in New York City tests positive for Ebola" by Marc Santora
The article I read for my current event was about how doctor
Craig Spencer was diagnosed with Ebola. This was the first case reported in New
York. Dr Spencer was in guinea helping patients with Ebola October 14. He began
to show cases of Ebola and was rushed to Bellevue hospital and into isolation. Symptoms
begin to show 8-10 days after the infection is in your body. That’s how long its
been from his return from Africa. They have disease detectives looking for the
people who came in contact with him in the last few days and could be diagnosed
with Ebola. Ebola does not spread till the person begins to have symptoms,
which is why it is crucial to put a person in isolation.
This article is important to be shared because now people know
how Ebola has spread even more and are lives are at a higher risk now. This affects
my life because now a person with Ebola is only about 20 minutes away. Without this
article we would not have know how Ebola is spreading so quickly.
This article had a lot of good detail on who the man with Ebola
was and how he might have got the disease. The article did not have very good detail
though on what the main symptoms are of this disease. Also some of sentences
were difficult to understand so some parts of the article were hard to comprehend.
Another thing that could be improved is explaining more on what else they have done
to keep doctor Spencer better and isolated.
Three aspects of the review that I liked particularly well were that she gave a really good reason for picking the article. She gave good detail about the Doctor going to Guinea and now showing symptoms 8-10 days later. She also said why this is an important article for people to read, especially people living in or close to New York City.
ReplyDeleteThe review could have been better if she provided more details about the doctor’s contact with other people and what is happening to them. She also should have added that health care workers at Bellvue Hospital where the doctor is being treated said the doctor was very sick when he arrived and they do not know why he didn’t go to the hospital earlier since he had been in Africa and knew the risk of possibly having Ebola.
The one thing I found very impressive about the article is that Mr. Duncan died in Texas earlier this month from Ebola and already hundreds of people are being quarantined.

I chose to comment on Olivia Scotti’s review of the article “Patient in New York Tests Positive for Ebola.” Olivia’s response was on a very interesting and frightening topic, and like any piece of writing, there were some good things and some bad things. One thing about Olivia’s review that I really liked was the fact that she gave some background information on the Ebola virus, as opposed to just telling the story of a man who had Ebola. This made it easier to understand the review, and people who do not know a lot about Ebola would benefit greatly from this. I also liked how Olivia related the article that she had read to her own life. Because I live in the same town as Olivia, this gives the review a personal feel which is endearing. Lastly, I thought that Olivia did a good job of not over explaining the article that she had read. She kept her review concise which is preferable to a thirty page essay in which a writer repeats himself twenty times. Although I did like these things about Olivia’s review, there were a couple things that I felt could have been improved. First of all, I believe that Olivia could have improved her grammar because there were a few instances where she did not have the right word, or was missing punctuation. This made the review a little difficult to understand. In addition, at the end of her review, Olivia states that some of the sentences in the article that she read were hard to understand. However, she did not explain why, and had she done this, it would help readers better understand her experience with the current events article. Finally, one thing about Olivia’s response that really stood out to me was the fact that someone so close to me has an extremely deadly disease. This poses a direct threat to me, and therefore, naturally, this piece of information stood out to me. On the whole, Olivia wrote a very good review, and she enlightened me on an interesting topic.
ReplyDeleteI commented on an article review of "Patient in New York Tests Positive for Ebola" by Olivia Scotti. This is a topic that affects all of us, so I was intrigued to see what she wrote. Olivia summarized the article very well. She included specific details like how Ebola only spreads after symptoms are shown. I liked how she put into simpler terms how far away the doctor is without over-explaining anything.

Olivia also should add definitions of some words. Like "disease detective" or where "guinea" is to help the reader better understand.
I learned that hospitals are equipped to put people in isolation if they have a very contagious disease. This makes me feel more comfortable about the Ebola outbreak.
Olivia’s review of “Patient in New York City Tests Positive for Ebola” talks about Dr. Craig Spencer being diagnosed with Ebola after returning home a trip to Guinea. In this review, she did a good job of briefly summarizing the article. I was able to learn the main idea of the article in a short amount of sentences. Another good thing Olivia did was developing a thought out critique. She had great suggestions that she feels would have improved the article. One last thing she did a good job on was providing reasoning as to why this topic is important. She states that the deadly disease is starting to spread and now someone with the disease is only 20 minutes away from her and me. Although Olivia did do some things well when writing this review, it could’ve been improved. She had a few punctation and capitalization errors, mainly in the first paragraph. Also, adding her personal opinion would have made the review more interesting and relatable. Though there were ups and downs to this review, I did learn an important piece of information about Ebola. I learned that it takes 8-10 days for symptoms to show, which is surprising because it is a very dangerous disease. This concerns me because many people may think they haven’t contracted the disease after coming in close contact with someone diagnosed with Ebola, which would keep spreading the disease.

Something I liked that Olivia did was add dates, so there was a sense of time in the article. Another thing Olivia did well was describe what Ebola is, for someone who may not know what Ebola is when reading this. Also, I thought it was informational how Olivia said how he got Ebola,not just stating that he had it.
ReplyDeleteSomething Olivia could have done differently was add the title of the article in the beginning. Also, some of the lines she wrote could’ve been reworded. For example, instead of “Dr Spencer was in guinea helping patients with Ebola October 14,” it would make more sense to say “On October 14, Dr Spencer was in guinea helping patients with Ebola.”
From Olivia’s review of this article, I learned more about one of the few people in America with this deadly disease. I have only heard of him as “the guy in New York with Ebola,” so it is nice to hear a back story with details.
There were many things that I thought Olivia did well in her current events write-up. First, I thought Olivia picked an article on a topic that is of high interest right now to New Yorkers. I think there are five airports in the United States that allow people to travel into this country from the countries that currently have a large number of people infected with Ebola, and one of them is in New York and another one is in Newark, which is very close to New York. Therefore, New Yorkers have been very concerned that a case of Ebola would be diagnosed in New York. Olivia also did a good job of giving the background of Dr. Spencer’s case such as explaining where he had traveled, when he was diagnosed after he was back in New York, and that the CDC has taken steps to track his activities before he was diagnosed with Ebola to find other people who may have been exposed to the disease. Olivia also did a great job of explaining why this topic is so important to New Yorkers. She made a powerful statement and really made me think when she said that a person who has been diagnosed with Ebola is only about 20 minutes away from where we live.
ReplyDeleteAlthough Olivia did a good job on her review, she could have improved on a few things. She said that symptoms begin to show 8-10 days after the Ebola infection is in your body, but I keep hearing on the news that people who have been exposed to Ebola are being put in a 21 day quarantine period (like Dr. Spencer’s fiancé). I would have been interested to know why the quarantine period is so much longer than the 8-10 days that Olivia talked about. Also, she had a few typos in her review, so I think she could have improved her write-up by correcting them.
Overall, I think Olivia did a great job. I agree with her that I would want to know more about what treatment Dr. Spencer is receiving. The hospitals in the United States have done a great job treating the Ebola patients so far because only one man has died while a few other people have gotten well. Maybe one of the reasons the people who have been treated in the United States have recovered is because they were diagnosed early so they could begin taking medicine to help fight the disease before it got bad. I would also be very interested to know what new medicines are being worked on right now by scientists that could potentially cure Ebola. It would be the greatest solution if scientists came up with a medicine that was really effective, and this medicine could be sent to Africa to help the people who are sick with the disease there.
