“CDC Investigates Deadly Bacteria’s Link to Doctor’s Offices

Cohen, Elizabeth. “CDC Investigates Deadly Bacteria’s Link to Doctor’s Offices – CNN.com”   CNN. Cable News Network. Web. 25 Feb. 2015.

This article is about how the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) believes that a dangerous bacteria called C.difficile was found in several doctor’s offices. This was unusual because this bug was mostly found in hospitals but a study shows that many people who had the bacteria hadn't been to the hospital for a while, but had gone to the doctor’s recently. The bacteria have infected nearly half a million Americans in a year. Dr. Cliff McDonald, a medical epidemiologist at the CDC said, “This is really an important issue. We need to understand better how people are getting C. diff” (Cohen, para 6).
It is an important article because it talks about a disease that can affect anybody who visits a doctor’s office.  Not much is known about C.diff, though the CDC is extremely concerned about it, and they are even starting a national study. The CDC are recommending that patient who visit the doctor’s should wash their hand with soap and water and would question the antibiotics they are prescribed. It is still not sure whether the patients already had the disease before going to the doctors or if it was the antibiotics that caused it.

This article was definitely interesting and could potentially affect everyone. I liked how the author included some examples of studies that were done to try and test if people had gotten the disease from going to the doctor’s or if they had it before. I didn't like how the author didn't include much about the disease itself and what could happen to people who have it. The only thing that the she told us about the disease was that it caused deadly diarrhea…

  1. I chose to analyze on Cindy's review of the article, "CDC Investigates Deadly Bacteria’s Link to Doctor’s Offices" by Elizabeth Cohen. The article discusses how a deadly bacteria that was previously thought to have been found in solely hospitals, it is now being found in doctors offices around the country. Cindy's review of the article was very informative and there were several things that I liked about her review. First of all, I thought Cindy's use of statistics throughout the review contributed to her argument and backed up her opinions. For example, she mentioned how half a million people have been infected with C.difficile, the harmful bacteria, in the past year. I also liked how she made a thoughtful analysis of the article in her final paragraph. She pointed out the authors shortcomings as well as including the authors best point. Furthermore, I appreciated Cindy's inclusion about what the CDC is preparing to do in case the bacteria continues to expand as well as what they are doing now. Despite most of the review being well done, there were several aspects that could be improved. Her review is a bit lacking in terms of the impact on us. This deadly virus is important and may affect people around us and I wish Cindy expanded on that a bit more. In addition, she could have provided some more background on the virus and its history, this would have helped me understand what she would say later. I learned a lot form this article/review, but the thing that stood out to me the most was how most of the public is unaware of the disease even though it is very harmful and affects over 500,000 people each year. In conclusion, Cindy's review was knowledgable and informative but she lacked analysis in some areas.

Cindy did an excellent job in writing a report for this current event. Although she chose a relatively short article without a lot of information, Cindy was able to pick out the most important sections to include in her summary. I loved how she included a quote from an expert as evidence and she brought attention to a potentially deadly disease that can affect almost anyone to our attention. I also agree with Cindy’s critique that the author should have gone into depth about the disease. This review could have been made better if Cindy had conducted some research on the disease, so that her critique of the article could have been stronger. The review could also have been improved if Cindy had corrected some of the grammatical mistakes in her report. From reading this article and its report, I learned about the existence of C. difficile and how I can make sure that I don’t contract the disease.

  3. I chose to comment on Cindy’s article about a disease recently discovered in doctor’s offices. Cindy did a very good job explaining the relevance of this issue and how it came to be. I also liked how she clearly explained the relevance of this disease and how it affects people in the U.S. Cindy’s use of facts to back up her ideas helped justify her arguments. I also liked how Cindy developed a very good analysis to finalize her thoughts about this article and the issue. Although there were many very good aspects of her review, it would have been helpful if Cindy had included more on the background of this disease. Cindy did a very good job of explaining the relevance of the disease in the U.S., but it would have been interesting to know the details of the direct impact that this disease has on us. I learned a lot from Cindy’s review of this article. It was very interesting to learn about this new disease that i was not aware of before reading this article. Now I know to always wash my hands very carefully at the doctor’s office.
