With Persistence and Phone Calls, Defending Against Ebola in New York

The article I read With Persistence and Phone Calls, Defending Against Ebola in New York, by Anemona Hartocollis, talked about the methods involved in tracking down patients who enter the United States   that may develop Ebola.  These people may develop Ebola because they have come to the United States from a country that has Ebola or they have been in direct contact with someone who has been diagnosed with Ebola in this country or another country.  These disease detectives work in a call center in New York City.  They contact the patients on the phone every day for 21 days checking their temperature.  If their temperature goes above 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or 37.8 degrees Celsius the patient goes into quarantine.  “Operators speak French and at least five dialects of West African languages like Mandingo and Pulaar”.  I found this interesting because it shows how many groups of people have found a way to get to America.

This article is important to all Americans because if we did not have these disease detectives we would probably have had more than just two Ebola patients in New York State.  The reason I chose this article was because I wanted to know how many more people are being watched for Ebola in New York.  The number that came up shocked me.  It is only around 300.  That number seems high to me.  This shows how cautious New York is.  I hope the rest of the world is as cautious so there will be fewer Ebola outbreaks.

I thought this article was well written and gives very clear facts about how the call center works.  This article could be improved if they gave the dates of when they started making the calls.

  1. After reading the current events response by Drew Judkins, I have a few thoughts about some things that were good and other things that needed work in his response. One thing he did well was she used quotes. Having the quotes in his response not only tells us how the reader feels, it tells us how the author feels and what their reaction was. Also another thing Drew did well was he told the story of the article very well before saying what he thinks about the article. He gave a really interesting and well-written summary. Lastly, Drew gave a very good reason of why he decided to write his response on this article. I completely agree with him.

In Drew’s current events, I thought a couple of things could have been better. For example, I think he could have written more information after he stated a quote. If he does this, it provides a better understanding for the reader of the response.
Also, another thing he could have of done better was writing a better critique for the writer of the article. Provide more thoughts about what you thought, good or bad. Providing your opinion to the writer can help the writer realize what they did wrong and they can make sure they don’t do it again.

One thing in Drew's article that interested me was how many people are being watched for Ebola. Like in Drew’s opinion, it surprised me. Overall, I thought Drew’s response to his article was very interesting and well written.

This review written by Drew was a very interesting current problem that is facing us today. He starts of the review very well by giving good background information about his topic, this provided me a better understanding of what I was about to read. I think that this was a very good article choice since Ebola is a large spreading disease and people’s worries about it is only increasing. I also like the quote given even though it jumps a little bit of the argument. I liked it because it is a very interesting “fun fact” and made the review more enjoyable to read.
This review could have been better if the transition between his sentences. The lack of this made the review a little bit confusing and harder to read. Another thing Drew could improve is to introduce or further explain his quotes so that they don’t through you off the topic.
I found it very interesting that the operators could speak so many languages and like drew said it gives a true insight on how many different people that can enter the US. Overall this was an interesting article.

  3. Drew did a good job reviewing this article, With Persistence and Phone Calls, Defending Against Ebola in New York. In this article scientists have been tracking down people that could have caught Ebola. One aspect that Drew did well was background information. He included symptoms that could be a sign of Ebola. For example, if someone who comes from a different country with a temperature of 100.4 degrees they would go into quarantine. Another aspect that he did well was relate this to our everyday lives. Ebola is really popular at this time. It is very involved and people and are interested in this topic. People are really cautious. A third aspect that Drew did well review the article. He gave tips on what could have been touched upon. Two aspects that Drew could have fixed was getting information from scientists, he could have gathered information from other peoples view. Another thing he could have touched upon was information about the methods involved in tracking patients who came from Africa and came to the US. One thing I found surprising was 300 people are being watched for Ebola and New York is very cautious.

  4. After reading Drew’s review on the article With Persistence and Phone Calls, Defending Against Ebola in New York City I felt that he did a great job summarizing the article. While more details could have been added everything that we needed to know I felt was there. I also felt that his use of specific details also added to the review, such as “If their temperature goes above 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or 37.8 degrees Celsius…”. Finally i liked that drew was analyzing the article and the “disease detectives” as well as the outcome they are having on the United States ebola patient reduction.
Alternatively I felt that the review lacked quotes to back of some statements. There was only one quote in the entire review and i felt this definitely could have been improved. I also felt that there could have been more critiques or more in depth critiquing with specific examples.
After reading the review i was completely surprised by the number of people that were under surveillance by the detectives. 300 people are on an ebola watch list! Im not sure how these people were able to enter the United States but they’re here now and we have be ready if one or more of them contract ebola.
