In the article “The Secret to Aging May Lie in How Our DNA Is Packaged”, Alice Park describes the discoveries made by scientists at the Salk Institute. A team led by Juan Carlos Izpisua Belmonte studied patients with Werner syndrome, a disease that rapidly accelerates aging. People with this disease carry cells that have loosely packed chromosomes that are located in the nucleus. This is a result of a mutation of the Werner gene that fails to organize the chromosomes and does not repair mistakes in the DNA replicating process. When scientists removed the Werner gene from a healthy embryonic stem cell, they aged prematurely. Their chromosomes loosened, as they would with a patient with Werner syndrome. Scientists hypothesize that how quickly someone ages depends on how tightly packed the DNA is.
Although this has only been done in a population of stem cells, in the future, this knowledge may develop medical technology to alter the packaging of DNA and slow or even reverse the aging process. However, further research must be done to justify that chromosome instability is the only factor to aging before scientists begin to alter genes in people.
This article was clear as to describing the how the chromosome behaves in a healthy person compared to a patient with Werner syndrome. However, the author did not clearly explain the role of the Werner gene. The author failed to write any statistics, for example, it would have been interesting to know how much quicker cells age without the Werner gene compared to healthy cells. Also, the quotes selected were redundant and did not add anything. Overall, this discovery is very promising and with further development may result in finding ways to lengthen one’s life.

  1. Evelyn's review of " The Secret to Aging May Lie in How Our DNA is Packaged", was overall pretty good. I liked the way that she described the disease studied, because I would not have known what it was without her explanation. She gave me a good idea of what the problem was and how it affected the people who have it. I also liked that her writing was to the point and concise, and brief, but effective explanations. I think she did a good job with the critique of the article. She gave the author informative, helpful criticisms but also acknowledged the strengths present in this article. I do think she should have included more outside sources in the critique, though. The expert opinions would be more compelling to the reader, since the reader doesn't know much about the patients or what type of research they are doing on the disease. I also think she could have given more information on her critique. Her information was a little sparse, and giving the author a good analysis, even if it was just pointing out the things that were good, is a key part of critiquing and article. Lastly, I didn't know that people can determine the looseness or tightness of someone's genetics and chromosomes. I think that if we get to know our chromosomal DNA better we could unlock even more medical cures, maybe even for diseases like various cancers and AIDS. Overall, I enjoyed Evelyn's critique and she had a clear, easy-to-follow writing style.

  2. Evelyn’s current event on “The Secret to Aging May Lie in How our DNA is Packaged” was very interesting to read. I was very surprised that your DNA could control your age, I always thought it was based on personal health. Evelyn did great writing her review on the article. I liked how Evelyn was able to pick and chose what she thought was most important from the article and make her review short and to the point but still informative. I also liked how Evelyn pointed out that while this research was still in it’s beginning stages, it still affects us because years from now we may be able to change the DNA. Evelyn’s description was very good. I liked how she described what led scientists to come up with this realization and tried simplifying it so that it was easier to understand. If I could add anything to this review it would be to explain more in detail why this article is important to world. While she explains why it’s important to our future she doesn’t include how this specific article is important to the world now. I also wished she could’ve added direct quotes from the article to help her explain the research. However, Evelyn still did a really good job with her current event.

This review of the article The Secret to Aging May Lie in Our DNA is Packaged by Evelyn is very interesting. I really liked how she wrote it, specifically her use of language and her sentence structure. I also liked how she explained the Werner gene because a lot of people probably don’t know what that is. Her opinion of the article was very good too. She was honest in saying the bad things about the article, but it would have been more supportive to her review if there were more positive things about the article. Also, she could have added a little more to the second paragraph. Overall, though, this review was very interesting. Its amazing to think that there is a disease out there that actually affects your aging process. Like Evelyn said, if scientists can experiment more with this Werner gene, than they could even possibly find a way to slow down aging and create longer lives. This review by Evelyn was very informative and well-written,

I found Evelyn’s review of the article “The Secret to Aging May Lie in How Our DNA is Packaged,” by Alice Park, very interesting to read because I did not know that the rate at which one ages was determined by DNA. In Evelyn’s review, I really liked how she included lots of information about the Werner gene and the result of mutations in it because I otherwise would not have known what Evelyn was writing about. I also thought that Evelyn did a good job critiquing the author’s writing and style. Evelyn provided the author with honest criticisms, but also pointed out a strength of her writing. I also liked how Evelyn described how the research could be used in the future and the next steps in the study so I knew why the study being conducted was important and necessary. Although Evelyn had many strong points in her review, there were a few things that she could work on. One would be to include more experts’ opinions or some quotes from the author’s writing in her review, so readers could get another person’s perspective and thoughts on the study. Another thing that Evelyn could improve in her review would be to include a bit more information about the behavior of the chromosomes in a healthy person and those in a patient with Werner syndrome because although I did get information about their behavior in a person with Werner syndrome, I do not fully know about their behavior in a healthy person. From Evelyn’s review, I learned about the Werner gene mutation, and that it could actually affect the rate at which one ages. I think experimenting more with the gene would be very useful so that one day, scientists may be able to find a way to slow the aging process.

The current event review of “The Secret to Aging May Lie in How Our DNA Is Packaged”, written by Evelyn Kluemper was strongly written. In this review, Evelyn was successful with many writing methods. By Evelyn explaining the experiments on finding out about our DNA, this helped the reader understand the article more. Also, I liked how Evelyn focused on how the author didn’t involve statistics and wrote that in her conclusion. Evelyn was also successful with talking about how this will affect our future. Although Evelyn had a strong review article, there are some aspects she could work on. I think it would be a good idea for Evelyn to have explained the article more than the actual experiment. Also, Evelyn could have added more onto the second paragraph and relating the article to herself. In this article, I was impressed to learn that scientists might find a way to reverse our aging cycles. Overall, this article was very well written and informative.

This review of “The Secret to Aging May Lie in How our DNA is Packaged” by Evelyn Kluemper was a great review on an interesting topic. I was very intrigued to learn more from the way Evelyn wrote the review. She made her arguments concise and informative. Her description was also very well said. Evelyn showed that she definitely knew this topic. I liked how she described what led scientists to come up with this realization and tried simplifying it so that it was easier to understand. If Evelyn could have added some statistics, this review would have been made even better. Also, if she included outside sources opinions such as doctors or researchers, this review would have been better. I was not surprised, but intrigued to learn that the secret to aging lied in the human genome.

I found Evelyn’s review of the article “The Secret to Aging May Lie in How Our DNA is Packaged,” by Alice Park, very interesting to read. In Evelyn’s review, I really liked how she included lots of information about the Werner gene. It was good to know the result of mutations in it because before reading this review, I did not know anything about this gene, let alone, this topic. I also thought that she did a good job giving the author constructive criticism that could have made the article more interesting, and easier to follow.Even though she mentioned what the author could have done better on, she also did not forget to include the good parts of the article in her review to the author. I also liked how Evelyn described how the research could be used in the future. She mentioned the steps that needed to be taken to make this discovery even more successful. Even though this was an amazing review, there is room for improvement. Something that she could have included would be an experts’ opinions or some quotes from the author. This could have allowed the reader to better understand where researchers are on the process, and what they are thinking. Another thing that Evelyn could improve in her review would be to include more information on ger critique. This review gave good information for briefly explaining what the article is about to someone who did not know much about the topic. However, it would have been helpful if she concluded more so the reader could become an “expert” on what the author is trying to say. From Evelyn’s review, I learned about the Werner gene mutation, and that it could actually affect the rate at which one ages. And overall, her article was very well written and informed me and others of what is being done to research DNA.

Evelyn's review of " The Secret to Aging May Lie in How Our DNA is Packaged", was overall a very intriguing piece. There were several things Evelyn did very well when writing this review. In Evelyn's review she did a very good job when describing the disease studied. Without this explanation, I would have been very confused when reading her review, due to the lack of information I know on the topic. She also did a great job when explaining the problem the disease is and the affect it has on those how have it. Lastly, I think Evelyn did an incredible job when critiquing the article. She gave the author informative, helpful criticisms but also acknowledged the strengths present in this article. Although her review was fantastic, there were a few aspects that could have been changed to better the piece as a whole. One of which being, she could have included experts’ opinions or some quotes from the author. This could have provided the reader with a new understanding of how researchers are approaching this topic. Another thing Evelyn could have done to improve her paper, would be to talk about her opinion on the topic, to allow the reader to gain a more personal feel when reading the paper. From reading this review, I obtained new information about the Werner gene mutation, and that it could actually affect the rate at which an individual ages. In conclusion, I believe that Evelyn did a great job when writing this review.

Evelyn’s review of the article“The Secret to Aging May Lie in How our DNA is Packaged” by Alice Parker was very captivating and had a lot of fascinating details. One thing I liked how Evelyn was able to pick and chose what she thought was most important from the article and make her review short and sweet and go to the point but still informative and compelling. I also liked how Evelyn pointed out that while this research was still in it’s opening stages, it still affects us and people across the country because years from now we may be able to change the DNA of people. Evelyn’s description was very good. Evelyn showed that she definitely was knowledgeable on this topic. I enjoyed how she described what led scientists to come up with this realization and tried simplifying it so that it was easier for a reader to comprehend. If I could suggest anything to Evelyn to improve this critique it would be to explain more in detail why this article is important to world. Also, I think she should add some more personal opinions. I also wished she could’ve added quotes from the article and the author to help her explain the research. In the end, Evelyn still did a really good job with her current event.
