Fish Just Wanna Have Fun

Griffin Garbarini Current Event #2

The article “Fish Just Wanna Have Fun” we learn revolutionary information about fish and their behavior patterns. Scientist James Murphy is a herpetologist, studies frogs and reptiles, but at home he is a fish lover. He recently acquired a male cichlid from South Africa. When he started to notice strange behavior he sent it to scientist Gordon Burghardt at University of Tennessee. Burghardt studied the fish’s behavior. The fish began to strike the thermometer in the tank. At first he thought the fish was overly aggressive but that was ruled out along with the idea that the fish was trying to mate. They came up with the hypothesis that the fish was playing. Cichlids are known for being aggressive and killing each other. When this fish was introduced to another non aggressive cichlid they began to strike the thermometer together. “It’s an animal we didn’t expect to play” said Burghardt. The fish were playing with eachother! This behavior started scientists to take more of an interest in fish. Now scientists are researching how they can train fish. Crazy idea right?
Up until this information was discovered we thought fish were stupid. As a people we thought fish couldn’t express feelings or euphoria. As a lover of the sea this article was very appealing to me. I SCUBA dive a lot and always thought fish swim without a purpose. Now I realize that they aren't. I can now study how fish play with each other and their behavior patterns. I am going on a marine biology trip this summer and after reading this article I will hopefully be smarter than everyone else!
This article was very easy to comprehend and had vocabulary that got the point across. The vocabulary didn’t interfere with my learning process or understanding. The article was also a perfect length. It didn’t give me so much information that I wanted to stop reading. It also wasn’t so short that I would get points off. The author also sounded interested in the topic based on the tone of the article. This article appeals to any type of reader and is interesting for Marine Biologists.

  1. Griffin did a good job of connecting this article about fish to his own life. Griffin says he is a scuba diver and up until he read this article he thought that whenever he saw fish swimming they were swimming for no reason. But, this article made him realize that fish are actually smart and don't do something if there isn't a reason behind it. A second thing Griffin did well was summarizing the article he read. A third thing Griffin did well was picking a interesting article that made me want to read his review. One thing he could work on is telling us a little more about the study on fish behavior. A second aspect Griffin could work on is his grammar in the article he had a lot of typos and grammatical errors. One thing that was very interesting from this review and article was the fact that fish are actually smart and not as stupid as everyone thinks they are.
