Study Finds Climate Change
as Threat to 1 in 6 Species
In this article, “Study Finds Climate Change as Threat to 1
in 6 Species” the author, Carl Zimmer, points out the incredibly important
issue of climate change the world is facing at the moment. He started by describing the diversity in
results that different experiments had concluded on, some of them claiming that
climate change is occurring drastically quickly and that many species were
being wiped out, other studies showing little to no change at all. He pointed out a study conducted at
Connecticut University, which took into account many different variables. This experiment, conducted by Dr. Urban
concluded that the affects of global warming were indeed very extreme, and
predicted that it would eventually wipe out 1 in 6 species. Other scientist published after Urban’s
experiment was released that due to other factors the results of global warming
could very well lead to even more drastic results, and that often climate
change is impossible to predict.
This article is incredibly important because it
scientifically proves the damage that humans are doing to their planet. People often overlook the incredible impact
that they can have on their environment.
They often don’t take into account that they have the influence to also
inspire their friends and family to also help the environment. Often times I can get so caught up on the
little things in life that I don’t look at the bigger picture, which is the
entire planet which provides for the millions of species that live on it. Global warming will eventually hinder the
lives of humans and it needs to be stopped.
I thought that although this article was riveting, many of
the statistics it expressed were unclear.
Often times the author would provide information about change in
temperature movement of different species, and the decline in population
without giving a time frame for these events.
This made the article hard for me to understand, and fully grasp especially
because studies show that many changes occurring due to global warming are exponentially
occurring. Overall this article did
provide interesting insight into the experiments being conducted about global
warming and helped me become aware of the possible error that some studies on
climate change might.
Martha did an excellent job of reviewing the article “Study Finds Climate Change as a Threat to 1 in 6 Species” by Carl Zimmer. The article was long and included a large variation and number of statistics regarding the possible percentages of extinction, and Martha did a great job of condensing all of that information into a short paragraph for her report. The paragraph in which she connects the article to society included two aspects that strengthened her current event review. The first was that she connected Zimmer’s article to herself and her life as a teenager who doesn’t often worry about her fragile planets and the animals that inhabit it. The second is her call to action. Martha wrote that we should raise awareness for climate change, so that we can save the animals from extinction, which offers a message of hope. To improve this report, Martha could have included some of the statistics listed in the article or she could have explained why all of the climate change models have such drastic differences in their results. From reading this article and Martha’s diligent report, I learned about the different factors that impact the statistics regarding the extinction of animals and that climate change is already affecting the animals of Earth.
ReplyDeleteMartha’s review of “Study Finds Climate Change as Threat to 1 in 6 Species,” by Carl Zimmer, was very well written. Martha gave a general overview of the article, which gave me a good idea of the main purpose of the article. She then explained why this article is so important, and she did this very well, by explaining that many people don’t realize or think about the impact they have on the planet. I also like how Martha didn’t include unnecessary facts or ideas from the article, which made her review short and concise. One thing I think could have made Martha’s review even better is if she included more information on how they conducted the experiments to come to these conclusions. Another thing I thing Martha could have added is how the different experiments got very different outcomes. Martha’s review was very informative and it made me realize the importance of helping and treating the planet well.
