New Study Links Weather Extremes to Global Warming

Gillis, Justin. "New Study Links Weather Extremes to Global Warming." The New York Times. The New York Times, 27 Apr. 2015. Web. 27 Apr. 2015.

Throughout the article, “New Study Links Weather Extremes to Global Warming,” written by Justin Gill, Gill describes the new developments that have come with global warming.  As a result of human emissions leading to frequent heat extremes, scientists have concluded that if interruptions are made in the process, the number of heat extremes will increase in vast amounts.  Furthermore, if these emissions continue at an extremely rates, heavy rain falls will occur much more often in the upcoming future.  While some might say that these problems have occurred since before human influence, although Dr. Eric Fisher agrees with the doubters, he says “But the odds have changed, and we get more of them.”  Not only is Fisher concerned with our future years down the road, but the common increases in temperature should cause our society today to worry about the present.  Heat waves continue to play a role on many members of the world, and if the average temperature of the world continues to increase by day, these heat waves will continue to grow and create havoc throughout many nations.  However, while these scenarios are quite possible, if we are able to limit the number of human emissions in the next few years, according to Dr. Fisher’s studies, the heat extremes will increase, but not by much.  In all, Fisher’s experimentation into this field has led many to wonder whether the use of human emissions is necessary.
While these studies are based off one doctor’s intellectual opinion on global warming, I completely agree with Dr. Eric Fisher, in saying that these human emissions are completely unnecessary and can be avoided.  The impact on the economy and the environment, if these changes were to occur, would prove dividends in providing this planet with the safety and protection it deserves.  Not only will these heat extremes if not dealt with impact the environment in a negative way, but also the increase in heat waves could end the lives of so many innocent souls.  These changes need to occur, and I hope to do anything possible in future years to cure these withstanding issues.
Although I do believe Justin Gill did a terrific job in his analysis of Dr. Eric Fisher’s research, I see a few areas that need improvement.  For example, while Gill mentions Fisher’s research, he never cares to acknowledge the vast numbers of studies that have been done supporting other opinions on the sources of these temperature increases or the nonexistence of global warming.  Furthermore, I would have liked to see Gill, towards the end of the article, have a few paragraphs explaining his own view on the topic.  I truly believe these two small incorporations of detail would heighten the meaning and success of this paper.

  1. I chose to read Sam’s review on the article New Study Links Weather Extremes to Global Warming by Justin Gillis. Sam’s review was well written, interesting, and informative. He did several things that contributed to the articles successful. For starters, Sam wrote a great summary of the article. He introduced the topic very nicely and gave many details about the topic he was discussing. Also, Sam included a quote from an expert on the subject named Dr. Eric Fisher. The use of quotes in a review shows the reader that this is a well investigated topic and that real scientists are working with it. Lastly, Sam was very critical about the article, which is a good thing because it means he closely reading it and noted the errors and possible edits the author can make. Although Sam did a great job writing the review, there are some things that he could’ve done that would’ve made the review even better. For example, Sam could have expanded on who Dr. Eric Fisher was and what kind of research he’s done in the past. Also, Sam could’ve incorporated why this article benefits or effects our generation or age group. I was able to learn a lot from reading Sam’s review on this article. For example, as a result of human emissions leading to frequent heat extremes the number of heat extremes will increase in vast amounts. One fact that intrigued me the most after reading Sam’s review was if the average temperature of the world continues to increase by day, these heat waves will continue to grow and create havoc throughout many nations. This fact is a little scary to me and I’m curious as to what is being done to fix this pressing issue.

  2. I chose to comment on Sam Powell’s review of “New Study Links Weather Extremes to Global Warming” by Justin Gillis. One thing that I enjoyed about Sam’s review was how he logically presented his information. The clear presentation of the material covered in the article was conducive to my understanding of the possible changes in weather extremes. I also liked his use of quotations throughout the review. His inclusion of opinions from experts on the subject back up the points he makes throughout the piece. Furthermore, I appreciate how Sam created an thoughtful connection from the article into his own personal life. The personal connection adds to my understanding of the article because it supplements my understanding of human greenhouse gas emission, as well as the possible impacts that increased global temperatures could have on our lives. Finally, Sam’s great use of vocabulary and good punctuation made his review more enjoyable to read. Though much of Sam’s report was very good, there are a couple things he could improve upon. First of all, he could include some more background on the evolution of the thought process behind Gillis’ analysis and the paper itself. Occasionally I was confused because I did not have a full understanding of the subject and science behind it. Additionally, he could expand on his critique of the article because as such a controversial, opinionated, topic the author's style and opinion matter a lot. I learned many things from Sam’s review, but one thing that stood out to me was that if these emissions continue at an extremely rates, heavy rain falls will occur much more often in the upcoming future. This interesting hypothesis could potentially affect thousands of people in both positive and negative ways. Overall, Sam did a great job with all parts of his review and I learned a lot about the possible effects of extreme weather on global warming.
