Is Doomsday Coming? Perhaps, but Not in 2012

                                                            By Dennis Overby

In this article it is saying the accusations that the earth will end in 2012 is completely false. The team of NASA said that doomsday would not be happening in 2012 as many people have been frantic about and is much like the situation when CERN in Russia last year said the earth would be eaten by a black hole. NASA says this idea was contemplated because this is when the 5,125-year cycle known as the Long Count in the Mayan calendar supposedly ends. This myth you could say was built up more than it was needed to be because the movie 2012 was on coming attractions and coming out this month. The NASA team says how this movie made people more frantic than necessary such as sending scientist emails asking if they should kill themselves to avoid suffering in 2012. This movie also allowed people to react more because it had a “scientific” hypothesis on how the world would end. Saying the Earth and the sun went into a strange alignment and storms and natural occurrences on earth went crazy. This article ensures everyone on Earth that an occurrence like this won’t happen for millions of years.

This article obviously affects humankind in the way that everyone no longer has to live in fear of the date December 21, 2012. The scientists of NASA have ensured to us we will not be harmed by this alignment of the sun and earth because the alignment changes every year by necessity. These science fiction movies from this article we see are taken more seriously sometimes than actual science fact, which is ironic. It shows us how human kind takes to advertisement and entertainment too seriously sometimes and must check back into reality and facts especially in a situation such as the Earth ending.

This article was the most interesting science article I have read in my life defiantly. I would say this most likely because it includes a relevant topic to entertainment for many ages and compares the facts with the truth. I like how it pointed out science fiction is NEVER facts and we must check facts before going crazy. Also this article was written with simple vocabulary and therefore easy to understand unlike many science articles. Lastly I believe this article gave many straightforward facts and when it used outside information it gave a brief background on the connection it made or fact it used. This allowed for me to read the whole article with understanding.

  1. In the article, “Is Doomsday Coming? Perhaps, but Not in 2012” Brooke did a great job in reviewing this article. First, she picked a very interesting topic that everyone would be interested in because the world ending in 2012, is a very worldly and hot topic these days. Second, while presenting her review she talked loudly and clearly, which showed that she knew what she was talking about, and a sense of confidence about her topic. Last, she explained the research a lot, which made it a lot easier to understand.
Although Brooke did a great job reviewing this article, there are still some things that could have been done to improve it. First, I think Brooke could have defined a few difficult vocabulary words. Also, she could have gone into more detail about the Mayan calendar.
From this review, I have learned that science fiction movies from are taken more seriously sometimes than actual science fact, and how that should not be the case.

  2. One of the many things Brooke did very well was give her audience details. She thoroughly explained her article and left us with very few questions. Secondly, she was enthusiastic about her article, and proved to us that she really understood it and was interested in it. She made it clear this was something that she took interest in and her enthusiasm was reflected on her presentation. Lastly, instead of looking down throughout her presentation, she made clear eye contact and made her audience feel at ease.
Although she did many things well, there are a few things that could have been done a little better. One of these things is including more details in her presentation on the Russian’s observations and ideas of the world ending. Second, maybe explaining more details of the scientist’s observations on how the world is not ending. For instance, how are they sure? Or what examples prove their conclusion?
The main thing that I learned from this article was the world in fact isn’t going to end in 2012. I, along with many others, were quite bewildered at the idea of the world ending in roughly 3 years. I was very unaware that people were sending emails questioning suicide. This comes to show that this idea became way out of proportion.

  3. In this article review for the article “Is Doomsday Coming? Perhaps, but not in 2012”, many interesting ideas were presented. I liked how Brooke summarized the article. She included all of the main details that were needed to understand the article. I liked how she was in disagreement about the ending of the world in 2012, because so am I. When Brooke was presenting her article in class, she spoke like she really knew what she was talking about, and like she was very familiar with the article. She made it clear she knew what she was talking about.
Overall, Brooke did very well in the article review. Although, she could improve on explaining the Mayan doomsday theory by providing more detail about it. I also think she could have talked less about the movie “2012” and more about what NASA had to say about the world’s end.
I would like to learn more about the Mayan doomsday theory. As it seems that the American people took the idea a little too far.

  4. This article was a very good choice as people can take sides as to what the outcome of this "rumor" will be.
Something that I thought was missing from Brooke's explanation was the details of why people thought that this was the date, giving specific examples of people their theories.
I am now slightly more convinced that the world will not end 12/21/12 so thank you for the peace of mind(:

  5. I think that the article was very captivating in a way it really attracts the readers attention. This article shows the true contoversy the on going argument of whether or not the world would end, and contradicts this argument with a thesis that it will end, but certainly not in our lifetime. I also think that the thesis is ver moving and gives hope to some people who may actually think the word my end. But despite the pros of this article, I think she could have done a better job explaing why the sun changes position every year in order to explain why it is different from the prediction of the movie 2012. She could have also given us some names of the people who contradicted this theory of 2012 as wrong. I think this article is very factual and insuring the the world will not end in 2012.

  6. One aspect of this article that i liked was the fact that all these rumors have been going around about 2012 and it is nice to know that this is just some ancient mayan prediction. Another thing i like about this article was some of the facts it stated such as storms will not happen because of the strange alignment of the sun and the earth for another million years. I think you could have put more about how the Mayans came to predict this and how they were so smart with so little to use. It impressed me that this got to be such a big deal that people sent in letters asking if i should kill myself.

  7. In the article, “Is Doomsday Coming? Perhaps, but Not in 2012” Brooke did a good job explaining people’s theories on the world ending. This is a very timely topic that a lot of people are debating today which makes it very interesting to do a review on. She did a very good job in explaining and gave a lot of detail in her review. Also in the review it seemed like Brooke was very enthusiastic about the topic and truly was interested which made it a captivating report. Before I never really understood the ancient Mayan prediction but this report explained it to me a lot better.
While Brooke did a very good job in reviewing the article, one thing I didn’t like about this report was I think Brooke should have defined some of the vocabulary in the article. Also to improve her report she could explain in more depth the exact research the scientists made to discover that this Mayan prediction is not true.
I learned that despite many people’s suspicions the world in fact is not going to end in 2012. Brooke’s review well described the crazy theories of people and why those theories are not true.

  8. In this article, several aspects were well presented. Brooke goes right to the point in this review, not wasting any time. Also, the article picked was about an interesting and current topic. The article is also very logical and makes a lot of sense, unlike some reviews where there are many gigantic undecipherable words throughout. However, there were some ways that the review could have been made better. For example, there were some grammar problems in the review, and some sentences that didn't make sense. Also, I wanted to know more about the Mayan calendar. What happens when the calendar ends? I did not know that many people were considering suicide because of 2012. That surprised me.
