Mt. Kilimanjaro Ice Cap Continues Rapid Retreat

Bhanoo, Sindya. “Mt. Kilimanjaro Ice Cap Continues Rapid Retreat.” New York Times. November 3, 2009. <http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/03/world/africa/03melt.html?_r=2&ref=science&pagewanted=print>

Mount Kilimanjaro is a famous mountain in Tanzania, Africa. Its ice cap has decreased 26% in nine years, since 2000. Last records show that 85% of the ice cap that was present in 1912 has vanished, or melted. Douglas R. Hardy proved that both sides of the mountain, horizontally are declining at the same rate. Some hypothesis for why this is happening are human activity on the mountain, r climatological influences. Lonnie Thompson extracted deep cylinders of ice from the glaciers and found that they were full of elongated bubbles. This proves that this ice had melted and refroze in recent years. But surface melting has not occurred in 11,700 years. An explanation for this is the decline in moisture level. Not only is this happening in Mt. Kilimanjaro but the similar signs are happening with ice in other places in Africa, South America, Indonesia, and the Himalayas. Nepal Katmandu’s cabinet is meeting on Mount Everest to announce the threat of global warming, which may be the explanation for the ice caps to be melting.

This topic really highlights the fact of global warming. People in the world today are really guilty of harming the environment. I felt like I should present this topic as current events because it seemed like the environment really comes second to humans. When we act we do not respect our environment and it effects us in a very negative way.

This article was nicely written, but needed more evidence. Bhanoo could have put more examples in this article and made it longer. I liked how it was very easy to understand. It was not easy to write about because it was cut down so much already.

  1. I think this article is very well presented in the factual area. I felt that I learnt a lot about the statistics and theory's behind this article review. This article review had an interesting topic because it informs it's audience about something that is very relevant and an ongoing issue in the world.
I do believe that this article had good content but it was quite boring and lost me in some areas. In the start of the review I was a little confused as to what the article was saying. It could have been more intriguing if there was a clear heading about the point of the article and more points regarding how this effects the knowledge of global warming. I didn't fully understand the article until the end when Bailey stated that this knowledge that was obtained through the findings in the ice was linked to global warming. This point should have been made the main focus and should have been mentioned throughout the review.
I was impressed by the use of statistics and evidence in this article, Bailey made this review very chemically relevant and showed how this is significant in the world wide issues that concern the world.
Overall this article was good and I found it very informing and very important facts that people should have knowledge about.
    Great job Bailey!

  2. This review taught me a lot about Mount Kilimanjaro and its ice caps melting. I think this review has a lot of really good specific facts that helped me understand the statistics. I also liked how Bailey’s review was clear and easy to read and understand.
One this I didn’t like about the review was that it wasn’t very captivating and didn’t really make me want to read more. Another thing that could have been done better is made it clear from the beginning what the article was about instead of not really make it clear till the end.
Overall this was a very good review, I learned a lot about how the ice caps are quickly decreasing and I thought Bailey had a very clear way of showing that.

  3. Baileys review informed me about Mount Kilimanjaro and how the ice caps are melting away recently. Bailey included a fair amount of facts and details which allowed me to understand her review much better. The statistics were also a good point of bailey's writing. She did a great job at keeping her review short, leaving the reader with a great understanding. If Bailey was seeking advice on how to improve her article I would say that she should use an attention grabber to make her topic more interesting for me. I got a little bored while reading so she could improve on that. At the beginning i was not very clear on what she was trying to get across but at the end she did make it noticeable. Therefore next time bailey should try and tell the reader what her point is at the beginning. I was very impressed on her review and it was very informing. Bailey did a fabulous job at teaching the reader how important this is.

  4. I thought one aspect of this review that was well presented was that it gave a very good summary of the article, which was nice because it refreshed my memory on the article. The review also was very factual, which was also nice because I could learn something and not even have to read the whole article, even though I had anyway. Another thing that was particularly well presented was that the review was short, so it was easy to read and not so time consuming. There are a couple of things that could have been improved on the review, though it was all together very good. One of the things is that there was that the word “or” was spelt wrong and it could have been spelt right. Another thing that could have been improved is that the font could have all been the same size an font, because it looked a bit random that it went from one font to another. One thing that I found interesting in the article is that the ice cap on Mount Kilimanjaro has decreased 26% since 2000, it’s a terrible thing but it is interesting.
