Gorman, James. "Chimps That Hunt Offer a New View on Evolution." The New York Times.
The New York Times, 14 Apr. 2015. Web. 19 Apr. 2015.

The article Chimps That Hunt Offer a New View on Evolution by James Gorman, explains how scientists have recently uncovered the large role female chimpanzee’s play, when hunting. This information was discovered in a ten year study on chimpanzees in Senegal. In the experiment, scientists uncovered lots of information on the chimps, and their huntings styles. In the article it explains how 70 percent of male chimpanzees, hunt live prey by chasing it down, however, almost all of the females kill their prey by using tools, like broken branches with jagged edges. Soon, the scientists began to realize that the females played more of a dominant role when hunting, and were more successful in the act. As time went on in the experiment, the scientists soon began to see the females playing more of a dominant role in the bands of chimps. As the scientists saw the females, picking up things like hunting, and modifying them to make the process smoother, they concluded that the females were much smarter than the males, and appeared as the brains of the operation.
The knowledge obtained from this experiment, allows us as humans to grasp a better understanding on evolution and what we evolved from as a species. This study is very important due to how it broadens our perspective, on how chimps began to slowly evolve, like when using tree branches as hunting tools. With this information at hand, scientists can obtain a better understanding of human evolution.
James Gordon, did a fantastic job when writing this article. He did a great job of explaining the role of female chimps, while at the same time explaining how it affected human evolution. The author also did a great job when linking together different studies by stating their similarities and differences. There were no glaring grammar or spelling errors that I could notice. In conclusion this article was well written.

  2. Dylan did an excellent job explaining and presenting the new discovery of the significance of female chimpanzees. In his response to the articles something that I liked was the facts that he included. They were significant and specific, which got the reader interested. His use of vocabulary was helpful in expressing his point when reading his response. Dylan also went in depth on the newfound knowledge of female chimpanzees and their hunting abilities. Although Dylan included many facts and statistics, he could have also provided expert opinions or direct quotes from the article to validate his point. Also, if he had included background on this subject, it would have allowed the reader to further understand how this study has developed and gained new knowledge. Something that really impressed me while reading this response was that the female chimpanzees were more dominant and innovative when hunting. They killed with weapons such as branches, causing them to be more successful in this area. It was interesting to learn that this helped the study of how humans evolved from their previous state as apes.

Dylan’s review on James Gorman’s 2015 article in The New York Times titled “Chimps That Hunt Offer a New View on Evolution” was very informative and well-written from a reader’s point of view. One thing I really liked about his review was that Dylan picked a topic that not many of us (being students) have heard about. I knew very little about the way chimpanzees behave prior to reading Dylan’s review, so I just assumed that they were herbivores based the little that I did actually know. Dylan’s review expanded my knowledge on chimps’ behavior in the wild. Another thing I liked about his review was that the article he actually chose to review focused on an issue that scientists have been looking into for a long time. Evolution has always been a controversial topic, and still, to this day, many people fight over the theory’s legitimacy, but Gorman’s article that Dylan reviewed further supported evolution. A third thing I liked about Dylan’s review was that it was very concise. Dylan didn’t waste any words on explaining unnecessary details, and I find that that is always a plus when writing. While Dylan’s review was very well written, I would have liked to see some quotes from the article to further enhance the summary section of his current event. Also, I think the review could have benefitted from some proofreading, as there a few minor grammatical errors. One thing I took away from this review was that we as humans are even more closely related to chimpanzees than I had expected, which is something that makes me think more about how humans evolved into the beings we are today. All in all, Dylan’s review was very interesting and covered a topic that everyone relates to.

I read Dylan’s review of the article, "Chimps That Hunt Offer a New View on Evolution" by James Gorman. One thing he did really well was the way he explained the experiment in his summary of the article. He first gave us a clear set up of the experiment and then explained how, throughout the experiment, the scientists’ views on the matter changed, leading them to make their conclusion that female chimpanzees are smarter than males. Reading about the experiment from start to finish improves our knowledge on the matter. Another factor that was really good was the words he used. Descriptive words, such as “grasp” and “perspective”, make his review seem much more professional and paint a better visual picture for us to understand. His paragraph on the topic’s significance was also very well presented because after reading his summary, I actually had not really thought about it being a major advance in evolution. Once, he gave his explanation, however, I could clearly understand why this was important for evolution and his thoughts on it were really interesting. While this was a good review, there were some parts that could have been done better. One consistent grammatical error was his commas. There were many times when I knew what he was trying to say but it was a little confusing because commas can actually change the meaning of a sentence. Another improvement could be more specific details because I felt like sometimes, especially in his summary, he was too broad on areas that would have been stronger with evidence. However, I thought his article was well done and I was impressed on the topic he chose because it was really interesting to learn about and sounded like an important and well debated study.

  5. After reading Dylans review on "Chimps That Hunt Offer a New View On Evolution"; by James Gordon. Some things that I Noticed Dyan did really well in his review for this article were his explanation and ability to summarise the current event very well, the story was very easy to follow. Lastly i noticed that he used facts from the article to make his summary better. Two thing that I Think Dylan could have added in order to improve his article is use a direct quote from the text and add more to his opinion saying what the author could have added to the article to make it better rather than just saying it was really good. Something that I found interesting from reading this review was how when we study animals that are very close to th human kind we can learn more about ourselves as a growing human population.

I read Dylan James’ article by James Gordon, "Chimps That Hunt Offer a New View on Evolution." Dylan did an overall pretty good job on his article. He opened up his article very well and gave the reader a clear understanding of the experiment and topic at hand. I also feel that he did a good job describing the experiment and giving examples of the differences between male and female chimpanzees. I thought he also did a good job of including specific statistics and a larger vocabulary, which helped the article review tremendously. Although he had many good aspects to his review, more could be done. I felt that knowing that this experiment had gone on for 10 years, Dylan's review was quite vague and empty. Larger amounts of statistics, and quotes from scientists on the project would have helped his article greatly. I also would have enjoyed to read Dylan’s personal opinion on the topic and what his thoughts on it. Overall I think Dylan did a great job in his review and I know with a few enhancements and corrections his review will be extraordinary.

  7. I read Dylan James' review on the article "Chimps That Hunt Offer a New View on Evolution", by James Gordon. Dylan did a great job with his review. One thing Dylan did well was choosing an interesting and important article to read. A second thing Dylan did well was his summary of the article. He wrote just the right amount, he told gave us a little bit of insight into the article and its author, but not too much. A third thing Dylan did well was connecting this article to humanity, saying how it helps us greater understand our evolution. One thing Dylan could have done better was include 1 or two quotes from the article to help us understand the article better. A second thing Dylan could have included was an age recommendation for this article. One thing I learned from this article is that male and female chimpanzees have different hunting methods

  9. Dylan did an excellent job reviewing the article "Chimps That Hunt Offer a New View on Evolution " by James Gorman. Dylan was able to filter out the unimportant detail from the article and provide the strongest evidence in his review. Through simplifying the article Dylan made the topic very easy to understand and to read. He also did a good job that has significance to us as students. Although Dylan’s review was very strong it had some weaknesses as well. Dylan could have used some direct quotes from the scientists involved in this project. He also could have included some statistics that support the his claims. Overall Dylan did a very good job reviewing this article and introduced me to new knowledge about the evolution of humans.
