area would be needed to give jobs to students and workers and take part to the college’s mission of helping the town.

This OnForce Solar Company has a huge impact on our society. It not only saves electricity and makes electricity bills lower, but people who are unemployed, and who are at risk of becoming poor, are also able to get jobs. Unemployment is a big issue and this program will help create some jobs. This company will allow college students as well as adults to get jobs and make money. Like stated in this article, this OnForce solar company was struggling to hire workers, since no one wanted to work in the Bronx, so the business couldn’t grow and evolve. They decided that their only way to get people to work with them would be to hire unemployed college students from the Bronx Community College to partner with this industry and make a living. “The program aims to spur job growth by creating tax free business zones at designated colleges and universities.” In the article, Mr. Klein stated, “This program will bring not just new employment but high paying jobs to our borough.” Every company that is able to create jobs for the unemployed are making a big impact on our society today.

After reading this article I understood everything that was being told and what it was written about. I found this article well written and very important to our society today. I thought that it showed how companies try to get young people involved in technology and also they are letting them have a chance to get a job. The author of this article Winnie Hu, had a good use of quotes and statistics on prices and rates so we have  an idea on how big the company is as well as how much money is being spent on their projects. By putting quotes in her article it shows that she not only did research on the topic but also showed people’s view on the topic differently. All of the people seemed to have positive views on the system. I really liked the subject of this topic and I hope that this OnForce Solar company that is being established in the Bronx will be able to give unemployed workers good jobs.

  1. There are many aspects of Margaux's article review that makes it intriguing. Primarily, that it was well-written: informative, clear, and concise. Additionally, Margaux's review also included a great reflection that made me realize how important it is to get young people working, especially in technology, as it is the way of the future. Lastly, she defined key terms such as Start-Up NY which really made the article review more interesting. I learned how this new program (Start-Up NY) is a government program that is helping small businesses gain their footing. To me this is the best way to a strong economy and writing about this was another great quality to Margaux's review. However, Margaux could have included some of the numbers/statistics in the article, as her reflection said that was what made the article easy to comprehend.

  2. I read Margaux's review of "Solar Company And Bronx College Plan a technology Hub" by Hu Winnie. In the review Margaux did a good job of organizing her thoughts. Margaux made three paragraphs about the article and I knew which paragraph discussed what because she kept her thoughts in a good order. Secondly, Margaux did a good job of making the review clear. She wrote in a way that I could understand the sentence and get her opinion. Also, she did a great job of incorporating quotes throughout the text. The quotes helped me to understand the actual article.
In the review Margaux could have wrote more about what the benefits of the OnForce company had on the community. For Example, she could have said that the Bronx now has a more stable cheap energy supply and other facts. Another improvement she could have made is adding some of the facts and statistics from the article. This would help people to wrap their head around ideas.
After reading the review I think that it is great that such a wonderful technology is being used to benefit a community in so many ways.

  3. After reading the current events response by Margaux Frolich, I have a few thoughts about some things that were good and other things that needed work in her response. One thing in her response that was very good was Margaux used quotes. Which helps the reader understand what the point you are trying to make. I also liked the way Margaux really knew what she was talking about in her writing. There is good details and quotes that support her writing and makes it very interesting. Lastly, I really enjoyed the topic Margaux wrote about. Because Margaux added quotes and because she wrote her writing very well as if she really knew what she was talking about, it made her topic very interesting and engaging.

In Margaux's current events, I thought a couple of things could have been better. I believe that Margaux could have added more quotes to her writing to help the reader understand more about what your talking about. Also, I think that Margaux could have wrote explanations after her quotes. She stated a quote and then moved on. I think adding a explanation which summarizes the quote, could really support her quotes and make her writing flow a little better.

After reading Margaux Frolich's current events, one thing that really impressed me was the way she wrote her response. She added the perfect amount of information. If she adds to much, then she might loose the reader but if she doesn't have enough, then the reader wont understand what your writing about and Margaux did a very good job of staying away from this. I really enjoyed reading Margaux Frolich's current event.

  4. Margaux's review of "Solar Company And Bronx College Plan a Technology Hub" by Hu Winnie was an enjoyable read. Margaux did an exemplary job of organizing her ideas which allowed her sentences to "flow" nicely together. Margaux also utilized many quotes from the text that helped reinforce her points with proof directly from the article. And lastly, Margaux's great ability in this article to present to the reader all the confusing points an numbers in a more understandable way that made understanding the article much easier.

Margaux only had a small number of errors that could have been changed to make the article seem a little more professional. For example, Margaux never told the reader where the quotes originated from(Which article and the author). This issue is not to big in this specific response, but when more complicated reports with multiple articles forget to explain where the quotes came from it becomes very difficult to find where the quotes came from, making it hard on the reader. Another very small issue is that Margaux could have done a stronger job explaining the quotes and how they relate to the main idea of the article. The quotes are sometimes placed in a paragraph without a good one or two sentence explanation of the quote. If Margaux perfected her quotes in the article then it would be even more impressive.

After reviewing the article, one thing that I found really impressed me is the total impact of the tiny organization as seen in Margaux's report. Only 100 people are making such a big difference in their community which is very stunning. I think that Margaux did an excellent job with her current event.

  5. I liked how Margaux incorporated a quote from an expert into her second paragraph to help explain the purpose of the tech hub.
I also liked how she summarized the quote immediately after to help the reader understand.
I liked how she told that there were multiple viewpoints on the topic.

I learned that this tech hub will not only save electricity, as it was intended to do, but will also give college kids jobs in the bronx, a serendipity.
I also learned that students do not have to major in one specific thing to be hired. any technology-related major, like software development, or engineering, will get them hired.

Lastly, I think Margaux could improve the flow of her review could have been better. I understood what she was saying, but it was complicated to reat at times, especially in the first paragraph.

  6. After reading Margaux’s review of Solar and Bronx College Plan a Technology Hub, I was very impressed with these passages. It was very clear that Margaux’s had read this article and had thought deeply about its purpose and meaning. One thing that I especially liked about this current event was the amount of details that Margaux provided. I was able to understand what the article was all about and I felt that she wasn’t vague, but didn’t list out straight facts either. Another thing that I really liked about this current event was the reflection on why this article was important, that Margaux wrote. It allowed me to further understand her thoughts on the article’s importance and think for myself about why it is important. The final thing that I enjoyed in Margaux’s current event was the way it was organized. Margaux broke the review down into three paragraphs, which made it easier to comprehend what each paragraph was about. I think that this format is helpful when reading a review like this because it allows the reader to not have to read one giant paragraph. Great job!

I thought that though Margaux did a fantastic job of writing this current event, there were a few things that could’ve been better. One of these things was grammar. While reading this article, I found a few grammar mistakes such as capitalization and punctuation. For example, Margaux started out by spelling OnForce Solar with a capital s for solar and then the next sentence there was a lowercase s. I would just make sure to read over and edit the current event next time. I also think that Margaux could’ve added more examples of quotes that the author used in this article. In her final paragraph, she stated how the author made points by including points. Without Margaux included one or two of these quotes in her review, it made it difficult to visualize how the quotes helped the article.

I was highly impressed with the article in general in the sense that it showed how a small group of people makes a huge difference. Margaux did a great job of showing this in her second paragraph where she noted that OnForce Solar Company “hires unemployed college students from the Bronx Community College to partner with this industry and make a living.” I think this is a great thing because it gives students who may not be as privileged to have opportunities in their community.
