Exposure to Lead, Tobacco smoke raises risk of ADHD

This article addresses the risks in exposing prenatal (before birth) fetuses to lead or tobacco. This study states that the exposure to these chemicals will dramatically increase the chances of your child being diagnosed with ADHD. It was said that we thoroughly study the treatment for ADHD but we should be more focused on preventing it. It is important that we do our best to reduce exposures to environmental toxicants, which will lower rates of ADHD in children. The researchers found that children exposed prenatally to tobacco smoke were 2.4 times more likely to have ADHD. Those with blood lead levels in the top third had a 2.3 fold increased likelihood of ADHD. This article is very relevant to our society as it is something that is quite common and poses threats to many babies more that often. By knowing these crucial facts we can successfully lower ADHD rates and therefore lessen the poisoning of our children and those to come. This article was written very briefly and I feel that details were lacking and more research needed to be acquired to successfully argue the fact that these exposures increase the rate of ADHD. This article was very informative and factual, I learnt many important evidence in reducing ADHD rates.

  1. I thought this was very interesting. I would have never connected tobacco use with ADHD. Olivia chose a great article because I was very interested in the topic. I thought she could put more detail into it but otherwise this was very good. This is also very informative because if people knew this they would try harder not to smoke or second hand smoke when they are pregnant. Although ADHD does not sound like terrible diagnose wouldn't you rather live without it? Why put your son or daughter through that? This should be a more publicized article. GOOD JOB OLIVIA!

  2. Olivia's summary was very informative in the sense that she first brought up a topic that is not discussed often and then evaluated on that fact. I liked how she told us that lead along with smoke can harm a fetus and increases the chances for the child to be diagnosed with ADHD. This was definitely a good choice in article because she gave one statistic about what researches have proved. This informative summary was very well written but lacked details as Olivia mentioned about the original article. The article was definitely a good topic to pick for current events but maybe Olivia could have picked a different article discussing the same topic which would enable Olivia to explain to us readers a bit more about how smoke and lead will harm an unborn baby. I was impressed with how Olivia took a very short article and put it in words that others can understand and it left me with something to think about. Good summary Olivia!

  3. I thought Olivia did a fantastic job of summarizing this article. These two things are scarcely connected and I had never heard of such a thing. The best part was that she explained how this occurs. Otherwise it would have been a simple stated fact and i probably would not have believed it. The explanation of it allowed me to feel like it is the truth, not some bogus. I thought this was great because it really applies to our current world. Many kids suffer from ADHD and many people smoke. Therefore this article applies to many people. I also thought she did a great job of presenting the information in an understandable and engaging fashion. The one thing i thought that could have been improved is that when reading the article there were many more details than in Olivia's summary. I did love the simplicity of her article and applaud her for choosing something not as easy as others, but that connects with our modern world. Overall Olivia did a great job, it was really cool to learn about the connection between smoking and ADHD. Knowing this hopefully future parents will think twice about their smoking addiction and think of their kids first.

  4. I found this article to be pleasently surprising. The topic was so interesting so it got our attention fast. Olivia also got right to the point so that I didn't lose attention quickly. I also liked how Olivia gave statistics about the topic. I thought Olivia could have been a little more clear when it came to talking about the likelihood of children getting diagnosed with ADHD. I also thing that Olivia could have explained more on HOW tobacco and lead cause ADHD. I never knew that tobacco or lead could possibly cause ADHD so this article was extremely informative. Good job!

  5. Olivia, I thought your review on the article Exposure to Lead, Tobacco smoke raises risk of ADHD was very well written. I liked that it was short, because it made it easy to read. I also liked that it was entirely a review and not a ton of random facts about the article. You also did a very good job at explaining how the article was important in today’s society and said that ADHD is a very common thing, which it is half my friends have it. There were a couple of things that you could have done to improve the article, for instance you could have made the summary for the article a bit shorter and you could have used a more interesting font to make your review a bit more eye appealing. All in all I thought you review was a pleasure to read, and I found it very interesting to learn that environmental toxicants can lower chances of having ADHD.

  6. Olivia's summary of this article was very good. She made the facts very clear in her article. She was brief and got right to the point about how tobacco smoke gives a higher risk for babies having ADHD. Also, this article effects millions of people around the globe, who are all smokers. This article was well written because she gave a solid explanation about how smoking and tobacco use is dangerous for posterity. However, there was not much detail in this article review, which would have been helpful to understand the risks of the tobacco. Secondly, she did not make it clear what ADHD is, which would be very helpful to someone who didn't know what it was. Overall Olivia did a great job on her article review. It was really interesting to lean about how smoking and ADHD are connected.

  7. I thought that Olivia did a great job summarizing this article. She stayed true to the facts, and her sentences short, concise and to the point. I found this article to be very interesting, because the brain is such a mysterious thing, it is interesting to learn that tobacco smoke can effect it in such ways that ADHD can occur. I didn’t think there was much Olivia needed to work on, expect she could have made it a little more relatable to our lives (giving examples, etc.) She also could have made it a little less scientific. Overall nice job Olivia! :)
