Even One Hour of TV Daily May Cause Kids to Gain Weight

Christensen, Jen. "Even One Hour of TV Daily May Cause Kids to Gain Weight." CNN. Cable News Network, n.d. Web. 16 May 2015.

The article I read called Hour of TV daily may lead to weight gain in kindergartners, study says by Jen Christensen was about the impact that watching TV has on young children. Dr. Mark DeBoer, an associate professor of pediatrics with the Division of Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes at the University of Virginia, conducted an observational study on about 11,000 children over the span of one year. The 11,000 children were enrolled in the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study in the 2011-2012 school year. A year later the researchers examined the data and interviewed many of the parents about the amount of time their child spent watching TV. After this they measured the child’s height and weight. He found that: on average kindergarteners watch 3.3 hours of television. Yet he also found that kids who watched as little as an hour a day, were 50% to 60% more likely to be overweight and 58% to 73% were more likely to be obese when comparing them to kids who watch less than one hour of television a day. Children who watched more than an hour a day are 39% more likely to be overweight and 86% more likely to be obese. These statistics are shocking, yet something that Dr. DeBoer found even more shocking was that he found no correlation between kids weight an computer time. Before DeBoer conducted this study, the American Academy of Pediatrics said that kids should watch less than 2 hours of TV a day and children under 2 should not watch TV at all, yet now DeBoer is saying that 2 hours might be too much. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that childhood obesity has more than doubled in the past 30 years! DeBoer did this study because children who are overweight or obese are more likely to have cardiovascular issues, more likely to have cancer, get bullied, and are more prone to prediabetes.
This article is very important because I know I as well as my friends and family watch a lot  of television. I never knew how badly just an hour of TV could affect your health. Many parents do not realize this as well, and if they were to read this article I believe many of them would stop letting their children watch as much TV. The impact that TV has had on children is exponentially rising. The fact that 73% of kids watching TV for more than one hour a day are more likely to become obese, than kids who watch less than one hour a day is scary. Society should start taking these statistics seriously and hold their children back from watching so much TV. This article should be read by all parents to inform them of the effect television is having on their child’s health. I know that I will start watching less TV after reading this article.
I think that this article was written well but had a couple things that could be fixed. One thing is that I found the article a little bit confusing because of the sequencing of the story. I wish that the writer, organized it a little bit better to make it easier for the reader. I also think that the author could have broken up the article with subtitles so the distinction between the study and statistics of obesity in general was more clear. The author did a great job explaining the experiment, and writing about it; this article was very relevant to society and interesting and I really enjoyed reading it.

Sophie's review of the article, "Even One Hour of TV Daily May Cause Kids to Gain Weight" by Jen Christensen, was very detailed and informative. Sophie started her response very strongly, including a lot of detail from the original article. With that information she was able to connect it to her own life and those of her friends, saying her opinion on how much TV we watch, which is a lot. In that same paragraph it was also a good idea to say how she will try to cut back on TV having read this article. Lastly, I thought it was an interesting idea to suggest that the original author add subtitles to the article. Though Sophie's response was very well-written and strong, she could make some changes to it. The first thing I would suggest is to try to make the first paragraph flow better to allow the reader to better understand the research. For example, in one sentence Sophie was using percentages to explain the findings, but by using four in one sentence it made it quite confusing. Another thing I would suggest is to add why Dr. DeBoer decided to conduct a study on television watching. It did say that he did the study to find out more about children who were becoming obese, but it did not say why he focused on television watching and what brought him to that. Learning about this topic is very eye opening and it surprised me a lot when it said that kindergarteners watch about 3.3 hours of TV a day. This really shows how much television has really affected young children. It was not like this when I was younger. I agree that this topic should really be brought to the attention of parents.

Sophie’s review of the article, “TV daily may lead to weight gain in kindergartners, study says” by Jen Christensen was alarming. Sophie included many statistics that she learned from reading this article. She described the experiment that was conducted very well. Sophie also included how she can use these findings to change her own life. I would suggest to include direct quotes from experts on the topic. It would also be helpful to know what now is considered the healthy amount of television that can be watched in a day for kids and teenagers drawn from the results of this experiment. It is upsetting that something as common as watching television can cause obesity and other health issues in the future.

  3. Sophie's review of the article, "TV Daily May Lead to Weight Gain in Kindergarteners" shocked me. I liked how Sophie was able to weave the statistics of the study into her summary effectively. I also think that she did a nice job explaining how TV impacts the health of children, not just that it does. I also enjoyed her critique and I thought she gave effective advice to the author. Despite her many shining, I thought that maybe she could touch upon the impact of children in other grades, like high and middle schoolers. I would have been interested to see if TV impacted my weight gain as much as it does a kindergartener, and that probably would have motivated me to make a change in the amount of TV I watch. This may be fault of the article, but I think the reasoning of why computer and television weight gain should have been explained. I think it would help the reader to further understand the objective of the study. I learned in this article that one of my favorite things to do could cause me serious health problems. This article should be taken as a wake-up call and should be treated as a warning to future parents about the dangers of television.

  4. Sophie’s current event review was very well written. I was so shocked that one hour of watching T.V could affect a child’s weight. Sophie organized her paragraph very well and was able to include many of the shocking factors of the article. Sophie’s suggestion about the author adding subtitles was very smart and her explanation of the importance of this article to our society was explained perfectly. If I could offer any advice it would be to add a direct quote or two from the article to enhance her writing. I also wish she could’ve included the statistiques for older people who are done or almost done developing so we could an idea of the differences between adults and children. Sophie’s article was something that everyone should read. People should really cut down on their use of the television, myself included.

I found Sophie’s review of “Even One Hour of TV Daily May Cause Kids to Gain Weight,” by Jen Christensen, very interesting and informative to read. I did not know that just one hour of TV could have such a big impact on a child’s weight. In Sophie’s review, one thing that I really liked was her use of data and statistics from the article. They gave me a better understanding of the percentages of children likely to be overweight or obese who watch a different number of hours of TV in a day. Another element of Sophie’s review that I really liked was her connection of the article to her own life, and her call to action. She mentions that she and her friends watch a lot of TV, and that she will try to cut back on the time she spends watching TV after reading her article. She also says that society needs to take these facts from the research seriously and that parents need to keep their children from watching so much TV. One last thing Sophie did well in her review was that she explained the purpose of the study very clearly- because children who are overweight or obese are more likely to have cancer, be bullied, have cardiovascular issues, or have prediabetes. Although Sophie wrote a great review, she could also improve some aspects of it. One thing she could do is include at least one quote, so the reader could know the opinions of experts on the subject. Also, Sophie could have written a bit more about the findings about computer time in relation to weight gain because she only had one sentence about it and did not explain why the find about it was so shocking. From Sophie’s article and review, I found it shocking to learn how a common activity that everyone takes part in, no matter how old they are, could lead to serious health problems. I agree with Sophie that everyone, including myself, needs to cut down on the amount of time that we spend watching TV.

Sophie did a great job with her current event review. She explained the experiment conducted without giving an unnecessary amount of detail, but providing enough information to understand it. The review was very clear, and easy to understand; Sophie clearly put a lot of thought into it when writing it. I liked her comments on how the author of the article could clarify the statistics in the article itself, I agree with her statements and think that this proves that Sophie is a great writer herself.
Sophie could have expressed some criticism on the article not acknowledging the other factors that cause obesity, such as genetics, diet, lack of exercise and others. I was skeptical that this study may not have fully acknowledged those factors. Sophie also should have included fewer statistics, this would have made some of the more shocking statistics stand out and would have made the review easier to grasp.
This is a pretty shocking article. These statistics are alarming to parents everywhere, TV is a source of entertainment to children all across the world and sadly plays a large role in American culture. Parents will have to choose between, quiet and entertained kids, or fat kids.

  9. I found Sophie’s review of the article Even One Hour of TV Daily May Cause Kids to Gain Weight by Jen Christensen to be very good and full of good information. i never realized how much one hour could do to someone. She incorporated data and statistics to prove the point even more. That gave me a better understanding of how many kinds this affects. I also liked how she brought in a call of action and her own example. She said she spends a lot of time watching TV and now she wants to cut back on that. She brought up how these health problems could lead to other problems in the future such as bullying. I think including one quote from an expert on the topic could improve the article greatly. Sophie could have also tried to include more data about computer time as well rather than just TV. I found it shocking that no matter how old you are, you could get some health problems some common activities. I agree that lots of kids, including me, have to cut down on their TV time .

For example, she used percentages from the article and said that if a kid watches about one hour of tv a day, they are 50%-60% more likely to become obese. Another aspect of Sophie’s review that I liked was her explanation of how this article relates to her daily life. She says she often watches a lot of TV, and now realises that it may not be the best thing. I also liked how Sophie summed up the article in a short, yet effective way. She was able to get the purpose of this article across to the reader without dragging on the topics that she was discussing. Although Sophie wrote a great review, there is room for improvement. One thing she could do is a quote from the reader, or from researches that are studying this topic. If she did this, the reader of the review would understand a professional’s point of view on what is currently going on. Although I liked how Sophie connected this article to herself, I think that she could have added more about how this will affect people in the future. Her review got me thinking about how much time I spend looking at screens, and I have come to the conclusion that I should cut back on screen time. Overall, I think that Sophie’s review is very well written and gets the reader thinking about their daily lives.

I found Sophie’s review of “Even One Hour of TV Daily May Cause Kids to Gain Weight,” by Jen Christensen, very interesting and informative to read. One thing I really liked in Sophie's articles was the way she used her data, an example of this being when she used percentages from the article to help prove her point. Another great aspect of her article was her explanation on how the article related to her, when doing this it allows the reader to connect to the author. Lastly, Sophie was able to make this a quick and fact filled reading experience when easily explaining her points without using excess wording. Although Sophie's review was a great piece, there is still room for improvement. One thing she could do, would be to get quotes on experts opinions, allowing the reader to learn more information overall. I think Sophie could have bettered her paper as a whole, by explaining the effect it will have on people in the future. This article was able to open up my eyes to the roles screens play in our lives everyday, and I have come to the conclusion that I should cut back on screen time. Overall I enjoyed reading Sophie's review, and I think she did a great job.
