"Gulf of Mexico Turns deadly for Dolphins" Review By Scott McGrath
Nuwer, Rachel. "Gulf of Mexico Turns Deadly for Dolphins." New York Times(2015): n. pag. Web. 2 Mar. 2015.
In the article “Gulf of Mexico Turns Deadly for Dolphins,” the author Rachel Nuwer discusses how and why hundreds of dolphins are dying along the Gulf of Mexico. Since February 2010, approximately 1,300 dead or near death marine mammals have washed up on the beaches or marshes from Florida all the way to Texas. Mostly consisting of Bottlenose Dolphins. There is no determined cause for the deaths, but most suspect the BP Deepwater Horizon disaster back in 2010. There have been four big clusters of Bottlenose Dolphins, one before the oil spill, and three afterwards. The first cluster was thought to have been caused by cold water with a deadly mixture of freshwater. The clusters after the spill however, are thought to have been caused by the oil contamination, but are not scientifically confirmed. Scientists cannot confirm this yet as for there were no morbillivirus found the dolphins as in other oil related deaths.
This article is significant because it shows us that we can’t always find the cause of some issues. Although most suspect the oil contamination from the spill in 2010, we still aren’t 100 percent sure. It’s scary to think that a serious event like this might not get a scientific answer for some time. It makes us think that there could be a deadly disease unknown to us at this point in time that could infect many others before we even get a clear idea to what’s causing it.

This article was very well written. The only aspect I think the author could have improved upon is that she didn’t put enough detail in the article. It was enough to understand the topic, but it was hard to think upon the issue at hand. It would have been great if she added more quotes from higher ranking scientists and some more information about how oil contamination found in other mammals directly after the oil spill differed from what was found in the dead dolphins body’s. Overall, the article did well on informing us about how the Gulf of Mexico’s once pristine waters might not be so safe for some mammals.

Scott did a good job of presenting his topic in the beginning of his critique. I was able to discover his opinion of the article and what the purpose of the article was without getting too much information which I liked. Scott also did a great job presenting the information from the article in a clear and thoughtful style. After I had finished reading the first paragraph, I had an excellent understanding of the subject discussed and wanted discover what other opinions he had on the topic as well. Lastly, I really liked how he gave the reader background information on the incident going back to February 2010 when the oil spill occurred and giving information on how this has affected animals since. Not knowing a whole lot of the important details of the oil spill and how fatal it was, it was very helpful that he gave me the information so I could understand the topic better. It is a scary topic and he did a good job explaining the seriousness of the issue. However, I did not like how he rarely cited anything in his paragraphs. This made it difficult for the reader to be convinced of anything that he is saying due to the fact that he has no citations from any important people that he was able to find in his article. Another suggestion I would give Scott would be to give an example words that he did not understand and he had to look up. I’m curious as to what kind of vocabulary he learned. After reading Scott’s response to the article, I was able to learn a lot about the Gulf of Mexico oil spill and how it has affected many sea creatures in the area including Bottlenose Dolphins and also how the damage can severely affect the population by this terrible accident. To conclude, I believe Scott did a fantastic job on teaching us about the issues that the Gulf oil spill proposes to the creatures around the gulf including Bottlenose Dolphins and what can happen if this problem is not taken very seriously.

After reading Scott's article I feel that he did a great job presenting the topic he read. I felt that he really understood and communicated the information he learned quite well, given the amount he was presented with. He communicated the information he learned in a very clear and well organized way, which was very helpful. The way the information was presented made me want to read and learn more on this topic, since not a lot of information has been discovered on this topic. I felt that it was extremely helpful that Scott included how the oil spill in the Gulf could possibly be a reason for the number of dolphin death. Also the fact that he included the results and effect on animals from the Gulf spill in 2010, gives the reader an important perspective and lead as to why these dolphins are dying.
I felt that Scott while doing a tremendous job getting the information across, it would have been helpful to have some of the quotes he mentioned, cited and not just described. I also felt that he could have extended his second paragraph and given us some more information. It just felt that something was missing.
I had never heard of this situation before and reading this critique really caught my attention to the issue at hand. I hope to read more articles and learn more about this situation, because I feel that it is one that may not be getting enough attention. In conclusion I feel that Scott did a great drop communicating his findings with us in a well developed and organized way, and that he really brought the issue of the bottlenose dolphins the attention it so greatly deserves.

I thought Scott did a great job writing a review of the article Gulf of Mexico Turns Deadly for Dolphins by Rachel Nuwer. I though he did a great job about portraying the article accurately, and at the same time providing his own input. His work was very organized and thought through. His first paragraph was especially informative and gave a great deal of background information. I liked how he included specific statistics like 1,300 dead or near death marine mammals in result of the oil spill. It made the issue that much more real. I also liked how he was able to generalize some of the information. It made it easier to read. I would have liked Scott to include more quotes from expert analysis of the incident. In addition, it would have been great if he elaborated more on the significance of the oil spill. I was impressed by how Scott portrayed the issue, and I hope that more people complete current events on topics like this.

  4. Scott did a great job on critiquing the article he has chosen. I specifically believe he did a great job starting his critique. The name of the article captured my attention. It is called, “Gulf of Mexico Turns Deadly for Dolphins,” by Rachel Nuwer. Not only the title was good but the way he introduced it. He hooked the reader, myself, and I thought he did that well. The second thing Scott did well was he had a lot of information. He provided facts as well as statistics which led to a good critique. I agree with Scott's opinion of why this is significant. After reading his critique it led me to agree with why this matters. As well as this Scott seemed like he knew what he was talking about. Not only did he have facts and statistics but he had general background knowledge.
To make this critique even better I would add quotations from anyone involved with the topic. It helps get a sense of the issue and it would be helpful. One other thing I would add is he could have talked more about his opinion. He did get the overall idea over but I feel like he could have talked more about what he thought.
After reading this critique it made me aware of what's happening to wildlife around the world. After reading this I was so interested I looked more into the incident.

Scott picked a very interesting article and made very good points. He told us about the BP oil spill that happened since 2010 and its effects on the environment; this helped the reader know the impact it had on animals and natural resources. Scott didn’t have a very long summary about the article but was clear in his points in general. Another thing Scott did very well was he brought up a good points about the effects the facts that scientists do not know the exact imapact on these animals. This is a very scary thought, all the dolphins dying in the Gulf of Mexico and there is no traces of anything out of the ordinary. Scott didn’t use advanced vocabulary and that made the review bland and uninteresting. Also, Scott didn’t talk about why people believe that oil is killing these animals, even though scientists have proven it is not oil related. Finally, I was very surprised with the fact that 1,300 marine mammals have died and with all of our technology today we cannot find out the source.

Scott McGrath reviewed the article, “Gulf of Mexico turns deadly for Dolphins” by Rachel Nuwer. Scott did a good job providing accurate information of the article, giving good information and examples in his review. Along with this information, he did a good job providing his thoughts on the topic. Finally, Scott did a good job providing enough information to make sure the reader of his review had a good understanding, with minimal questions remaining. One thing Scott could’ve done better was inputting enough quotes, as I think they would be useful to back up his argument in a solid manner. Another area of improvement would be in telling the reader what words he had trouble with, and had to look up. I believe I learned a lot and am glad to have read it. I found the affect on the sea creatures very interesting. To conclude, Scott did a fantastic job reviewing this article and did a good job making sure the reader had a good understanding of the topic.
