The article “Scientists Sample the Ocean and Find Tiny Additions to the Tree of Life” by Karen Weintraub discusses the discovery of tiny microbes that affect the ocean significantly, but are being affected themselves by the increase in temperature due to global warming. These tiny creatures may be among the oldest on the Earth and together, they absorb carbon dioxide, make oxygen, break down waste, and nourish other creatures. These findings, in the words of Ms. Weintraub, “have added an order of magnitude to what we know of the Tree of Life, vastly expanding its base.” All this was discovered through the expedition of the schooner Tara. Tara helped bring to light just how serious the global warming situation is to these creatures. “Temperature is the most important environmental factor determining the composition of these communities,” said Chris Bowler, a genomics expert with the Department of Biology of the École Normale Supérieure and the National Center for Scientific Research in France.
This topic is very important for us to know because global warming has greatly affected our lives and the more we learn about how it is affecting other lives, the more we can do to prevent it. 70% of the world's oceans and seas, so it is crucial that we protect them and the creatures they hold. Its also interesting for us to learn about these microbes because they help our oceans survive. I am not very into marine biology, but I do care about global warming and the fact that it is harming these creatures that have been around for millions of years is horrifying to me.
This article was very well-written. I liked how the author separated the article into small paragraphs because it makes it easier to read. I also liked how the author explained the experiments that the scientists have been doing over the past couple of years and what they have learned from these experiments. She included a lot of quotes too, which gives me a look at what some professionals think of the situation. I think the author could have explained what exactly the microbes were, but overall, this article by Karen Weintraub was very informative and well-written.

  1. Rachel's review of the article "Scientists Sample the Ocean and Find Tiny Additions to the Tree of Life" was scary to me. I like the field of marine biology in general, so this article may have been one I would have chose, which I liked. I also liked that her opinion was valid and within her bounds, but stated something significant at the same time. I think that her outside opinion and expert knowledge was very valid and crucial to the success of her piece. Despite her many success, I thought that she could change some things too. I think that since she was not very interested in marine biology, this may not have been a great article for her to review. Enjoying what you are doing always brings a better outcome. I also think she could have provided a little more background on these creatures, such as where they were found and what they are called. These although are major things to fix, I think her article was overall successful. One of the many things I learned from it was the fact that global warming is having a much larger impact on every form of life on the earth. This fact upset me and made me realize that strides must be taken to protect our earth.

I really enjoyed reading Rachel’s review on the article “Scientists Sample The Ocean and Find Tiny Additions to the Tree of Life,” by Karen Weintraub. I thought Rachel did a great job with her review and it informed me of something I did not know about. One thing Rachel did very well that I liked was that she included many quotes from experts and the author of the article in her review. These quotes further informed me of how global warming is affecting this new species. Another thing Rachel did well in her review was she explained her opinion and call to action well. She says that it is horrible these creatures are being harmed by global warming and that we need to protect oceans and seas and the creatures they hold. I also liked how clearly Rachel described why these small creatures are important, because I otherwise wouldn’t have known why protecting them is important. Although Rachel’s review was very well- written, there were some things she could improve. One is that she could have given more background on these small creatures. I still am not sure what type of animal they are, what they look like, what they are named, or where in the world they live. Another thing Rachel could improve is to include more about how global warming affects the animal, because I know that it does but I do not know why. From Rachel’s review, I thought it was impressive and sad to learn that such a tiny animal could be affected so seriously by global warming. I liked reading Rachel’s article and I thought she did a good job writing it.

The current event review of “Scientists Sample the Ocean and Find Tiny Additions to the Tree of Life”, written by Rachel Billings was strongly written. In this review, Rachel was successful with many writing methods. First, Rachel did a great job with including quotes from the article. Also, she presented her connection to the global warming problem well. Finally, Rachel edited the article and explained what the author did well, she provided different points in the review. Although Rachel had a strong review article, there are some aspects she could work on. I think Rachel could have summarized the article a little better in the first paragraph. Also, she could add a little to how this issue affects her. In this article, I was able to learn the affects of global warming and how this hurts the ocean life. Overall, this article was very well written and informative.

Rachel did a great job reviewing "Scientists Sample Oceans and Find Tiny Additions to the Tree of Life". She carefully chose a great quote to her review which enhanced my understanding of the article, without being overwhelming. She did a good job connecting the issues that microbes are facing to the issues that species all over the planet also struggle with. I agree with her that the original article should have included more background information about microbes. Even through her review was great it could have been improved if she herself did some further research on microbes and touched on them somewhere in her review. Also she could have summarized how exactly global warming affects the animals, whats the scientific reasoning and/or evidence? This was an incredibly interesting article and review which reminded me of how the damage humans have been doing is affecting even the tiniest species. I hope humans take responsibility for their destruction and work to replenish the environment.

  6. Rachel did an excellent job in writing her current event review of the article “Scientists Sample the Ocean and Find Tiny Additions to the Tree of Life” by Karen Weintraub. Rachel did a great job of summarizing the dense article in order to emphasis the most important points. She included helpful quotes in her review and I loved how she referenced herself and her personal feelings about the subject of global warming in her connection paragraph. This current event report could have been improved if Rachel had included some of the numbers regarding the organisms and if she had detailed the uphill battle that scientists are fighting in order to save the oceans and the tiny, but crucial lives that depend on them. From reading this article and its review, I learned about the dramatic effect of water temperature on the creatures of the ocean.

Rachel’s response to the article, “Scientists Sample the Ocean and Find Tiny Additions to the Tree of Life” is very well written. The fact that she included quotes helped to back up the story and the facts that she gave. I really liked how she tied this subject into the ongoing issue of global warming. This provided and new perspective on the topic. I also liked how she presented her opinions and facts. Although her article was very well written and informative, I feel that she could have included more of a summary of the article at the beginning of her response to introduce the article better. It would also be very helpful if she included information of where this is going in the future. This article put global warming into perspective for me in a whole new way.

I found Rachel’s review of the article“Scientists Sample The Ocean and Find Tiny Additions to the Tree of Life,” by Karen Weintraub very well done. I thought Rachel did a great job with her review and it informed me of something I did not know about. I thought her use of quotes was very good. These helped her overall narrative. Another thing Rachel did well in her review was that she explained her opinion nicely. She says that it is horrible these creatures are being harmed by global warming and that we need to protect oceans and seas and the creatures they hold. I really didn’t understand how and why we should protect these creatures, until Rachel told me. Although Rachel’s piece was great, there were some things she could improve. She could have given some more information on the creatures. I wish she had used statistics in her analysis. This article is very relevant to our times here on planet Earth. I think Rachel did a very good job writing this.

I enjoyed reading Rachel’s review on the article “Scientists Sample The Ocean and Find Tiny Additions to the Tree of Life,” by Karen Weintraub. Rachel did a good job including quotes from experts and the author of the article. By including these quotes, she was able to get the idea of the article across more clearly to the reader. Another aspect of the review that I thought Rachel did well on was explaining the most important details from the article, so the reader could get a good understanding of what the author’s main point was. One last thing that I think Rachel did a very good job on was how she connected this problem with global warming which is going on right now. By doing this, it puts how important this topic is into perspection. Although Rachel’s review was very well- written, there is room for improvement. One is that she could have given more information on is how global warming affects the animal. From the review, I can tell that it does in fact affect the animal, but I am still not completely sure as to why. Another aspect that Rachel could improve on is including how this problem affects her daily life. She explained how it could and is affecting the world, and the animals, but it would have been interesting to know how she thinks it is affecting her as a person. Overall, Rachel’s review informed me about what is going on in the ocean, and global warming as a whole, and I found this topic very intriguing to read about.
