"High Blood Pressure Tops the List as Chinas Highest Preventable Death"

Donald G.McNeil Jr., High Blood Pressure Tops the List of Preventable Deaths in China, October, 5th, 2010, newyorktimes.com

This decently written article is about how high blood pressure is the top preventable death in China. This article shows the death rate of people with high blood pressure over the past few years. Most of the deaths though were occurring in the elderly population, and death was mainly cause by stroke, followed by a heart attack. This is an easily preventable death if people manage their diets and eat healthy. Clearly people do not think they are unhealthy due to the death toll. Though for the Chinese dieting is very hard due to all the salt they use in their cooking making this a hard preventable death to prevent amongst the Chinese people.

This article is talking about the high blood pressure problem having to do with Chinas population. Though this is an important issue, since China is such a large piece of the world population, scientists and doctors are mainly focused on the ongoing influenzas such as swine and avian flu, even though this brings high death tolls and consequences for the Chinese population moving forward. China could just be the beginning for this preventable death. It could spread to places such as the US and other large countries. This could prove a huge problem for the rest of the world a well, in the future because people are getting too confident in the new medicine developments. Also due to the recession people are eating more fast food which is high in fat and sodium. People around the world need to think about what they are eating because it could cause death over an issue many people think they can live with.

Overall I thought this article was not very well written and much too short. The author seemed to know that the medical world was focusing more on influenza than on high blood pressure. I also felt there was not enough information about certain things such as ways to prevent people from getting high blood pressure. I never thought that high blood pressure could be such an issue until reading this article. It was very easy to read and put its point across well, just with not enough information.

  1. One thing that Louis did very well was making his presentation not too wordy, he went directly to his point. Second, he made it interesting to listen to by speaking to his audience in ways that were fun to listen to. Lastly, he connected to the audience by making eye contact and speaking to us rather than looking down.
One thing that could be done to improve the review was to give us a little more information. Also, by maybe making it a longer presentation.
I would like to learn more about why people in China are eating so much fast food at this random time.

  2. (3) Louis' presentation of his topic was very good. One thing he did well in particular was using words that people could understand. Another he broke down the article into what wa really needed and didn't use unneeded information. Lastly, his topic was interesting so i was intrigued to the topic and to what he was talking about

    (2) One thing he could have done better was to speak a little louder and more confidently and to go into a little more detail about the topic.

    (1) One thing I learned from Louis' presentation was that the Chinese are getting fatter than Americans.

  3. 1) One thing that Louis did well was his first paragraph. He summarized the article clearly, and stuck to one point rather than jumping around and making it more difficult for the reader. Second, his second paragraph was written very nicely, because he definitely emphasis’ the fact that this problem could turn into a global dilemma, and gives a lot of examples to prove this. Last, Louis made a worthy presentation because it showed that he knew what he was talking about.
    2) One thing that could be improved with Louis’ review is he could have mentioned some solutions to fix this problem in China. Although the article did not mention any, he could have added some solutions and opinions that he that he thought of to fix China’s high blood pressure, to make the article have more depth. Another thing that could have been improved was he could have given a longer presentation, with more facts. Although I don’t personally think that is Louis’ fault, because the article was very broad on this topic.
    3) One aspect of this review that I learned was that China has been seen as this very powerful and well- known nation, and now because of their high blood pressure, they could start a huge global problem that many people are unaware and coy about.

  4. Louis' review of his article was very well written, I thought. One thing he did well was that he got the point of the cause of high blood pressure in China across to us very well. He said that it was because of the recession and their cooking methods. I also liked the fact that Louis was very blunt about not liking the article. In his third paragraph he calls the article "easy to read, but with little information". Lastly, I liked how Louis clearly stated that China's high blood pressure was a big problem, and stated how it would be very difficult to fix.

Overall, I think that Louis' review was very good. I think, however, he could work on putting more detail into the write-up.

I would love to learn more about the topic in general, as I thought that no country could ever out-do America in high blood pressure rates. But according to this article, China is well on their way to doing just that.

  5. One thing that Louis did very well was he showed the reader that he truly knew what he was talking about and thus gave a good summary of the article. Another thing he did well was his topic sentence; this captured the reader’s attention so that you wanted to read the rest of the article. Lastly Louis stuck to the point he was trying to make and didn’t go off talking about random facts in the article, instead it was a simple and to the point review.

One thing that Louis could have improved was that he could have mentioned ways to improve stuff in China. Also he could have put more information into his review and gone into a little more detail.

Overall this review was very well written and I was very surprised to find out that the Chinese are beginning to eat more unhealthily then Americans, to me this was very interesting.
