"AFLOAT IN THE OCEAN, EXPANDING ISLANDS OF TRASH"

Hoshaw, Lindsey. “Afloat in the Ocean, Expanding Islands of Trash” New York Times (Online) 11 Nov 2009. 10 Nov 2009.
1,000 miles northeast of Hawaii, there is patch of the Pacific Ocean where trash is all that can be seen. Things like bottle caps, toothbrushes, Popsicle sticks and very small of pieces of plastic fill the Pacific garbage patch, a place where the trash that inhabits it doubles every 10 years. This place is believed to be about twice the size of Texas! Scientists state that the patch is just one of five that could be around the world’s oceans. Plastic is most common in the patch because it can float, making its way and over time, breaking down. But once it does break down, the sections look like confetti. Millions and even more of these plastic pieces are floating in the world’s oceans. Charles Moore found the Pacific garbage patch by accident 12 years ago. He came upon it when he was coming back from a sailing race in Hawaii. Many scientists believe there is a garbage patch off the coast of Japan and another in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Jeffery Ernst says, the patch was “just a reminder that there’s nowhere that isn’t affected by humanity.”
At first, I chose this article at a glance. However, after reading it I realized that it is very important that our society learns how much we affect the environment around use. Especially we should know how our waste affects the eco-systems of many other animals. Also, I do care about our environment. <3
I thought this article was very boring to read. The topic was interesting, but there were way to many articles and it was too complex for someone who just wants to know a little about the topic. I thought the writing was very easy to understand and for the most part I enjoyed reading this article.

  1. I thought that when you simplified this article you did it very well. Making sure that you still included details like how the trash doubles every 10 years which I thought was a vital because it gave an indication that the problem wasn't new.
I think you could have included more about the effects it has on the environment rather than just saying it was bad. Although it might not have had a complete list I did like how you added as an opinion that things like this can damage different eco-systems and animals.
And in this present day and age I hope that everyone cares about the environment too (:

    Chemistry Article review

Caroline Yerkes article review on “afloat in the ocean, expanding islands of trash” was written very well. One thing that she did really well was writing about what kind of trash was found in the ocean. This will make me think twice about what I am throwing away and what I am recycling. Another thing she does well is explaining the article with a good amount of details so it was not over written and boring. She also included areas where the garbage is found. This is good because it shows the reader that we are also affected by it not just some country far away. Something that Caroline could have done better is explaining more in depth in why the garbage floats in a mass instead of detached. Another thing that she could have done better is describing real problems that this is causing. Something that I found interesting and that I did not know is what the garbage looks like after it decomposes a little, which is confetti.

  3. One of the things i think you did very well was explain how big of a problem this trash crisis really is. One fact you gave me that astounded me was that you said it was the size of texas and is still growing. one other aspect that was well represented was the way you said we could stop this was if the world were just a little more aware of littering and recyling.
One suggestion is that i think you should have maybe given another place where the trash build up is bad or a problem that trash is causing somewhere else so we can take examples or learn from it.
I was impressed by the way you shared your article in class and i was also impressed by how nobody deeply cares or is fixing this problem that we have now.

  4. I thought you exlained the article really well. You also made the topic really east to uderstand. When you were talking about the article it mad a lot of questions spring up in my head.
I thought you could have spoken a little a louder. I also thought that you could have given more ways to prevent trash build up in the oceans.
I was amazed that this problem hasn't been taken care of.

  5. Caroline presented this very well because she explained the problem of expanding trash and put detail into it such as how much of it is there in the ocean. Also, she explained how this garbage is affecting the environment and people. Finally, she gave detail about where the trash is precisely and how big does it get.

Caroline could've given more detail on how the trash might affect us and the envirronmet in the future. And, she could've explained why there is garbage in the ocean in the first place.

Since I was interested in this article I would like to research how this problem might escalate.

One thing Caroline presented very well was how big of a problem this topic really is to the entire world. Also you gave a good example of how trash in the ocean is bad for our environment. Also a third thing Caroline did well was show her understanding of the topic. Two things that could have made this article better were, either describing a specific area where these trash islands exist, or talk of a place we could move these trash islands to instead of them floating in the water. I learned, and was amazed at the fact that one of the trash islands is as big as Texas.

  7. I read Caroline’s article called, “Afloat in the Ocean, Expanding Islands of Trash”. It was written very well and I enjoyed reading it. She thoroughly explained what kinds of trash were found and it made me realize that some things I throw out could be hazardous to animals. She really showed her understanding of the topic when she presented it in class, without hesitation.
One thing I would do to make the article better was to describe a specific area where trash islands exist and also possibly talking about the problems that these islands are causing.
I found it interesting that the trash island is almost the size of Texas and is still growing.

  8. 3) In Caroline's summary she presented very clearly the main topic. She also mentioned it is so important to take care of the environment. Lastly she gave really specific information and included important details.

    2) Caroline never really said much about the effects that this garbage island has on the world. Obviously it can't be good but it would have been good to say why. Another thing she could have done was said where the other trah islands are because I think it would be interesting to know.

    1) One thing I learned from the article was how important it is to take care of the environment or these disgusting trash could become bigger o more could be created.

  9. Caroline's article, “Afloat in the Ocean, Expanding Islands of Trash” was very interesting. I think Caroline wrote the article well, explaining the main topic very well. Also, she did a good job as to getting the problem out, telling us how bad the oceans are getting. Another thing Caroline did well was make me think about how I could help. One thing Caroline should have expanded on was how the garbage effected the earth as a whole. Another thing she could have explained better was the specific areas of one place where garbage was and what it looked like, how dirt it was ect. One thing I would like to learn more about is how to help and get everyone involved in helping.

  10. I like how Caroline successfully simplified the article from long boring and confusing to simple and to the point. This article affects everyone, like Caroline stated, ‘there’s nowhere that isn’t affected by humanity.’ Also, this topic was very interesting and I liked how easy it was to follow, not at all tedious. Two suggestions I have to make this review even better is to include more details on the effects of this trash, or maybe the causes of it? For example, how did it get there, if people are just now discovering it? I was also curious to know what people are doing to help this problem. Overall, I think this review was very well written and I enjoyed reading it. :)
