Antibodies Resurface as Alternative to Removing Appendix

Kolata, Gina. "Antibiotics Resurface as Alternative to Removing Appendix."The New York Times.      The New York Times, 18 May 2015. Web. 20 May 2015.

The article I read, “Antibiotics Resurface as Alternative to Removing Appendix” by Gina Kolata is about how many Americans each year gets appendicitis (an inflammation of the appendix), and they think that the appendix must be removed using surgery right away. However, there has been a recent study that shows that many people who use antibodies did not need the surgery later on. Now many doctors, including Dr.Talan, are trying to do tests which compare which treatment is better for surgery: antibodies or surgery? The doctors claim that even though surgery takes much longer and the patients who took the antibodies felt better almost immediately, the people who took antibodies said they felt abdominal pains a few months later.

This article is significant to humanity because more than 300,000 Americans get appendicitis each year that they have to have removed using surgery. Antibodies will help with the patients and cost less than having to get surgery, although there are slight side effects and many people do not trust it. I think it is important to know what is going on concerning the treatment especially since it pertains to so many people. It is nice to know that doctors are working together to determine what the best treatment is, and that they are working on creating an antibody that doesn’t result in abdominal pain after a few short months. This was an interesting article and it was well written. There were a few quotes from the doctors and patients who used antibodies and the author explained everything clearly.

  1. Cindy wrote a good review on the article, “Antibiotics Resurface as Alternative to Removing Appendix”. I was surprised to learn there was another way to solve appendicitis besides surgery. Cindy did a great job summarizing her article. She briefly described the new research while making it easy for readers to understand. I also liked how Cindy compared appendices to the world. It was eye-opening to know how many people are actually affected by this. Cindy also included the scientist’s name was meant she had reliable sources. If I could add anything to this review it would be to add quotes. Quotes would help enhance the writing. Also I wish Cindy could’ve included how this antibiotic was created and how many people actually use it. Overall Cindy had a great review that was very interesting to learn about.
