The article I read was called, “Cleaning with Bleach May Lead to Childhood Infections” by Laura Geggel. The article was about researchers who found that the cleaning fluid, bleach might be causing child disease or infection. The researchers went to Spain, Finland, and The Netherlands; surveying parents of more than 9,100 children, ages 6-12. The researchers asked if the parents used bleach at least once a week, if there was mold in their home, and how often in the past year their kid(s) had infections like the flu, tonsillitis, sinusitis, bronchitis, otitis, and pneumonia. After conducting their research they found that, Finland had the lowest rate of infections (29% of kids were sick once, and 14% of kids were sick more than once), and Spain had the greatest infection rate (35% of kids were sick once, and 26% of kids were sick more than once. That left The Netherlands right in between the two with 39% of the kids being sick once a year and 21% getting sick more than once. After obtaining this info, the researchers looked into controlling factors like if the parents smoke, and the parents’ education and concluded that the frequency and number of infections were higher for the children whose parents used bleach to clean. The researchers are not positive that bleach is the reason behind the children’s health issues but they say it is very likely. They said that bleach might become volatile or airborne during cleaning. They think that children that breath it in are damaging the lining of their lungs, which leads to inflammation (which makes them more vulnerable to infection.) A fact that really surprised me was that children whose parents cleaned the house with bleach were 20% more likely to catch the flu, 35% more likely to have recurring tonsillitis and 18% more likely to have any type of recurring infection than children whose parents did not clean with bleach. Overall this article attempted to prove that bleach is a dangerous household item, and people should take this into consideration.

This article is important because a great number of households in the US as well as the rest of the world use bleach to clean their houses, yet the majority of them do not know that it could be affecting those around them. I think that many people who read this article will consider banning the use of bleach in their house. It is a common household item that could be provoking fatal illnesses and diseases.

Laura Geggel did a great job writing this article. It was very informational and well organized. The ideas flowed nicely together and it was easy to read. All of Geggel’s points seemed to be backed up by information which made the article seem very authentic. One thing that I think she could have done better is backed up the points with quotes from the researchers. Also she could have explained the background of the researchers; for example if they had conducted other experiments in the past, or their background in education to see if they really were reliable sources. Other than those two things Geggel’s article was interesting and relevant to society.

Sophie’s review of “Cleaning with Bleach May Lead to Childhood Infections,” was very well written. Sophie started the review by explaining what the researches hypothesis was. I liked this because it was straightforward so I immediately knew the purpose of the article. After explaining what the researchers hypothesis was, she explained how they acted on this hypothesis. This was very good because she gave all the statistics and information the researches obtained, which was interesting. One more thing I think Sophie did well was explaining the outcome of the research, and what she thought about it. I liked hearing her input on the research. One thing I think Sophie could have done to make the review a bit more detailed is added a quote or two from the article. This would have been could to further explain and support the statements she made in her review. Although Sophie did explain her input on the research done, one thing I think she also could have included was telling us if she herself uses bleach at home/if she doesn’t, or is she going to stop using it because of the research in this article. Overall I think Sophie’s review was very well written and interesting. I found it very interesting that bleach could be a factor to some illnesses for children, and I myself had never thought about this. I found it particularly interesting because it affects children in particularly.

Sophie's response to the article, "Cleaning with Bleach May Lead to Childhood Infections” by Laura Geggel, was very engaging. There were a few things that stood out while reading Sophie's response. The first thing that she did well was explaining the experiments that were made and the research that was found from them. She gave a lot of examples from the text that included a lot of exact percentages. The next thing that I like about this response was that at the end of the first paragraph, Sophie gave a fact that had surprised her while reading the article. It not only gives us a little bit of input on what Sophie thought of the article but it also gives us even more information about the research. Finally, I thought that in Sophie's last paragraph she made good, original suggestions for the author to do to improve the article. One thing that I think Sophie should have done in her response is to try to cut down the summary of the article in the first paragraph. Though it was very detailed, some of it was a little bit hard to understand. Instead she could have pulled direct quotes from the original article. Another thing that I would suggest is to maybe try to connect this topic to her own life a little bit more. She did say something about what she found interesting in the article but she did not say anything about how this information pertains to her own life. I found it very surprising that the bleach causes illnesses in children by the fumes it produces, making the child's lungs inflamed.

Sophie’s review of the article “Cleaning with Bleach May Lead to Childhood Infections” was informative. The studies proved that bleach, a common household item, may be harmful. She explained the study in detail, including the results and possible controlling factors. Sophie included facts and statistics that she found interesting. She also explains how the bleach hurts our bodies.
However, it would be helpful if Sophie included input from an expert on the subject. Also, I would like to know what scientists are doing to build on these findings or what steps many families should take at home.
I would not have expected that something so commonly used in households across the world could be hazardous to children's’ bodies.

Current Event CommentSophie did a great job with her current event review. She provided a detailed, and clear summary of the experiment conducted which concluded that bleach is a dangerous household product. Sophie’s second paragraph made a really good point, that this article would impact many people, and cause them to stop using bleach in their homes. After reading the article I even asked my mom to stop using bleach. In Sophie’s final paragraph she does a good job showing genuine curiosity about the scientists who conducted the experiment.
Sophie could have improved her review by including her personal response to reading the article. She stated how it might affect other people, but now how it was affecting her. She also could have also cut down on summary of the article.
As a reader I was interested by the topic of bleach being dangerous. I wonder how this discovery is going to affect bleach companies in the future. I also find it shocking that even though researchers make claims about the dangers of bleach, people still put the product on their hair and skin.

The current event review of “Cleaning with Bleach May Lead to Childhood Infections,” written by Sophie was strongly written. Sophie did a great job with including all the facts that came up in the article. By adding the facts, the reader was able to get more of a sense of what cleaning with bleach could do to your infection rate. Also, Sophie made a strong summary of the article, she made sure she added names, dates and the facts. Then she did a good job with relating the article to her own life, and connecting it to people all over the world. Though Sophie’s review was really great, there are some things she could work on. It would have been very helpful if Sophie would have added some quotes from the article. Also, if she put in the review how scientists are resolving this bleach problem. In this article I was very impressed by all the facts put into it. I can tell that this experiment is reliable by how many stats were involved in it. Overall, Sophie wrote a great review that explained the article.

I read Sophie’s review on the article, “Cleaning with Bleach May Lead to Childhood Infections”, by Laura Geggel. I enjoyed Sophie’s article very much because she included many details in the first paragraph about the article which allowed me to better understand what the topic was about. I also really liked how she included percentages related to the infection rates. This was helpful because it allowed me to better understand how bleach is affecting people. One last thing that I think Sophie did very well on is explaining the researcher’s point of view on the situation. This helps the reader because they get a professional opinion on the problem at hand. Sophie did a great job on her article, however, there is room for improvement. One aspect that I think she could have done better on is including quotes from the researchers about what they have discovered. This would help the reader really know what is going on in the scientific part of the issue. Another thing that I think Sophie could improve on is adding more information on how this issue could affect people and the world in the future. This would allow the reader to understand how serious the problems is, and if it needs to be fixed right away or not. One thing that surprised me while reading her review is how bleach gives many kids infections, this especially intrigued me because I have used bleach before, but did not know the consequences.

This review by Sophie Feinberg of the article "Cleaning with Bleach May Lead to Childhood Infections," written by Laura Geggel, was extremely well done. It is a very interesting article that gives us a whole new perspective on chemical cleaning products. Although they clean effectively and quickly, you are risking chemical exposure to possibly harmful chemicals that could endanger your childrens health. Even though they are used every day, they could potentially cause long term affects to our health and our childrens health. I really like how she chose an article that was obviously very interesting and how she managed to keep the reader reading nonstop. One thing I wish she had done better though, was the first part of her first paragraph, at first I found it a little bit confusing and had to read over the first part many times. Another thing she really succeeded in doing was describing the articles main points very clearly. I knew exactly what I was supposed to know at the end of the review without even reading the article. Just something small that could be improved upon was saving her opinion for the opinionated section, it would keep the organization better. I also really like how she worded the paragraphs. I found this article very interesting and I was amazed to find out that such a high percentage of children across the world are being born with chemical infections due to hazardous cleaning materials.
