Man’s Death Leads to Discovery of New Virus in Kansas

Ellis, Ralph. "Man's Death Leads to Discovery of New Virus in Kansas, CDC Reports." CNN. Cable News Network, 20 Feb. 2015. Web. 21 Feb. 2015. <http://www.cnn.com/2015/02/20/health/new-virus-discovered/index.html>.

The article that I read, Man’s Death Leads to Discovery of New Virus in Kansas by Ralph Ellis, describes a 50-year-old man’s shocking death after showing similar symptoms to that of lyme disease. The man, who lived in Bourbon County, Kansas, had been bitten by numerous ticks in the spring of 2014. When admitted into the hospital for symptoms including, “fever, tiredness, rash, headache, other body aches, nausea and vomiting” (Ellis para. 6), the doctors tested him for multiple contagious diseases. They all came back negative. The doctors didn’t know what they were dealing with. It seemed as though he had lyme disease, but the medication they gave him did nothing. So the doctors took a blood sample and sent it to the CDC, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, to determine what the man was suffering from. Unfortunately the man died from a heart attack due to organ failure 11 days after being put in the hospital. About 6 months after the man died the CDC was able to confirm that it can potentially be a new virus and have named it after the county the man lived in, Bourbon. They believe that the virus is carried in ticks and possibly other animals. Even though they only have the one case in the United States to base their findings off of, the CDC still advises you to be cautious. The CDC thinks that the Bourbon virus is in the same group as other viruses found in Europe, Asia, and Africa, known as thogotoviruses. This would be the first time that a thogotovirus was found in the United States.
This new discovery of a virus never before seen in the United States is very important to the well-being of Americans. This may be the first breakout of the virus, but it could very easily spread throughout the country through tick bites. Luckily, with the help of the CDC and others, doctors are now able to identify the virus and hopefully get the proper help for the patient. The CDC will keep working on learning about this new virus, how it came to the United States, and how to quickly treat it or prevent it. For now they advise that people should, “protect themselves by tick bites by using insect repellents, wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants, avoiding bushy and wooded areas and checking for ticks after spending time outdoors” (Ellis para. 8).

This CNN article was quite well written but very brief in the things that the author wrote himself. The only thing that I would criticize about this article is that the author summarized the information in a way that seemed hurried. But he was able to get the overall point across. One of the things I thought was a good decision was that he gave many different sources where you could learn more about the Bourbon virus. For example, there was a short video with an interview of a doctor that worked at the hospital where the man was admitted and two links that went into depth about the Bourbon virus. When watching the video and reading some of the things that the CDC explained on their website, I was able to get a better understanding of what the virus really is and what had happened to the man on medical standpoints. Though I didn’t learn much from the actual article, learning about the Bourbon virus was really intriguing.

Sarah’s review on the newly discovered Bourbon virus is interesting and informative. She outlines the statement by the CDC in detail, explaining the source of the virus and the regions that it could be found in. Sarah explains the symptoms Ralph Ellis was experiencing and what a thogotovirus looks like. Finally, she lists precautions that people should take to avoid this newly discovered virus, such as to, “protect themselves by tick bites by using insect repellents, wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants, avoiding bushy and wooded areas and checking for ticks after spending time outdoors”.
However, there are no direct quotations from experts on the case. Also, it would be helpful if there was more background information on thogotoviruses and how they have impacted other areas in the world.
I think it is alarming how fast this harmful virus can spread. I hope that a treatment will be discovered and that our country will avoid the dangerous virus.

  2. I think Sarah’s review on this article was very well written. She gave all the background information on the man who got the virus and she explains all the symptoms he experienced. She explained the article in a very straightforward way, making it easy to follow. She also stated where the disease can be found and how it can affect Americans. Sarah’s review could be made even better if she had included even more details of the Bourbon virus and maybe if she had discussed the possibility of the disease being spread any other way than through ticks. I find it interesting that ticks can carry the disease because of how common ticks are in certain places in the US.

Sarah's review on the new virus known as the bourbon virus was very compelling and intriguing. She clearly states where the virus originated and states the symptoms of the virus from the person who contained deadly pathogen. I also like how she states the notable events that occurred after the 50-year-old man had died from this harmful virus, which gave me an insight on the details of what happened after this man's death and what the scientists and doctors did to discover what kind of virus was in the man's body. I also like how she included some direct quoting into her paragraph, which backed up what summarized about the article. To further improve on this Current Event, I suggest that Sarah should expand on what a thogoto virus is and how it affects people. Also, think she should talk the difference of a thogoto virus in America, and a thogoto virus in other parts of the world. Overall, I like this Current Event and the way it was organized. Considering that tick bites are common in the U.S, I hope there will be a way for the CDC to find a cure to this disease in the near future.

  4. Sarah wrote her review of the article very well and provided great textual evidence. She also explained the contents of the article in some of her own way but still kept all the important info. He responce to the article was well written and provided great insight into what she thought about the article. I would have liked if she had included more about the disease itself, but I do not know it that is possible or not. It would have been better if she had given more background about the thogotovirus. I did not know anything about the new virus before I read this article so I learned a lot about that.

I am doing a review of Sarah Flanagan’s current event, which is about the discovery of a new disease. She wrote her response very well, and did many things that are worth mentioning. I really like how her article had a lot of importance to humanity, which was actually one of the criteria for current events. A new sickness being discovered holds a lot of pertinence to life today because it could mean a lot of deaths in the future if we don’t figure out how to cure it. Another things that she did well was to incorporate a quote from the article. I think that this is very important to do when writing any piece because it helps back up your opinion. Yet a third thing that Sarah did well was she summarized the article she was reviewing fully, but she didn’t over summarize it by stating every single detail in the piece. I liked how she talked about how the virus can be caught. She said that, “They (CDC) believe that the disease is carried in ticks and possibly other animals”. She talked about how the virus was called the “Bourbon virus” and that it was in the “Thogoto Viruses” group, which is another thing she did which I would like to complement.
Although Sarah’s review was extremely well written, it had some flaws. As I said above, she chose an article that was very important to humanity, but she didn’t explain very well why it was important. She talked about what you should do to prevent the disease and also what the CDC is doing to prevent it, but not really what made it so important. Another area she could have improved on was that she went off topic a little bit when she was critiquing the article in her last paragraph. She said that she had to go to other websites to get more information which is fine, but she didn’t have to say what she found and which sources she went to.
One new thing that I learned from Sarah’s article is that the “CDC” stands for “Center for Disease Control and Prevention”. I knew that it had something to do with diseases but I never knew what it actually stood for.

Sarah particularly well presented the title and authors name to introduce the article was a perfect beginner to lead into the background of this shocking article. I thought she did a great job with using quotes from the article to provide evidence to the symptoms he had that led to this new virus. I thought her article was well presented by the way that she used a new topic that most people hadn’t heard about and how she shared with others through the evidence she took from the article to back up her statements.

I felt that Sarah could have finished the article better than by using a quote because it doesn’t help the reader kind of come to the sense and round up the whole article but instead she just shared ways to help prevent this virus from occurring. Sarah did not clearly define what a thogoto virus was and or how it got into the US.

I was very impressed and learned a lot about this new disease and how much the CDC can find from one blood sample from a single patient.
