Mars Rover Finds Stronger Potential for Life

  • Kaufman, Marc. "Mars Rover Finds Stronger Potential for Life." New York Times 8 Dec. 2014: n. pag. Print.

The article, Mars Rover Finds Stronger Potential for Life by Marc Kaufman tells the reader about a new rover that went to study Mars and the results it found. The article first states what is needed for something to be alive. Then, Kaufman tells us the rover found water, and other key substances needed for life. The Curiosity rover’s year long trek on Mars  and the pictures that  were sent back led scientists to believe that mars was once a habitable planet. Dr. John P. Grotzinger of Caltech says that Mars had lakes and river deltas on and off for tens of millions of years. Kaufman next gives an overview Grotzinger’s study. The article talks about how there are still missing pieces to the puzzle because organic compounds have not been detected yet on mars, which is a key component to create life. Kaufman writes that Curiosity team members found some martian simple organics and that part of the puzzle actually could be solved.
The significance of this article to humanity is that possible life on other planets is a very important and intriguing topic. It is also very popular right now and would be good for people to know that are very interested in this topic. I personally also find this interesting because if the is or was life on Mars I would like to learn and know about it. This news could also get the idea of life on another planet into peoples minds. This article is also significant because it is a breakthrough in a huge study that costs a huge amount of money for the US and its good to know the money isn't going to waste with this new information.
Overall, Kaufman did an outstanding job with this article. He included a lot of detail about what is needed to create life, and a lot about the planet Mars. Kaufman also included many opinions and ideas from NASA scientists, and from members of the Curiosity Rover science team. Opinions and ideas are very important in an article and Kaufman did a good job including them. Another thing that was done well in the article was making the article clear and straightforward so it was easy for readers to understand and get the concept of life on Mars. I would recommend this article for high schoolers and up  because there are a few hard vocabulary words and the topic of the article is a complicated topic

  1. I iked how you explain all the scientific part of the story. I also liked how he explained how it was significant to the USA and the human race. I found it nice that he used the names of everything to make the article better. I did think he was a bit vague on the mission. I also would have liked if he a explained what is needed to live other than just saying, "The article first states what is need to be alive." I did not know what was happening in the mission and thought it was a good, informative article to do.

  2. Griffin did a great job finding an interesting article that has a big impact on people today. Even though life on mars is such a complicated topic, Griffin is able to explain it in a way that is very easy to understand. It is also very helpful that Griffin gives the opinions of scientists on the curiosity rover team. There are not many problems with Griffin’s review but one thing that catches my eye is the sudden change in spacing. It would be much easier for the reader if Griffin stuck to one size of spacing throughout the review. I learned a lot of new information about the progress that is being made with the curiosity rover. It is interesting to see that the curiosity rover team is getting back positive results and discovering new information about our universe.
